The approach should be a combination of long term assets (draft picks) plus short term assets (high level prospects, players 25 or younger i.e. Kravtsov, Chychrun, Girard).

Team needs to get younger and faster.

The Ottawa Senators have traded defenseman Nikita Zaitsev to the Chicago Blackhawks, in a move that concludes the Senators’ widely-reported efforts to find a taker for Zaitsev before the March 3rd trade deadline.

The Senators have dealt Zaitsev, a 2023 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-rounder to Chicago for future considerations, effectively paying the Blackhawks two draft choices to take on Zaitsev’s $4.5MM AAV contract, one that runs through the end of next season. Of note is the fact that the Senators will save nearly $6MM in real cash through this deal.

We should clear up the cap space and claim him for next season and just hope he gets back to his secondary scoring ways. Put him with Mantha so we can really watch that trade percolate.
If we did trade a lot of our unrestricted free agents, he would certainly be an interesting option if we needed NHL players to fill out the roster.

Ideally, we make the Red Wings pay us to take him back like we had to pay for them to take panik

Our UFAs are mostly defensemen getting paid nothing. We have to replace them in the lineup with defensemen getting paid nothing.

Vrana assigned to AHL.

Good news ladies and gentlemen, we've won the trade yet again
Can't be good for his psyche. Don't know what the issues are and don't want to speculate. What I know is he's a talented forward with speed and who'll turn 27 next week and has one year remaining on his contract after this season.

So much noise being made on the main boards regarding Luke Schenn. I just don't get it. His contracts alone suggest how teams value him.

It was pretty widely reported in the Detroit media that Vrana would never play a game again for the Red Wings and that Detroit was either going to trade him or buy him out this summer. I suspect he was only recalled due to a lack of any other option. One of the Detroit writers said the relationship is broken beyond repair from both sides and knew why but wasn’t at liberty to provide details.

Who nobody in their right mind should consider adding to their team right now….(until you’re as assured as you can that the personal stuff is addressed and never to reoccur).

Looks like Patrick Kane is going to the Rangers. Deal is still being worked out but Ranger prospects Vitali Kravtsov and Zachary Jones are two named in the potential deal with picks going to a third team to help deal with the financial burden of Kane's cap hit. Source Stefen Rosner, NYI Hockey

No, he spent less than 10 games in the NHL
He's in the line up tonight against the Rangers.

Truly an end of an era today IMO. It's just a matter of how quickly reality dawns on them and they manage to rid themselves of some of their increasingly burdensome vet forward contracts (Kuznetsov, Backstrom, Oshie and of course Mantha). Strome at 5x5 under the circumstances also doesn't seem amazing.

The system is also dreadfully thin and I'm not sure one trade deadline, led by a top 10ish pick, cures that. It's a process...perhaps a fairly long one to get back into contention.

They have to move one of Backstrom or Kuznetsov. Strome at 5x5 is solid if they can upgrade at center elsewhere. Strome can also shift to the wing if need be. If I got my way I’d trade some of what we got today just to get rid of Backstrom. They have $17M tied up between Kuznetsov and Backstrom and they’re two of the worst players on the team.

Saw this coming out of St. Louis today and thought a lot of it applied to Washington's top players as well.

They should trade Wilson too because there is absolutely no way his next contract isn't a huge albatross. He's already declined so much.

Oshie and Backstrom need to do the right thing and LTIRetire.

I'm hoping Oshie's quotes about literally not being able to walk some days was him laying the groundwork with the league and the fans.

Is MacLellan now fighting for his job? The prospect of back-to-back playoff misses is a real possibility given the strength of the East and trajectory of their weakened core group. He needs to stack a lot of wins in a hurry to think they're back on the right track. Even if there has been ownership interference which has saddled them with declining players that doesn't explain their significant decline in drafting and development over quite a long stretch now.
