Kotkaniemi is the one I’d target in a Kuznetsov trade. I think he’s about to put it all together and when he does I think he’s bound to hit Barkov territory.

Heck why not make it Kotkaniemi + Weber for Kuznetsov + Schultz. And then go hard after Suter to pair them back together. Or Suter - Carlson, Orlov - Weber.

Weber is likely to miss all of next season.

Last I saw Tarasenko had a 6 team list he was willing to go to. Not knowing if any of them are interested its easy to see that he has no trade value because he holds and the leverage. Injuries, demand for a trade, short option list. The word on his shoulder is that the first two surgeries left something damaged unfixed. The 3rd surgery fixed that and the first two surgeries is why he wants out. So maybe its fixed.

You can guess that they have no leverage to get anything for him in trade and that Seattle is their ticket to not having to retain salary in order to move him.

You believe "The word is"?? That is completely unsourced. I believe that 4 of the 6 teams took the phone call. I dont equate interest in talking about it as an active deal that St Louis could take if they wanted it. Clearly they are willing to lose him for nothing to Seattle, so any deal that St Louis could take wasn't a better deal than that.

Why do you think he didnt get traded and is exposed?

alternative note: Tarasenko at his full cap hit and a 1st round draft pick for a 6th round pick is a trade offer at the full cap hit and something you would expect too expensive for St Louis to do

Saying a team would take Tarasenko’s full cap hit doesn’t mean there wasn’t a notable contract going back the other way. My guess is the return is so low, or the cost of moving him so high, they’re trying their luck with Seattle first - like putting a guy on waivers.

Seattle are said to see cap space as their big leverage this year, and several commentators and reporters have speculated they might not take players with large cap hits if they’re not being compensated for it. Absolutely no guarantee Tarasenko gets taken. But is a guy like Vince Dunn really a better punt than Tarasenko, even despite the injuries?

For us, I can fully see Seattle taking a guy like Vanecek, TVR or Dowd, even if guys like Dillon are available. I think we’re going to be losing a couple of picks/prospects in the draft in a bid to clear cap space on the backend.

Speculation from Friedman and others is that this might - might - be it for Weber for good. He’s effectively been playing injure for the last 18 months or so, and the damage is thought to be bad. Apparently the league has yet to approve a permanent move to LTIR, and if he retires it would impose a massive cap hit on Nashville for his back-ended contract structure. Very interesting one to watch for both Nashville and Montreal.

Given they’ve lost Weber for at least a year and are expected to lose Danault to free agency, I do wonder if a Kuzy+Orlov or Kuzy+Schultz type deal could be struck for Kotkaniemi. Not ideal for either team, but it would give Montreal an experienced top-6 center to go alongside Suzuki, and help on D, while we’d gain a younger C who could offset some of the Kuzy loss while playing a middle-6 C role alongside Eller? Just an ill-thought-through idea.

I believe I read at the time that he was offered a few multiyear deals (but more in the ballpark of 2-3 years and nothing like this one) but chose to bet on himself and come back on another one year deal to try and really cash in. Whoops.
