NHL.TV / Center Ice / ESPN+ Discussion - Part IV [See the warning in OP]

I still complain about the horrible image quality from all feeds except Bally Sports and ESPN. TNT, SportsNet, etc. all were blurry. Sportsnet even looked sub 720p and all these feeds seem to be 30fps interpolerated to 60fps which added a lot of motion blur.

And this is in the year 2023 when we should be discussing 4k and 120fps on streaming services. Yet the NHL isn't able to put 720p with 60fps on. Pathetic especially since it worked flawlessly the last years.
I watch the Sportsnet games in 4K, but not streaming. Still use cable because of the issues you say, and all the other issues, like drops the feed altogether….

Until I find something better , I've reluctantly added the belltv app during the season and cancel during the offseason.

I'd love to pay an all in 1 price (without blackouts) but...here I am.

Espnplayer sent me a mail talking about the end of their service in August.
Looks like from Italy there will be another service next year.
Hopefully.

Has anyone used a Roku TV 4K stick to stream NHL games on ESPN+ app? If so, any review of the experience? Is it 60fps or is the frame rate/quality lower?

Apologies if this question has been asked before.

Off topic if a MOD wouldn't mind answering, are count down threads not allowed this year? I swore I saw one earlier in the summer but can't find it anywhere (despite lots of results for the past several years on google). I made one last night and it is gone this morning.

I thought maybe the OP blocked me so I couldn't see the thread but I don't think that's how that works?

Any chance NHL will have a service where you can buy a service and use it in both the States and Canada ? Like we used to have with NHL TV.
Wat a joke of a league.

I have.

My older Samsung 'smart' HDTVs are 1080p and really do benefit from the Roku set up that I purchased at my local Costco...

While I'm not a fan of the ESPN Plus format for airing games (I honestly miss the home, or away broadcast intermission report - sometimes they are shown - sometimes not) the picture quality is alright for the most part.

Looks like ESPN+ Rates are going up again according to the earnings call. The NHL going back to ESPN and not using their own app for the out of market package is turning into a joke I knew it was going to be when they signed this partnership. People wanted the theme song back and it cost you an arm and a leg, plus some really shitty broadcasts to get it. I hope you're happy. The NHL is showing just how cheap they are and how bad this partnership has been. I miss NBC every day (where they could have put NHL Network on Peacock and I would have paid for it because I already pay for it because of MLB Sunday Lead Off and some WWE events).

TNT ran circles around ESPN for their playoff coverage and they had what used to be the NBC Announcers.

Email just came out. Again, NHL/ESPN/Sportsnet cant figure out they are in a service industry & have a product I can use in both the States (for when travelling) & Canada (where I live). Ergo they again get .00 from me Again.

Any idea when NHL will begin using more than 2Mbps bitrate in 480p?

Any chance of 4K in the next decade (or even >10Mbps bitrate)? Viaplay (stream) and Allente (satellite) in Sweden has the same terrible quality feeds at least. Same as the NHL app (vpn).

VPN when in the states with a CDN server.

It blows my mind that none of the North American sports are broadcast regularly in 4k.

Our shitty little country in Australia has a sport that only half the country (less than 10mil pop audience) plays and we still get all 8 games a week in 4k for the last 4 years.
Sportsnet in Canada has 1 or 2 games a day in 4K, as well as baseball,
TSN has some football games and others, just not as many.

Yeah,I thought of that. But when I go down south & staying at some buddies place, its nice to be able to just watch it on an app on apple TV/Roku/Firestick...etc. And well I understand you can VPN even thouose things, its work. As opposed to just logging onto my NHL TV app on my buddies Apple TV as I used to be able to do.
Ridiculous how they dont have a single app that one can use all over north america.

I'm so fed up with the blackouts. Why can't I just pay one company one price for every game?
The rights to the game are held by the local team/sports network. Until there's some revenue agreement, I don't see some local networks being ok with the blackout restriction removal. I'm not sure how much money they would need to make it happen, but we'd also be paying a lot more.

MSG is putting out / or maybe already put out, a streaming service that runs $300+ for a year for full access. (Doesn't include NJD, NYI, or NYR games). I can't see a money hungry network like that agreeing to allow games on ESPN + if you're in the local market.

Life, um, finds a way!

Is this stream, cable, or satellite?

What is the approximate bitrate? Or is it just the same terrible quality feeds as low bitrate "4K"? Is it blurry when the camera is moving type of feed? (Premier League streams are the prime example. Grass become green mush.)

Just curious that there never seems to be 4K source feeds even transmitted as "real" 720p streams to e.g. Sweden/Europe. 😔

I’m watching on cable, through the provided 4K box, no idea on bitrate, picture is excellent, noticeably better than if I switch and watch the same game on HD channel. Zero blur at any point of games.
I’m also watching on a high end 4K, not a cheap 4K tv.

Ok, that gives me some hope at least, thanks!

So, probably just providers in Sweden doing terrible bad business decisions buying the crappy feeds - that are easily replaced by less, um, official means at similar quality for less than 10% of the legal cost. Idiots.

Get the stbemu app on your smart tv or on a firestick and get an eye pee tee vee subscription and avoid all the need for Adblock or vpn/blackout issues
