Looks like the Caps are trying to trade a defenseman that was 25th in the league in points per game on defense or a guy that makes about half was Ghost made. He was taking healthy scratches. Wasn't he?

Pretty sure he was, he was also waived recently.

Ghost was a healthy scratch a lot last year. So while it does measure the costs in some ways, Schultz and Dillon are not Ghost

Gostisbehere has 2 years left on his contract while Schultz has 1.

That said Gostisbehere is a far better player than Schultz so I could imagine that being the price if no one actually wants Schultz. It'd probably just be better to buyout Schultz if the asking price is something like a second round pick.

Ghost is far better than Schultz? Uhhhh

Maybe @Hivemind can shed some light since you seem to follow Philly sports more but I don’t get their treatment of Ghost the last few years. Seems pretty dumb and a steep price to pay to get rid of a useful player.

Or maybe our resident WFT and Flyers fan (what a dumb thing to be :naughty:) @Beef Invictus can give his thoughts.

Edit: just saw the post above and I don’t get it at all but I guess that’s why I’m not in the game.

Basically imagine Flyers coaches/management viewing Ghost how half of Caps fans viewed Mike Green. That's the shortest way to describe it. He definitely didn't get along with Hakstol, which is why I imagine that Seattle wasn't willing to take him for the package that Philly paid Arizona. The fact that he had that elite offensive/65 pt season and wasn't able to match it afterwards also soured some opinions of him.

I imagine his league-wide value took hits once he landed in Philly's doghouse, and it kinda created a feedback loop where Philly's usage of him (or lack thereof) tanked his value ("why would I pay for a guy you're healthy scratching?"). His contract actually isn't that bad (it was signed the year before his 65Pt breakout even if it kicked in after that breakout season), but it's still more than teams want to pay for a healthy scratch.

He would never have been a fit in Washington, mostly because he's a left shot D who earns half of his pay on the powerplay.

I've made my feelings pretty clear on Schultz. They need to get him off the team if at all possible, he actively hurts the team.

Gostisbehere is a fine player. He's not very good defensively but he's pretty good offensively (both in playdriving and playmaking) and on the power play. He's likely a fine second pairing player somewhere.

I have no idea how the league perceives Schultz compared to Ghost. But I wouldn't be shocked if they see him as similar or worse, and might command similar compensation as a cap dump.

I made a post about him in the analytics thread: All Purpose Analytics and Extended Stats Discussion

The contract was an albatross from the get-go. And not the good albatross like in golf.

I'm a stubborn SOB, rather just hold on to him along with Kempny and move them at the TDL as teams will be more willing then as they know they're both on expiring contracts and you'll actually get some picks in return.

A 2nd and a 7th is what I expected (feared) to give up to move Schultz in a possible trade.

With Schultz only having 1 year remaining (compared to Ghost's 2 years) and as a RD (Ghost is a LD right?), maybe it won't cost as much.

Except they won't be able to field a cap compliant roster unless they move some players before the start of the season.

This. We have no choice. Several players that make need to go just to ice a team.

We are in cap hell, and this might not be popular with some, but it’s BMacs fault. Handing out 2nd round picks to undo the mistakes you have made a terrible plan.

Reminder that Schultz can be bought out with the following cap hits:

The 22-23 figure stings a bit but next year's cap hit for a buyout is a very reasonable $667k. That gives them $3.33M for a replacement player next year and $2.33M for a replacement player the following year. The Capitals currently have 3 RD under contract for the next two years so essentially this would give them plenty of room to not only have a 7th D on the roster but also leave them extra cap space to make the rest of the roster compliant.

There is no reason Schultz should be on the team next year. If he can't be traded with minimal damage then buy him out.

Stevie Y just saying what the rest of us were thinking.

A trip to the Carolina Panthers board(what the....) shows that Canes fans dont seem bothered by that deal at all. They also seem to support Hamilton less than what Carlson has been getting around here.

BTW...with the Carlson hate on the rise any chance we see a return of the whoop whoop?

Its his fault the cap went flat the last two years?

The Panthers thing was from the expansion draft.

Are you reading a different Carolina board? They’re ripping into the trade for basically 16 straight pages.
