IVe learned to stop trusting what other teams fans say of their departing players after the Jack Johnson debacle by some LA fans.

I'm not referring to what fans have said since the trade, I'm referring to what fans, bloggers, professional analysts, etc... have said all year. Nick Schultz has gone downhill. Maybe he turns it around, but as is he's not in our healthy top 6.

Well, he doesn't have to be.

That does help, the only problem he's almost as old as me!!! :sarcasm:

Last I checked you're old enough to be my grandfather, and he's younger than me. :)

As for the trade itself... meh. He was good, but he seems to have gone downhill. I'm hoping that that's due to being in the structureless, formless morass that is Edmonton's defensive play rather than any particular degeneration of ability. If he rebounds to what he used to be, then this could be a hell of a deal.

Funny thing - if this was Howson who'd made this deal, I'd be a LOT more confident, because he pulled off this sort of thing all the time. I don't have Jarmo's measure on this sort of thing, tho, and I'm also a bit disappointed by the Gaborik situation. Momentary bias FTW! :)

Nick Schultz.... Edmonton's Marian Gaborik?

Maybe he wasn't a fit in Edmonton due to their lack of structure and free wheeling style. Hence, down hill. I'd like to see him play and then determine if the deal was a poor one.

Okay who is pretending to be HF posters in Porty's chats?

This from the most recent one:

Comment From IHeartZherdev
Hey Porty. Did the Jackets try to do more to shore up the blue line at the trade deadline? We look completely lost in our own zone. Tyutin is the single best defenseman to ever don the Union Blue, and Jarmo thought Nick Schultz would be enough?!

They were much nicer when impersonating me; all they did was exaggerate my confidence in ex-Predators players like, oh, Devan Dubnyk. :)

Alas, however, this time they spelled my name right. Presumably it is someone here who's responsible, as I commented on that previously here.

does it really matter?
The guy is solid. Nothing more nothing less.

Yep - I think this pickup is going to be a nice little addition coming down the stretch. He is not very noticeable and even put up an assist in last nights game. A little more ice time too with closer to 12 min. Getting back into a system he better understands too.

I was keeping a pretty close eye on him last night, and thought he did a really good job. There was a couple times where he covered for his partner's mistakes. I was mostly surprised at how solid he was at the breakout pass. On the tape every time and he was pretty quick and making the decision on where to go. Nice pickup for the stretch drive.

So far, so good. What I did notice last night is that he made some quick decisions with some crisp passing. Defensive zone seems ok.

Hopefully he gets more and more comfortable and the trust level goes up.

From a hockey perspective he must have liked the move.

I'm anxious to see what his game looks like after another couple games. Considering the schedule is so compressed, there is little practice time so any learning he's doing is on the fly. He's been solid so far but also played the fewest minutes. He skates pretty well and as others said makes a decent first pass.

I have to believe he was not cut out for the Edmonton "system" (whatever that is, if there is one). Hopefully we'll see continued improvement down the stretch and he can add some minutes to take pressure off some of the others.

Who sits when Tyutin comes back?

that will be the fun question...has to be one of Prout/Schultz/Savard...my guess is Prout

I think Schultz was brought in as a stopgap until Tyuts is ready and will sit when he returns. He's looked decent, but I think the young guys, Prout and Savard, bring more to the ice and have gained TR's confidence. Personally, I'd not want to see either sit to make room for Schultz.

I think you will have a hard time sitting Schultz if he plays well. He's older and more experienced probably doesn't panic. Don't forget he's also played for TR for 2 years while with the Wild only a couple of years ago.

...how in the hell did I forget that? Dayum. Normally I'm on top of that kind of thing...

That said, Richards' time in Minnesota didn't exactly end on a positive note w/r/t his relationship with the players, so I dunno if that's a good thing or a bad thing when it comes to Schultz. I'd hope it's a good thing, though - I imagine Jarmo would have asked Richards about Schultz under said circumstances. It'd be the smart and easy way to get a good scouting report.

easy conversation - Do you still want to support the Oilers revamp or go down the playoff stretch - We've got a coach Richards that you already know. You seemed to maybe flourish under him getting a decent contract out of it ... And would a handshake suffice to put things in the past if you come here. You've both done some growing.

Welcome aboard
lol

Can we get back to the real discussion. I can't believe Jarmo picked this guy up. What a horrible move. Terrible deadline day since we got a guy who can't even help the Oilers!

....yeah, you know who you are out there. :)

Perhaps it would be better to say that what other teams' fans say about their departing players cannot always be taken as gospel. Everybody has their whipping boys.

Fair enough. If people actually break it down with specifics, then yeah I can trust it a little more. But if they say "haha, he sucks" or "He couldn't crack it on Edmonton's 3rd pair, lolol". Yeah, no thanks.

all the same...its been like 3 games...he's been decent...and lets face it... a -11 on EDM is like a +3 on a regular team...needs more time to gel...
