Speculation: Nick Kypreos - "I expect Minten or Cowan to be gone pretty much this time next week"

Flyers need to be all over Cowan. They already have his London teammate Barkey. Thats 2/3 of a good middle 6 NHL line possibly as early as next season.
You guys probably dont have interest in 2026 1st + 2027 1st + Cowan + Kampf + Jarnkrok for Koencny type package right?

I would want to use Cowan to get a core level piece or a guy who could quickly become that

Kind of like reported Knies + 1st + for Hagel and MAF deal in 2022

I don’t see a fit at all. I wouldn’t trade him for Laughton and have no interest in Risto whatsoever.
And you certainly aren’t trading Sandheim or Konecny for him and a first.
The guys you’d want to give up wouldn’t get it done and the guys I’d want aren’t available and would require way more that just Cowan.

I think this would be a big mistake if they move either or both of these guys (or any 1sts) for a rental to bring in for the playoffs.

The Leafs will need these ELC’s and productive players to slot into the lineup in the future, minten and Cowan and future picks should be these players.

I love the Leafs, but management has brought in help every year just for the core to not perform when it matters.

Make this core do it themselves and prove they actually can. If they get to a conference final or a cup final, then empty the cupboards for them next season.

It’s a bad idea to sell off these futures just to go out in the first or second round, again.

This team hasn’t proven that loading up at the deadline will even help them.

Stand pat, maybe move a 3rd or a 4th if a deal makes sense. Or make an actual player trade to improve the lineup for someone with term.

Dumping all your futures year after year on a team that has no killer instinct and folds under the bright lights and playoff style games is just a terrible idea.

Those two wouldn’t pair well at the NHL level - - that line would be hopelessly undersized.

Pains me to say but yes Konecny should be traded but you need to improve on Kampf and Jarnkrok. 2026 1st, Cowan and two more pieces could do it.

Leafs rejected Minten for Laughton straight up so just goes to show you how high they think of him as a prospect

Really like Cowan i think he has some good value
Elliotte said yesterday at this moment everybody knows what the 4 big pieces are that teams are after. It’s Minten, Cowan, Danford and the “26 first round pick. It’s now up to Treliving to decide IF he wants to trade one of them and then pick who that one is going to be. For me personally it’s Danford. Leafs are garbage at developing D-men, Cowan is only 19 and could potentially crack a top 6 role has by far the most skill. Minten is the best overall prospect out of the 3. He already has NHL games under his belt and looked pretty good while scoring his first NHL goal.

Knowing Kypreos' history as an "insider" I expect neither of these guys to be dealt.

They need to just see if this core can get it done. If they don’t I’d let Marner and JT walk and retool with a new look.
JT I think is gonna sign for like 5 million a year to end his career in Toronto, I don't think there's a chance they let him walk. They've overpaid him for 7 years can't walk away from the discount now lol

Kyper isn't credible but I don't think Fraser Minten is safe
ironically, i'd play Minten at 3C over Domi and almost any 3C that they have been rumored to be interested in. He is as good/better defensively then any of them, and has offensive upside, though could use the seasoning in the minors, but, he has a great head for the game and will not be lost positionally at least.

Minten is 6'2'' near 200 lbs, he's above average in size for the NHL already, Barkey is teeny, listed at 5'11'' (the way Marner is 6' i.e. NOT)

I think Minten is the best of this bunch of Leaf options and I would, without question, rather have Minten then either of Laughton or Gourde.

If they move Minten for either of those guys, I think it's a brain-dead move.

Leafs are one of the Cup favourites. It’s wide open this year. Might be their best chance. They should move this young guys if it gets them what they need. Brock Nelson or Braden Schenn would be a good start.

I agree with you. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

I get moving Cowan for help, but I wouldn't be trading Minten, at least not for the seriously underwhelming options out there.

If I were the Leafs, I wouldn't be taking Gourde or Laughton period. I don't think they move the needle at all.

No. The Flyers fan was calling for Philly to acquire Easton Cowan - - NOT Minten - - to pair him with Denver Barkey. This is net Cowan and Barkey are line mates in London.

As of this morning*, I'm firmly of the belief that both Cowan and Minten are still with the Leafs organization after Friday.

Treliving has already hinted that he's not likely to make a big splash, his recent history (esp. last year) indicate he still lives by the theory that teams are built in the Summer, with Matthews clearly not anywhere near where he needs to be, with the Atlantic division still a toss up and two very strong teams likely in the way of advancing, with this team's already thin prospect pool and having dealt away so many previous picks on failed runs ... Nope, this is not the year to make the move.

And if that means they flop again and Mitch walks, so be it. The gamble is that unless Treliving is very confident in this group, losing Mitch alone vs. losing Mitch + a couple of decent prospects + a high-round pick or two is the less painful outcome.

* This is not subject to change btw.
