He’s also f***ing terrible. Like one of the worst D in the entire NHL.

Kinda hard to take last year's Buffalo team into consideration. Everyone was f***ing terrible last season. And I mean everyone down from the team to Jeanneret to the pretzel boy. But I thought Risto was pretty decent in years prior.

Ristolainen’s numbers have been in the toilet for his entire career and it’s reasonable to conclude that Buffalo is bad because Ristolainen has been their #1D and not vice versa.

I must be crazy for thinking Risto will look significantly better on an Excel spreadsheet when he's not being relied on as the go-to defenseman on a historically awful team like he has been for his entire career.

I've always been impressed with the eye-test but what do I know

It's also reasonable to conclude that Buffalo has been a god awful team throughout the entire lineup.

A young defenseman being asked to do way too much on a terrible team is a recipe for disaster. There's no defenseman that would put up good metrics in the situation that Risto has been in.

It's just what Buffalo does to young defenders - case in point Dahlin.

He’s been incredibly bad even taking into account context.

Maybe, but some of their players like Jake McCabe have acquitted themselves just fine. IMO it’s much more likely that Buffalo’s bad players are causing the team to be bad, rather than t’other way.

I just hope this series of moves by Metro teams to make themselves worse doesn’t convince BMac to be conservative this offseason. The Capitals still need massive improvements.

So in the last 24 hours Fletcher has traded Ghost, Hagg, 2021 1st, 2022 2nd, 2022 7th, and 2023 2nd for…

Rasmus Ristoleinan

Bold strategy, Cotton!

To make things even better, Risto hits free agency next summer at the same time Giroux, Couts, and Farabee all need new contracts. If everybody’s wrong and he actually turns out to be good once he’s out of Buffalo, he’ll play his way right off the team, or force deep cuts elsewhere to re-sign him. The only way this trade works out for the Flyers is if he’s so good he carries them to a cup this season.
