Elias Pettersson: Double down or sell?

I've been a die-hard Canucks fan for 30+ years (god help me...) and I firmly want the team to sell this guy. Even for pennies. The team will be better off without him, along with a whole lot more cap space.

kid can play hockey, slumps happen
13 months isn't a slump.
And, this isn't the first time in his career he's fallen off a cliff for a substantial period of time. This just happens to be the longest.

Yes, the guy CAN play hockey. But should a team hitch their wagon to him in order to win? That's a very different question.

I have his jersey on my wall.

Sell.

If he's rebounding, it's not going to be here. He has needed a fresh start for years now. The long feud with Miller, injuries and whatever else has worn him down to a shell of his former self. I think this is just who he is now - a great two way centre who will get you 60 points a season.

That isn't worth anywhere near 11.6 million per year and they made a big mistake paying for past performance. A lot of it was just bad timing because of how quickly his performance fell off a cliff. You can't have this player chronically underachieving with a full NMC. Someone else will buy low and get them out of the contract.

It will be extremely bittersweet to lose him, because he was the franchise at one time. But he lost the fire at some point in early 2024 and never got it back.
The past performance was Oct/Nov/Dec months before he signed. He was tearing it up Oct-Dec and media/fans were clutching purses to re-sign him. We gave him a time buffer to suck while he got his headspace around his new contract but he never re-emerged.

It’s all very confusing. Drop off happened last January before all star selection when 57 ran into him.

Not saying that’s what it was.

Now he has a new learning curve- tougher assignments against teams (when Toc puts him out there) and producing.

Hope his presence on the team is positive and finds his way again.
