The Washington Capitals made their second round of training camp cuts on Monday afternoon, as Jakub Vrana, Riley Barber, Liam O’Brien, Madison Bowey, Christian Djoos, Darren Dietz, Garrett Mitchell and Vitek Vanecek will now report to Hershey Bears training camp.

Wild cuts

The team assigned forwards Kurtis Gabriel , Zack Mitchell and defenseman Gustav Olofsson to the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League (AHL). Minnesota also placed forwards Pat Cannone and Jordan Schroeder on waivers today. They will be assigned to Iowa on Tuesday if they clear waivers. Minnesota also announced defenseman Victor Bartley will be out indefinitely with a torn triceps muscle that will require surgery.

The Calgary Flames announced today that they have assigned seven players to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Stockton Heat: Ryan Culkin (D), Matt Frattin (RW), Jon Gillies (G), Mark Jankowski (C), Morgan Klimchuk (LW), Oliver Kylington (D), and Emile Poirier (RW). The Flames also announced that they have released defencemen Mikhail Grigorev and Colby Robak from their training camp.

Calgary has 32 players remaining at training camp (3x goalies, 11x defencemen, 18x forwards).

The Kings trimmed their roster by 15 players on Monday, assigning forwards Michael Amadio, Justin Auger, Patrick Bjorkstrand and Joel Lowry, and defensemen Erik Cernak, Alex Lintuniemi and Damir Sharipzianov to the Ontario Reign, and assigning players under AHL contracts, including forwards Sean Backman, Paul Bissonnette, Justin Gutierrez, T.J. Hensick, Sam Herr and Brett Sutter, goaltender Jack Flinn, and tryout Lucas Lessio to the Reign’s training camp. Ontario’s training camp begins Tuesday morning, while Los Angeles concludes its preseason schedule with games against Dallas and Colorado in Las Vegas next weekend.

The roster moves leave 40 players on the active roster, though goaltenders Peter Budaj and Jack Campbell, forward Andrew Crescenzi and defenseman Vincent LoVerde will be added to Ontario’s roster tomorrow should they clear waivers.

There’s no great deal of surprise here, though Lessio, from what I’ve inferred – I actually haven’t seen him in person because of the split-squads – had a strong showing and would have an opportunity to earn an AHL contract.

Penguins made some cuts yesterday which haven't been posted here yet:

The Pittsburgh Penguins have assigned 17 players to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

Players assigned to WBS include: goaltenders Casey DeSmith and Leland Irving; defensemen Tim Erixon, Ethan Prow, Stuart Percy, Cameron Gaunce, Reid McNeill, Steve Oleksy and Chad Ruhwedel; and forwards Oskar Sundqvist, Adam Krause, Ryan Haggerty, Sahir Gill, Josh Archibald, Dominik Simon, Garrett Wilson and Jean-Sebastien Dea.

Erixon, Percy, Gaunce, McNeill, Oleksy, Ruhwedel and Wilson all have to clear waivers on Tuesday at noon before they can join WBS.

Sabres recall 5, send one back to juniors

BUFFALO, N.Y. (October 4, 2016) — The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has recalled forwards Justin Bailey, Daniel Catenacci, Jean Dupuy and Cole Schneider, and defenseman Brady Austin from the Rochester Americans (AHL).

The team has also returned Giorgio Estephan to the Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL).

The Sabres now have 37 players (21 forwards, 13 defensemen and three goaltenders) on their training camp roster.

Nothing, nada, zilch. Seems like it's now a young man's game unless you're a superstar. One would think he could fill a role on some teams but perhaps not. If he doesn't play this year, that's probably it for his career even with new jobs opening next year in Las Vegas.

Ranger cuts!

Wolf Pack general manager Jim Schoenfeld today announced the addition to the Wolf Pack roster of eight players assigned by the parent New York Rangers.

Forwards Chris Brown, Steven Fogarty, Ryan Gropp, Philip McRae and Adam Tambellini, and defensemen Calle Andersson, Tommy Hughes and Michael Paliotta, have arrived from Ranger training camp.
