I mean I'm not going to blame Dubas for him getting hurt.

But a 1st for Foligno instead of a 2nd for Hall was always a bad move. Doesn't mean we can't still win the Cup but I've never understood it.

How do you figure? He's a guy who can play anywhere in the lineup, adds toughness, leadership and solid two way hockey

Playoffs

Foligno 2gms, 1pts ES (.50esppg), 0pts PP, main PK guy, +played Center
Hall 5gms, 2pts ES (.40esppg), 1pts PP, no PK

It looks that way watching on tv. But, as anyone who's ever played team sports knows, this guy probably gives off that rock-solid I've-got-your-back, nothing-to-fear aura and energy that his younger team mates absorb and thrive on. It's a real thing and it matters.

Don't start with me zeke, we both know advanced stats over a longer time frame are a better measure of a player and Hall simply has more of an impact. Though I do regret bringing it up at this point

Do you think he actually directed the puck or was it just a hard pass that he couldn't handle and it bounced the right way?
Honestly, I thought it was a fluke that bounced the right way. You too I guess?

Even the advanced stats agree that Foligno is far better defensively.

I watched it a couple of times and couldn't make up my mind. I have to admit I was leaning towards fluke, but figured I'd give the old HOF'er the benefit of the doubt.

We had to retain salary. Hall would have cost us a 1st too
Buffalo still retained 50% on Hall for Boston. It would have just cost the Leafs a 4th to have some other team retain a further 50% like with Foligno. Even giving up a 1st for Hall would have been much smarter, but it would have been a 2nd

What is the potential of this traded 1st round pick? Is it a strong draft year coming up?
What is the long term damage to the Leafs for trading the pick?

Hall went for so cheap because he picked where got to play. Did Hall even want to play in Toronto? It sounded like he wanted Boston and Buffalo was dumb enough to give him a NTC on a one year deal.

I would assume Hall wouldn't have signed any 1 year deal without a NTC.

Probably not, but comparing the Hall signing doesn't make sense. Hall's price was so cheap because Buffalo could only really trade to him to Boston and both sides knew it.

If Hall is available for a cheaper asking price then you acquire Hall, that simple. In a vacuum I like Foligno in the team, but he was never worth the steep price paid. Factor in the injuries this season.

Didn’t like the cost at the time and even worse now. Not a good trade by Dubas.

Foligno cost more due to the backflips needed to be done for the double retention that got his cap hit under $1.4M for the Leafs

They were NEVER going to be able to get Hall's $4M cap hit (after 50% retention) on the roster even if Buffalo would have taken a 5th.

a few things here.

1. if we were facing elimination i fully believe he would be playing, we have given ourselves alot of breathing room for something like this. no point bringing him back a bit banged up with how this series is atm.

2. we dont need more points/scoring on this team. we need players that know how to win and are able to show our young stars how. i believe hes been great in the room and i bet hes talked to them about how columbus beat them last year as well. if we go a few rounds deep, the trade has already paid off imo.

just look at what he did playing center when JT went down..not easy to do.

I heard Hall forced a trade to Boston. If that is true, it could be the reason why he was cheaper than a first. At the end of the day Dubas got his man and no sense in worrying about not getting Taylor Hall instead.

HFLeafsforum... Second guessing every trade, ever. Complaining about 1.8 goals per game, GM/coaching decision, lineup decision, obtain Ovechkin, every defensive play second guessed, and bashed to bits....and this is while we are winning a playoff series, 3-1....

There are some very "special" people in this group.

But hey... Go Leafs!!!
