League News: NHL Talk - (News n' Scores n' Stuff) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

Holy crap?! Odds he makes it all 8 years….?
In NY? Who knows.

In terms of 'making it' measured by productivity, there are warning signs*, but 39 year old Quick and 37 year old Talbot are among the league leaders in GSAA. For context, this deal takes Shesty from 29 to 37. Bob is having a down 24-25, but he has been strong on the playoffs for the Panthers at age 34 and then 35.

*[why I say warning signs] Shesterkin GSAA
21-22: 44.9 (led NHL by wide margin with Sorokin second at 29.8)
22-23: 20.6 (8th)
23-24: 14.2 (9th)
24-25: 4.8 (prorated of course; currently 14th)

Sure, 8th, 9th, and 14th are all good years, but that's not what you're paying 11.5 million for. Having said that, Shesterkin has been incredible in the playoffs with a career .928 save percentage. You can deal with some regular season blues if your goalie is playing like that when it matters most.

Michkov is at 23 points (10G + 13A) in 25 games at age 19.

There's a reason Washington tried their damnedest to trade up for him. He's going to be a star. I have a feeling several teams are going to regret passing up on him.

I mean, we can’t know what teams passed for reasons outside of ability. If you’re a team you know a player won’t sign with you aren’t going to take him. I don’t know which teams those were, there were some meh picks ahead of him. Maybe the Caps could have traded up with Arizona to get him or something, but Leonard seems like he should be a real player.

I'm very happy with Leonard but yeah it definitely stings we were one pick away from Michkov. Imagine what he'd be doing on our third line instead of racking up meaningless points in Philly..

I wouldn't be so sure they were trying to trade up for Michkov ... from all reports it seemed like he (and his agent) pretty explicitly told us (and ARI and SJS) he didn't want to come over.

Didn't BMac also say something about thinking Leonard could be gone at 3 or 4?

For sure. There's a good chance he wouldn't have been interested in Arizona for instance. But if he was ok with Montreal then they have to be regretting their selection of Reinbacher.

Yeah, didn't Nikolishin have major issues with him before the draft? I think that relationship was damaged, so not sure what would've happened if say, Philly took Leonard instead. I hope we would've drafted him and figured out a way to patch things up, as he is an offensive stud. Hockey instincts and IQ are off the charts.

Yea I believe so.

Also re: Michkov -- was there ever any clarification on Philly paying CSKA his release clause? Seems to me like it would be a pretty clear violation of sanctions for Comcast to basically give the Russian Govt a million bucks ...

I doubt Arizona were so insanely high on Simashev they wouldn't trade down to 8. Maybe the Caps reps didn't even talk to them?

I also don't believe Michkov told the Caps of all teams he wouldn't come over to play for them, potentially giving up massive money for an unspecified reasons, while being excited to play for... Philadelphia? It's strange.

Just seems there wasn't a match there. Well know one day.

It's always a bit shady, as technically a KHL player must buy his contract out himself. Michkov's situation is even more confusing, as SKA retained their KHL rights over Mich, which would be perplexing after a contract buyout.
Oh yeah michkov is gonna be a good one.
Already is, all with relatively poor skating and not the hardest shot. A 120+ point player in the making if I ever saw one.

Whatever, we have Leonard who looks very promising himself.

2 more goals today against Boston. A lot of teams will regret passing on him, and he’s gonna annoy the Caps for a long time.

Will Smith seems like a nice player - but, damn, imagine Celebrini and Michkov.

I watched him today closely…he’s soft as F. Waits for his team to defend him. Arguably a diver..love the skill, the rest I dislike.

He’s probably an all star level talent eventually….but doesn’t leave me longing…not at his size.

I’m a Marchand guy. Total asshat to play against but a great player. He’s pacing for 30+30 this season even with Boston’s offensive and power play struggles and he’s a gamer in the playoffs.

Pests and goons are part of the game, so I rarely tune completely out on anyone. Only 2 in the modern era I can think of off the top of my head. Avery because he was as predatory with teammates as he was with the opposition. And Marchand almost entirely because he licked people.

I'm not even sure that licking people, as an exercise, is even a bad thing. I think we've all, if we're lucky, had some good times licking people and being licked by people.

And I don't think that licking hockey players is likely to be all that different. I've never licked a hockey player though, so I can't say for sure.

But licking hockey players while they're playing hockey, in front of a packed crowd and a broadcast audience? That crosses a line for me. Not sure what I'd call that line. The Objectionable People-Licking Line? Hockey Eliminates Licking People? H.E.L.P.?

(NOTE: Please read that previous paragraph carefully. It's "But licking hockey players," not "Butt-licking hockey players." That's a whole different thing. Please consult a physician.)

Missing Michkov hurts. But thank god we didn’t pass on him like some silly teams did. I’d be furious.

So what if you don’t get immediate control of your prospect? Did Bedard, Fantilli or Carlsson immediately turn around their franchises? What is the hurry?

Well Michkov actually dropped so I quibble on the characterization.

I am perfectly comfortable with Leonard over Michkov. Let’s see what it looks like 5 years from now. 10 years from now. I would bet Leonard has a better career. Like I’d take OV over Crosby although you can argue for both. I like that physical style of play. Fits the caps perfectly.

I wanted Michkov. I like the Russian factor here in DC (players please … not the politics), and was hoping for that to be part of it all.

But it didn’t happen, and we got Leonard. Who *should* be a heckuva player. I hope.

I mean, this entire board would be doing backflips if Leonard was here this season, doing what Michkov is doing. Right?

Let’s all be candid….Please??

That said, just because Michkov is great, doesn’t mean Leonard won’t be. AND, we couldn’t draft the diminutive Russian anyway.

7 vs 8 and all.

I'm just glad the Caps didn't pass on Michkov. If he's the next Kucherov then hats off to the Flyers for nabbing him, despite their team history and philosophy.

And anyway I'm excited for Lenny, who looks like a much better prospect than most #8 picks.

For a minute it looked like the Caps may have made mistake passing on Benson, but he cooled off and has been inconsequential this year.
