Post-Game Talk: NHL Trade Deadline - Canucks trade Diaz for a 5th, Kesler remains a Canuck

The value of the return simply wasn't there to help the team long-term.

Would it have been smart or stupid in your opinion to have traded Kesler knowing that?

According to who? The fact is that no one really knows what Gillis was offered, or if the rumours of ownership intervening have any credibility.

Ah yes, Gillis has been here 6 years but David Nonis is to blame for the lack of draft picks on our roster. :shakehead

Well, MG is to blame for not having any players coming out of the 09/10 draft.
It's too early to expect anything from the 11-13 draft.

Fact is, we got only Hodgson(now Kassian), Grabner and Raymond between 05-08 and that is on Nonis.

Some people deal with tense situations with humour. It's not uncommon.

.

I have no problem with humor, but it does not reflect well when jokes are being made publicly by players about your gm failing to trade you.

Just my opinion, and im not a huge gillis fan either.

Knowing that? It would have been stupid....However, I don't know that....I know thats been said by Gillis, but none of us know the actual deals on the table, do we?

Based on what players that did get moved (and the returns they got). eg., Vanek. Kesler's "short list" was a further hinderance (granted, it was Gillis who gave him that NTC)

I'd rather overhaul the front office at this point :(

Scum!? What'd he do?

came out and just tweeted this with an umbrella emoji
RT @Ryan_Kesler: "Told you so" - @strombone1 ☔

also listen to his radio interview http://www.teamradio.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Kesler-nice-to-get-past-deadline.mp3

hes continually lying about his trade request "Im happy Ima Canuck" **** off you can't play that strombone1 **** here and try to mock the GM/organization when you're still here. He hasn't handled this anywhere close to like Luongo did.

Dont like kesler cracking jokes on twitter about not getting moved...Not helping the situation.

Like others said some people use humor in difficult situations (especially if he really wants out). If that sort of thing really bothers you I can't see you getting along with the Scottish very well

Also it's a HELL of a lot better then "My contract sucks". Especially since it wasn't broadcast on national tv.

I love how the hockey hivemind gravitated to the idea that Kesler wants out. They were willing to believe Louis Jean's sources, but not willing to believe Kesler's own words on multiple occasions. It's not a coincidence no deal was made.

I don't know, I think you are making a pretty big leap basing the market for Kessler off the value of other (lesser) players.

Some reports indicate the Canucks were talking with up to six teams earlier in the week about Kesler, that certainly doesn't indicate a weak market.

Part of that is mitigated by two free agent prospects that look to be part of the long-term solution/key members of the club (and *current NHLers*) - Lack & Tanev. And it seems you're already writing-off the 2013 picks.

Kevin Connauton also is playing for the Dallas Stars right now.

I was talking about players in the Canucks' lineup. Connaughton and Hodgson turned into Derek Roy and Kassian.

No. He tried playing elsewhere, played horribly, then ran home to Europe. Then re-signed with the Coyotes afterwards cause that's the only place he could play. Vrbata is not coming here.

Like at least wiki the player you're expecting us to acquire.

Im well aware of his history.

Wish we knew exactly what was offered and by who but sadly that will never happen. I am positive they revisit a Kesler trade at or near the draft. Maybe if Kesler truly wants out bad enough he'll understand that you can't demand a trade then start limiting where you go. The Canucks aren't going to give him away.

It does if only 2 of those potential 6 teams are on Kesler's list.

Gillis can talk to 29 teams about Kesler, pull mammoth offers, but if Kesler only wants to go to PIT, it doesn't matter.

Having seen this play before, that sort of thing comes in act II

Once again the odds of this blowing up in Gillis face is stupidly high

Well to be fair if Nonis is going to get all of the credit for the team making game 7 of the SCF then he has to take some of the blame now. :)

I tend to look at all of the things a GM has done. Gillis has done some really good things and has made some mistakes as well. But that's pretty much the same you can say for most GM's.

Is it a coincidence that every single GM that we have is hated by most of the fanbase by the time they leave? Burke and Nonis for all of their faults landed jobs elsewhere so it's not like they were not highly regarded. Maybe some fans have unreasonable expectations? Although given our lack of success over the years I understand the frustration.

Truth is probably somewhere in between. It's not hard to think that he is pissed being in a losing environment. At the same time, if things improve next season, I am sure he has no problem staying on. If he truly had a problem with staying here, he wouldn't have said "glad to be here, love to be a canuck" to make sure the bridge is not burnt.

We know they wanted 20-25 young roster player, top prospect + 1st. That sounds reasonable to me for Kesler. The best offer we have heard was Sutter + Despres + 1st. Given this information, I think it's pretty easy to lean towards them not getting enough rather than them being too greedy or whatever else.

Fair enough, though Kassian *is* still in the Canucks' lineup and look to be part of the long-term future of the club. You're just arguing semantics by saying it's not the same thing - it is, at least from my perspective.

Well i did not like either. I just dont think it looks good for the canucks. I get that its his personality, i just dont think its a good message to joke about in public. Doesnt really bother me either, its just my opinion on what i think should not be joked about publicly, obviously he felt different and thats his choice.

Im a very easy going guy myself.

Would've been pissed if we took that offer. Sutter at best will be a lower end 2nd line C. Despres at best will be a top4 D (big whoop) and the only bright spot is the 1st round pick which will probably be a late pick.
