I don't think it's that terrible a price when you consider he's the best rental center available. They didn't give up Hoglander. Calgary could perhaps flip Kuzmenko, though I'm not sure he carries loads of value for playoff teams.

IMO it's not a tremendously deep draft either so if I'm one of the powerhouses I'm definitely even more open to moving a first rounder this year.

I think it depends what you think of Lindholm. I don't think he's actually any better than Adam Henrique, for instance (though I think Henrique has also shifted to the wing for some time this year).

Kuzmenko was in the doghouse but I feel like they could have done better than having him as a throw-in, for instance. I also think Brzustewicz profiles as a likely NHL regular and not just a nothing prospect. A first and two other good pieces for a rental 2C/3C isn't great.

I think Calgary did a great job getting ahead of the market, and I think it's key that Washington do the same with guys like Dowd, Mantha, Lindgren, and maybe TVR/Jensen rather than running out of suitors come TDL.

For a guy who averages 50 pts a year….

Which is it, not great or they did good to get ahead of the market?! lol…or are you saying not great for Vancouver?

I suspect the 1st rounder is the only real thing of potentially high value..

But Lindholm does play center, something they really need if they're going to have a shot against their division opponents. I don't know if they can swing an extension but the fit this year is pretty solid and they get him for an addition month of games prior to the deadline. Aggressive? Sure. But I don't think it's an outrageous price to pay for a top target (again, particularly this year where the late first round doesn't seem all that appealing).

I had Lindholm my top trade target summer of 22. But he had a very bad showing as did the flames when that top line got broken up. Its pretty clear we know what the magic was for that line production now. Spoiler alert is Thachuk and his team made the finals.

2 years ago in the summer I might have paid that price, Today. Hell no!

I think the need is kind of there but I'm not very high on Lindholm. I don't think he really moves the needle as much as people think. If they were going to target a 2C I'd have rather they made an aggressive offer for Zegras, for instance.

I think Vancouver's bigger need is still defense. Their top pairing is excellent but their bottom two pairings aren't good at all. I'd rather they have spent these types of assets upgrading their D, of which there are some very good options. Chychrun, Walker, Tanev, and a few others may now be off the table. Are they really planning on playing Tyler Myers almost 20 minutes a night? That's a recipe for disaster.

Lindholm is a shooter, he needs a set up guy. Pettersson should be pretty good with him. I think it’s a fine bet for Van. Kuzmenko was basically a negative asset for them. They freed $5.5 mil next year with this move too.

But I do agree, start trading now. Lindgren, Dowd, Mantha, one of TVR/Jensen, and of course, Joel Edmundson

Vancouver doesn’t really need a guy like Zegras, though. Lindholm’s two-way game makes a lot more sense for their 2C. They like to load up the lotto line with Petey, Miller and Boeser. Along with Q. Hughes, they’re all scoring at insane levels.

So, even if Lindholm’s production has been a bit down, they don’t need him to be the guy there. Maybe he finds chemistry with someone like Mikheyev, who knows. Regardless, he gives them some needed flexibility as a matchup center.

I like the trade, and give them credit for getting it done early, possibly before a team like Boston could make the move.

Agreed that they should further upgrade their D, esp from the chaos giraffe, Myers.

Hefty price after a disappointing season.

I do get why they did it though... lots of teams need a top center and the next best one on the market is... Sean Monahan?

I think having as many scoring options as possible is crucial to a deep run. I know Vancouver has scored at a great rate this year but it's been very unsustainable. Their shooting percentage has been through the roof and they really need more scoring options for me to really consider them a true contender.

On top of being pretty overrated defensively, I just don't think Lindholm drives offense at all. I'd rather they have gotten creative if they were going to spend that much on a center. Otherwise I think they would have been much better served to use those assets on wingers and D that move the needle more and provide more bang for the buck.

No way Nic Dowd doesn't go for less than a first round pick, if they choose to do the needful.

Might be a market for Kuznetsov yet.
Since you already noted that 2024 may not be a strong draft class, no need for immediate gratification. Buyers may be more willing to part with higher draft picks in future drafts beyond 2024. Take a page from the 1970s Canadiens and stockpile future draft picks (2025, 2026 etc.)
