With the Nashville news, how did you old timers rate Polie as Caps GM?
At the risk of identifying as an old timer... ;)

I was 10 years old when Poile took over the Caps and those were the first years of real relevance the franchise had ever had. He made the big trade that basically saved the team and the years after were thrilling and repeatedly heartbreaking. But he turned the Caps from a laughingstock into a playoff team and that was not a small accomplishment.

His achilles heel was goaltending, which I guess was a lesson learned, given the string of outstanding goalies he brought to Nashville.

A bit thrifty and not great at spending on superstars and top scoring threats (at least in the 90s other than Bondra), but got them competitive after years of shittiness, iirc.

More or less created the 1998 Cup team and handed it off to McPhee to drive to the finish line.

Thrifty was on Abe…..no doubt there.

Poile has had an amazing shelf life. Great hockey mind…..HOFer, loved his D men and drafted them well. Never had the same luck with on the other side of the ice….

As a fellow old-timer (and man that kinda hurts, ha), what everyone else said was pretty spot on about what he did for the franchise to give it some much needed respectability.

On a personal level, my dad knew a guy that worked with Poile, and we’d get excellent tix right by the boards ~ 12 times a year. So, I remember him quite fondly for allowing me to grow up in that nasty old Caps Center. Seeing guys like Langway, Gartner, Hunter and Ridley - as well as league stars like Lemieux/Jagr a bunch…Good times.

Hath and Orlov assist on a Nosek tying goal for Bs 20 seconds after McDavid scored
I am waiting for the "we lost another trade" comments to come rolling in

(having said that I actually think the return was pretty meh. Those are all going to be VERY late round picks and Smith has no trade value at all)

Not gonna lie: Orlov and Hathaway look good in Boston colors. What a pickup by the Bs.

I think the Bruins are going to fall off a cliff in a couple years so the 2025 pick will be mid-round at worst.

I'm fairly pro-GMBM but I was also surprised at how mild the return was. I guess that's what you get for sweeping Columbus' rug out from under them but Orlov is a gem worth closer to the Jeannot return than what Jeannot is
