Weelll.. here's one of the players not talked about at all. Nils Lundkvist. I understand the controversy with him playing with the talent pool at D right now. It's ridiculous to have these problems. That's a luxury problem. I also think it's ridiculous a big talent like Jones can't get a chance right now. A luxury problem to have, still a notion this generation of hockey players are far as loyal to the cattle ranch that drafted them at the auction as previous generations were. Disrespect Jones enough and he might also start making demands. Modern problems of an entertainment cattle ranch, the cattle is running away left and right! They don't believe in my bullshit and my role of authority! Oh no! And the majority of all NHL entertainment franchises have old Murican dinosaurs as GMs. Holy hell the explosion in those meetings.
Anyhow, I think Lundkvist so far has earned a chance to continue the season as he is. He's struggled but he hasn't been awful. Last two games, he's kind of been solid. This is a 21 year old Swedish D-man, used to an international rink size, in a new country, a new culture, new teammates, new everything.
And then he's playing in the NHL with a smaller rink with much faster players and a much faster game. Deer in the headlights is kind of expected, don't you think? Even so, he has tried his very best to hold composure. He's played a very conservative game so far, just trying to survive the game. In my eyes, very expected. Which Euro D-man pup rookie ever started to play really well from the start? Well... basically none. Same with NA D-man pups.
I mean, when this kid gets set, adapts to the pace and starts playing his own game, he will be very interesting. You've seen basically nothing of Lundkvist's actual game repertoire yet. But of course he's very conservative when playing in survival mode in the first weeks as a rookie.
So, what's his repertoire of an addition to the NYR game? Well, this. Imagine him playing this game in a couple of years when he's a better skater, faster, stronger and more skilled?
In my opinion, when Lundkvist plays his game he tries to play the same way as Fox. Very fluent, moving. Both the US school of hockey and the Swedish school of hockey have merged into having the same idea how to create quality defensemen. I have so much more to say about the history about that in the past, but anyway...
Fox is cooler and better in many aspects, but Lundkvist has a better siege shot.
