NHL.TV / Center Ice / ESPN+ Discussion - Part IV [See the warning in OP]

An absolutely atrocious experience so far. Unusable product.

I have always said that outside of war and disease, there is nothing worse on this planet than alleged software "upgrades" and "updates".

They had a working NHL.tv product in previous seasons, and now they have destroyed it.

The one positive: shockingly, the subscription price was lower this season than in previous seasons (for us in Europe), because this time, it states the price directly in euros, and no 20% VAT tax was added on top of the price.

That's of little comfort, though, if the product itself is unusable.

I have submitted a complaint via the feedback form; copied below. In the complaint, I forgot to mention that it is, indeed, impossible to start the stream from the beginning if the game is already in progress. That's a huge issue as well, of course.

*****

The replay stream from last nights game Vegas @ LA is totally dysfunctional, missing large portions of the game. I verified this both in the iPad app and in the desktop stream.

The stream itself is only 1 hour 59 minutes long, which makes it obvious it misses big chunks of the game.

The first collapse comes at about the 47:48 minute mark in the stream. With about 3 minutes left in the 1st period, the stream stops, and then it continues with about 3 minutes left in the 2nd period, so about an entire period of play is not available in the stream. (Including missing the Vegas equalizing goal.)

The same thing happens with about 3 minutes left in the game, with the score 3-3. The stream collapses, and then it continued with about 20 seconds left in the game, with Vegas suddenly in the lead 4-3. So, the game-winning goal is missing in the stream as well.

Very troublesome is also that the intermission, pregame and postgame shows are all missing, even though they were available in the NHL.tv app in previous seasons. Please restore them for every game. You can cut away the commercials, but please definitely give us the intermission shows at the very least.

Absurdly, all commercial breaks are retained in full length in the replay stream, displaying a frozen image for even 15+ minutes straight in between periods.

Even this is worse compared to previous seasons, because in previous seasons, the "Commercial Break" screen was dynamic, so that you at least knew that the stream was still live and not frozen.

Now that the "Commercial Break" screen is completely frozen, you can never be sure whether the stream is still live. And, as described above, it definitely wasn't alive for large portions of last night's game.

Also, you regularly cut away the announcers mid-sentence when going to commercial breaks. This never used to happen in previous seasons.

In contrast, you absurdly kept the announcers' small-talk and prep-talk and rehearsals in the replay stream.

Overall, an atrocious experience, and if it doesn't improve, I will ask for a refund.

Thank you for fixing all the issues described above.

You were much more eloquent then me.
I just gave them the Denis Lemieux. “Fix this right f’n now.”

sn app crashed when the anthem was being sung but the sound remained

when I reloaded the anthem was being sung live as well as sung 40 seconds behind. It was quite the serenade

While it is now possible to watch the whole game on a PC and not just 48 or so minutes like a few hours ago, the timeline is totally wrong. When clicking on a goal in period 3 not he timeline, the stream jumps to a random moment in period one. What a mess.

Bought a new Samsung tv only to find that the NHL app is not available from their store, f***ing useless.

I still have the NHL app on my phone but you cannot cast the condensed games to the TV.

What the actual f*** is the point of this app now for us in Canada.

Also, they've added ads to the original NHL.app

Makes it look really cheap.

This is worse than the 'bunny ears' era of TV.

I heard , if you stand on 1 foot, spin around 3 times, while balancing a puck on your head...you'll be able to watch the last 10mins of the game in 240p for a low low price of $249.99

I think this is the last dying breath of the big TV providers. Here's hoping they lose alot this year, and people cause a ruckus.

Can anyone confirm if you are able to rewind or restart live games from the beginning on the ESPN website?

Im on ESPN Australia and its just live only with no sort of rewind at all.

Sportsnet app was glitchy for sure but it did improve as the evening went along . I don’t expect the service to be perfect as it’s kind of an imperfect medium to begin with but I do expect it to work well 95 % of the time . Tonight will be the real test as I’ll be watching the Bruins . 😁

This is just horrific. Was trying to watch the Ranger vs Lightning game on my PC and it showed 2:40:04 in total length. Was watching the first period and was able to skip through the commercial breaks in 10 second steps. But after the first period the whole thing just crashed. The timeline was gone and it took me directly to the game highlights. I was unable to skip back, the game was just gone. The same happened on different browsers, so this is definitely not a browser thing. That basically means I cannot watch the games on a PC or laptop.

In short: Whenever I skip anywhere beyond period one on the timeline, the whole game crashes and it takes me to the game highlights. This thing is just one huge bug. Sorry NHL, this is just terrible.
Same happened to me last night after the game ended. The better work out these issues quickly. This morning I can't play either of the games from last night at all. The SJS-Nsh games from last week still work properly.

And where's the live chat they used to have to be able to speak to an agent DURING a game if you are experiencing issues? Now the only option for a complaint is through email, so they don't fix things quickly enough.

As it stands now, there is zero point of paying for this service.

Holy crap, what did they do to create this mess?

I can't watch goal reviews anymore - even with two apps ... NHL + NHL.tv.

Basically, all I want to do is checking in on the score every morning (watching games live from Europe as a young dad is really hard), check if there were any of my favorite players scoring, see the video of it and maybe watch a condensed game video once in a while.

Is that so hard?

I payed for game center and I pay for the new subscription. All I get is shitty videos with tons of ads (always repeating the same ***cking NHL.store ad).

How can those guys still have a job? Is it so hard to provide decent video material?

So as a Canadian with a Roku TV and no cable am I just not able to watch hockey this year? What kind of shit is this,.

It's pretty brutal that they don't have a Roku app. I had to hook up my PS4 again to use the Sportsnet app. Best options would be to use a laptop and hook up through HDMI or use a phone or tablet and cast to your Roku.

kings vs vegas was flawless for the hour or so that I tuned in .

Using my iPad mini I’ve tried AirPlay with Roku , it works well but only if you are watching live . Using Chromecast is the better option . I use Google Chromecast with tv and casting from my iPad mini to the tv actually works better than using the tv Sportsnet app on Google Chromecast .

NHL dropped the ball here. Should have committed serious resources or stuck with BAMTECH. A top tier sports league should have an excellent streaming app in this day and age without a question.

We go from watching 4k on Netflix, Disney, etc. to this. Hurts my eyes.
MLBAM still runs the NHL’s website I believe. And Disney Streaming (which BAMTech became) still runs the steaming side for the league.

Has anyone tried watching on NHL TV after the games are finished? I'm not going to be watching live so that doesn't bother me much, but if there's problems with the game replays then it's basically worthless.

Whoops, missed the replay bit.

I'm signed in and checking the old game replays. The Sharks/Predators games say "This content is not available to you based on your current location" which as far as I know shouldn't apply so.... hmm. It'd be nice if this just... worked, but here we are.

The 2 games from yesterday didn't work at all for me this morning. The 2 games from last week both worked.

I looked the other day, and tonight's Bruins/Caps game appeared in my guide for Bell Sat TV. I set it to tape, and now it's no where to be found. Is anyone on Bell able to watch this game? I'm assuming it's on Sportsnet ....Thanks

Cannot find this game at all on Bell either, and I have Centre Ice on auto renewal.
