I think ive seen enough from Lundkvist to know hes not ready and needs time in the AHL. Get Jones up here. He would immediately be our second best puck mover on D and clearly is more NHL ready after his cup of coffee last year and outplaying Nils in training camp/pre-season.

I like Lundkvist as a prospect, and once he gets stronger and more confident he will be a solid NHLer, but i have an increasingly hard time seeing his long term future in NY.

As much as I'd love to see Nils succeed at the NHL level I am trending in this direction as well.

In regards to Jones - If he came up and played the way he did in the preseason, man- he could really help this team exiting the zone and up top during o zone time

It all just reminds me so much of Erixon. Highly-regarded two-way Swedish defenseman who did really well in the SHL and was supposed to be ready to step right in. Then he does, and it's like, uh...

His Rangers career may end similarly, as well.
Rangers Prospect Twitter painted a very misleading picture of the kind of player Nils was/is supposed to be. They expectations were set too high and totally out of whack.

He is not and (as far as I can tell) never was the offensive defenseman this board wanted him to be and needs/needed time in Hartford to refine his defensive game.

PP2 with Jones last year and PP2 with Nils this year is night and day.

So painfully obvious that this kid needs more seasoning. You have to wonder if the recent failures with Euro first rounders is playing a role in their decision to keep him with the big club. Let’s hope they aren’t ruining him right now.

You couldn’t say that any better, right on target with this

His puck moving ability leaves a lot to be desired but his instructions on the bench to his teammates might be the single biggest contributing factor to our strong record.

Holy hell, bring out the chainsaws. This is you reacting from his what, first 12 games in the NHL? Ooh, such patience! If you guys were GMs the lineup would look like a slot machine. *BRRRRRR PIIING* 12 games as a rookie. Recently lambasted. The new whipping boy. Seeped into NY culture enough? Because of last game? Because his two good games before those don't count? Or just being partial, bitter Jones boys being extra bitter leashing frustration like this?

Living in a megalomanically big city, I understand. Your city is a country in many parts of this world. You're all living so tightly packed in that mess of oil, concrete, authority, conflict, demoralization and dehumanization. To me, that's crazy. I would define it as absolutely unsustainble. I couldn't feel comfortable in a city of 100.000, I moved out, it felt too cold and distant already at that level for me in terms of human connection. The emanating stress seeping in everywhere from the very pace of people walking faster on sidewalks, the growing dehumanization into numbers and people just being actors playing the game in escalating numbers. For our individual "success". Yeah, sure. At what cost for all of us? I just ask. The career.

No one knows anyone compared to my town where I recognize and know quite a few that I meet. I know you know your "hood", but you don't know your entire community. Pretty f***ing far from it. You get used to it growing up in it, but it will all change your cultural thinking. In all ways. I want a son that doesn't react, but reflects and thinks. Hence where I am.

I understand the urge to compete all the time in your extremely competitive culture. The impatience is just so also so extreme to me. I just don't understand the shortsighted mind in... everything in New York. Bottom up. Quarterly reports? Are you kidding? What a joke. Daddy needs to chill. Alot. But you can't, because then you won't make ends meet in your culture. I'm not accusing anyone, it's the common submission of what being shortsighted and duped is.

If I wanted a person with patience, my first choice wouldn't be a person from New York. What do I mean with all of this? I mean, the team is crushing it. Management knows what Lundkvist can do if he gets into the zone. He needs to learn to adapt to the pace. I would say easily more important than what Jones can do, because Lundkvist could pour in goals if he's used to the pace. I'm not saying Jones isn't deserving of a spot, because he definitely is. Hell yes he does. Lundkvist just has a hidden elite quality neither Fox nor Jones has. His shot is very, very dangerous.

Weird post? You're welcome. Cultural differences.

Was this post about Lundkvist? Far from all of it. It was more about what is important? The term achievement isn't objective.

Weelll.. here's one of the players not talked about at all. Nils Lundkvist. I understand the controversy with him playing with the talent pool at D right now. It's ridiculous to have these problems. That's a luxury problem. I also think it's ridiculous a big talent like Jones can't get a chance right now. A luxury problem to have, still a notion this generation of hockey players are far as loyal to the cattle ranch that drafted them at the auction as previous generations were. Disrespect Jones enough and he might also start making demands. Modern problems of an entertainment cattle ranch, the cattle is running away left and right! They don't believe in my bullshit and my role of authority! Oh no! And the majority of all NHL entertainment franchises have old Murican dinosaurs as GMs. Holy hell the explosion in those meetings.

Anyhow, I think Lundkvist so far has earned a chance to continue the season as he is. He's struggled but he hasn't been awful. Last two games, he's kind of been solid. This is a 21 year old Swedish D-man, used to an international rink size, in a new country, a new culture, new teammates, new everything.

And then he's playing in the NHL with a smaller rink with much faster players and a much faster game. Deer in the headlights is kind of expected, don't you think? Even so, he has tried his very best to hold composure. He's played a very conservative game so far, just trying to survive the game. In my eyes, very expected. Which Euro D-man pup rookie ever started to play really well from the start? Well... basically none. Same with NA D-man pups.

I mean, when this kid gets set, adapts to the pace and starts playing his own game, he will be very interesting. You've seen basically nothing of Lundkvist's actual game repertoire yet. But of course he's very conservative when playing in survival mode in the first weeks as a rookie.

So, what's his repertoire of an addition to the NYR game? Well, this. Imagine him playing this game in a couple of years when he's a better skater, faster, stronger and more skilled?

In my opinion, when Lundkvist plays his game he tries to play the same way as Fox. Very fluent, moving. Both the US school of hockey and the Swedish school of hockey have merged into having the same idea how to create quality defensemen. I have so much more to say about the history about that in the past, but anyway...

Fox is cooler and better in many aspects, but Lundkvist has a better siege shot.

Lundkvist is every bit the keeper that some say Schneider is.

If you want to keep Schneider, you don't move Lundkvist to do so.

You move Trouba. Or Lindgren even.

I think this has something to do with it condidering happened with Lias and Kravs. Like you said it's painfully obvious he is just not ready and playing in Hartford would help. I still think he will be a top 4 Dman in this league but I wouldn't hesitate to trade or package him for either a young 2c or RW. Jones should be really be playing for this team right now.

really makes ya wonder. In hindsight, Krav could have stayed up . . . or he would have found another reason to be upset.

Meanwhile, the European bias hype proved again to be more cheerleading than objectively recognizing this kid was farther off than the bias hype indicated.

I/we all like him but gee, he needs more time.

Rangers keeping Nils Lundkvist in NHL despite dwindling time

Nevertheless, Gallant and the front office hierarchy believe that New York and the NHL are where Lundkvist belongs as opposed to Hartford and the AHL, where the Swede would presumably get major minutes in all key situations.

“[Lundqvist’s progression] is steady; I mean there’s nothing real flashy out there,” said Gallant. “You talk about him [that] he’s going to be a talented power-play guy, but Foxy is out there for a good part of that power play so [Lundqvist] doesn’t get a whole lot of looks out there in that, but he moves the puck well, he’s got a lot of skill and a good hockey IQ.

“He’s never going to be a physical player and that’s not what we want. He’s a Foxy-type player, not at that level, obviously, but he just got over here. He’s doing everything we want. He’s young, it takes some time, but we’re happy as hell with him. He’s everything we thought he is.”

Gallant and Drury have a totally different impression of him than a majority of fans, or maybe its lip service for a decision they want to live with for the time being

Interesting to note that at the end of this article it states that Hajek is playing the left side with Zac Jones. So they have Jones on the right with the Pack and thats good if they do want to send down Nils for Jones, at least he's been getting major minutes on that side and it wont be a big shift for him if he comes up and they decide to keep Nemeth on his strong side

Lundkvist assuredly needs to get better but it's so early to be making these judgments. I'm not gonna simply dismiss that he was our best defensive prospect for the last two years and now pretend like he sucks and we have to move him before the league finds out.

Yeah he has definitely seen a lot of time on the right. IIRC he was previously playing with Bitetto.

I personally feel like Jones should get a shot particularly given what he did last year, but the organization is pretty clearly committed to making it work with Lundkvist. It's not costing us games at this point so I'm fine with it, he has certainly gotten a bit better since the early going. Still a long way to go before I'm not concerned whenever he's out there but there is some undeniable improvement IMO.

Still should be Jonesy but whatever.

Lol Nils "moves the puck well"? What the f*** is Gallant on? I get that its a bit of a fluff piece but come on man lol.
his passing has been drastically better the last few games. it's hard to stand out when you're the only one that can make a pass on that pair. several times Lundkvist has been put in a bad spot with the puck on his stick because Nemeth can't make a pass and just defers to him. Kind of like Girardi forcing passes to McDonagh a lot when he started to decline.

Miller has been our best defensive prospect since their draft year. People just soured on him because he wasn't tearing it up in the NHL.

But I agree that we shouldn't be tossing Nils out right now. I'd really like for him to be getting big minutes in Hartford, but I guess we aren't going to go down that path for some reason.

Did you watch the last game? He was turning over the puck almost every touch he had. He had 4 during a shift in the 2nd period! FOUR!

The one thing I've noticed since his hiatus is that hes attempted fewer and that hes usually the one reversing the puck over to Nemeth hoping that he can take care of it. Since when has being the only player on your pair who can make a pass led to you being smothered in your own end? I don't think Trouba's very good at it either, it hasn't kept K'Andre from being able to push play up ice. Playing with Staal, who is death to all things transition, didn't hurt DeAngelo's ability to facilitate a breakout either.

Girardi didn't overly defer to McDonagh either. He mindlessly threw everything up the ice with out any idea of where the puck was going. He would have fit in perfect with our group right now because they all love to do that. The Nils-Nemeth pairing is basically two guys who are doing that.
