I'm sorry...let's pretend Hodgson is still in the lineup then.

I'll give you Schroeder and Hodgson. That's 2 out of almost 40 Mike Gillis picks in 6 years.

Part of that is mitigated by two free agent prospects that look to be part of the long-term solution/key members of the club (and *current NHLers*) - Lack & Tanev. And it seems you're already writing-off the 2013 picks.

Kevin Connauton also is playing for the Dallas Stars right now.

I don't know, when Douglas Murray gets a return equivalent to an elite forward in Thomas Vanek, I think it's safe to say there has been a shift in asset value around the league. These 2nd tier players like Moulson/Hemsky etc. were garnering 1st rd pick plus returns a couple years ago.

I don't think that's really true. We saw 1st round picks being thrown around at the deadline coming out of the 2005 lockout, but that had largely disappeard within a few years. In the 2009-2012 drafts there were only three 1st rounders moved for rentals (Gaustad, Kaberle, and Kovalchuk). Only Iginla brought back an unconditional 1st rounder last year. When's the last time a winger on a sub 40 point pace like Hemsky is on returned a 1st round pick?

I still think Kesler will garner a decent return. But beyond him, there might not be an opportunity to extract value out of the other veterans that could help expediate a re-tool.

Really hope today was an anomaly. If not, it's very discouraging for a team in Vancouver's position. We won't know until the draft at the earliest.

I think this is mostly true, but I don't think we needed today's deadline to see it. The only guys who are going to return prime assets are high end players like Kesler or Edler and even then the returns might be disappointing to a lot of people who are expecting franchise altering trades. Guys like Hansen or Higgins aren't going to return much at all of consequence.

I think Gillis is close to the end here, when you have players taking shots at the higher ups there's an issue. The other issue is our owner if he's stepping in like this.

It's too bad there aren't other ways to get prospects...oh wait Tanev and Lack represent another way.

You can't judge the last 3 drafts yet anyways.

First draft Hodgson was his pick and likely the rest simply the scouting staff given he was brought in a month or so before the draft.

2009 not so good but SChroeder. 2010 nothing in the first 3 rounds.

since then when he has concentrated on getting prospects it's the aforementioned Tanev and Lack along with Gaunce, Horvat, Shinkaruk, Corrado, Cassels, Fox, and yes even still Jensen who is all of 20years old.

The gap is really in the last couple of Nonis drafts. That's why they've had no youth pushing to be a part of the core the first few years with Gillis at the helm. It wasn't until his acquisitions developed that we have that push (Tanev, Lack, Kassian).

Paraphrasing Kesler her .. "Luu told me don't expect much whether you want to be traded or not"

Direct shot to the management. Shows how much the players think of the staff off the ice

It was a joke when Lu posted it, and it was a continuation of a running joke when Kesler ran with it in response.

Sometimes a humourous jab isn't a shot to the head.

Dont like kesler cracking jokes on twitter about not getting moved...Not helping the situation.

Some people deal with tense situations with humour. It's not uncommon.

Now that's funny, all the while being supportive, too. I like that.

Yup, and that's why I think the "hockey deal" will become more prevalent for Gillis. Teams have their own Higgins/Hansens, that if put in another situation, would flourish. I mentioned Eller earlier as a possible acquisition...

Kesler and Edler should be able to get this team enough future pieces to re-tool while the Sedin base is still here. The trick will be making good hockey deals to iron out the support positions IMO.

How awesome is it that Glen Sather is the only GM willing to pay high prices today, and Ryan Kesler is the 1st player in NHL history that doesn't want to play on Broadway? What a perfect storm of **** this organization always finds themselves in. The 1 coach on the planet Ryan Kesler will refuse to play for.

It's getting to be too much.

Do you have a credible source for that claim? Or are rumours, speculation and falsehoods being thrown around as facts again??

Ah yes, Gillis has been here 6 years but David Nonis is to blame for the lack of draft picks on our roster. :shakehead

Unreal. This team is a *****ing circus. It would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic.

At this point I'd rather just see this team tank the rest of the season and force management into significantly overhauling the core of this team.

Make my day.
Judging by this TD, every seller lacks those skills. Vanek + conditional 5th for conditional 2nd and Collberg?

What a weird turnaround in league-wide player values.

Very. By comparison St Louis got robbed blind on the Miller deal, looks terrible now. Burke abused someone in a trae (business as usual), 2nd for yogi bear nice.

Mike Gillis needs to be let go in the off season..He made the entire organization look bad with the Luongo trade saga..Now we have another player who wants out in Kesler that's going to cause more distraction for the team..Not to mention I don't think players look at his as a players gm anymore with the way hes handled these incidents after seeing Keslers recent tweet..I'm not surprised if ownership doesn't trust him anymore and maybe put a block to a potential trade..Even though I think the players we picked up in those trades could pay off in the future losing both goalies in a year is just horrible management

I'd rather overhaul the front office at this point :(

This isn't going to end well. Kesler is scum. Can't wait until he's traded.

Scum!? What'd he do?

It's hard to say if Gillis was smart or stupid not to take advantage of this time to trade Kesler (and others), but I've pretty much lost faith in him and whatever vision he's clinging to this week.

The value of the return simply wasn't there to help the team long-term.

Would it have been smart or stupid in your opinion to have traded Kesler knowing that?
