Speculation: Nick Kypreos - "I expect Minten or Cowan to be gone pretty much this time next week"

I would want to use Cowan to get a core level piece or a guy who could quickly become that

Kind of like reported Knies + 1st + for Hagel and MAF deal in 2022

Those 2 are near core level players in their primes. I have seen you post before that our contention window is really the next 3 or so years until Matthews is a UFA

We maximize this window by adding a star winger into our top 6. Unlike Rantanen its one with a bunch of term too

My bad I misread the conversation. Minten has a much lower ceiling than Cowan. But he is 100% one of those players you do not get the full picture of by stats.

I believe honestly his floor is a Lars Eller type. He's big, soft enough hands, very high IQ, commited to the greasy parts of the game. His ceiling IMO is a Cirelli type 3rd line C. No reasonable Leaf fan should be selling him as a top line C or anything like that. If he became a 2C would be incredible.

But he is going to be a very valuable piece to a team, which is why A) Leaf fans have been reluctant to move him B) We recognize if we want something good we need to give teams a piece of the future.

I was sadly a fan the last time the Leafs traded 2 future 1st round picks. Never again. Especially for not those kind of wingers. If you were to do that it has to be a real superstar.

Well I would top 3 and top 5 protect them both and dont expect these picks to be better than late teens at worst case scenerio for us.

To me Forsberg is a true superstar and Konency is a borderline superstar

Im not opposed to aiming higher tier if there is potentially better winger or center on the market.

For example Id easily offer that for Wyatt Johnston from Dallas but its not happening as WJ will be signed LT and is an elite young player on a heavy contender

Konecny, Forsberg are very good players on poor teams who may consider making moves to accelerate their rebuilds

Guys like WJ, Kaprizov, Bratt may be more attractive players but the cost is much higher due to them all being on heavy contending teams hence not on the market.

I like Minten, but I wouldn't call him a high end prospect.

I'd be more inclined to move Reichel + Dallas 2nd.

Or acquire Minten in a larger Donato trade.

Forsberg is 30, most players start to regress after 30. I'd rather have Konecny for the reason he has less miles, and less playoff miles.

I don't necessarily think that Kypreos's statement implies that Cowan and Minten have equal value. I think he's saying that he thinks the lease will make a major move that will require parting with one of their two primary prospects. Yes, they have different values and which one goes could depend upon what's coming back and and what else is going out.

Well I'll admit that true living did not make a lot of big deadline deals in Calgary, what he does this year in Toronto may depend more upon what Shanahan, Pelley, and the board have given him as marching orders.

That's a fair statement and I agree with you on both counts - Kipper as well as Toronto's FO rather than just Treliving.

I don’t think that’s true. A bubble team looking for a long term solution at 3C may value the polished game and near NHL ready Minten over the boom bust potential of Cowan.

That may be the case but if it's a bubble team they won't be trading away important pieces which can help in the playoffs or for a playoff run.
