Matheson is trying to get a quote that ends in Draisaitl throwing his team under the bus. That’s a question for a coach or GM. It was clear he wasn’t gonna get a good answer so you move on. Happens pretty often, especially if a team is losing all the time. But he had to dig his heels in and then called him pissy.

what a clown, he deserves one word answers for the rest of his time as a reporter. Completely unprofessional

Nobody here has questioned his leadership or natural abilities.

I think there’s probably a place closer to a real answer a mature leader would have responded with….or, just say no comment. It’s a poor look for both.

Ovechkin would get slaughtered by the press if he did that.
Ovechkin has given one word answers before but no one in our media world called him pissy to his face. Matheson is a prick

Matheson's initial question was a boring and generic one, but not offensive in any way. Draisatl gave him a vague, but true, answer that was a clear sign to move on for anyone with even a tiny bit of social skills. When Matheson went back to get the "expanded answer" is when things went off the rails. There are times it makes sense for a reporter to get pointed and press for specific answers, but this was not one of them. Pressing for a nothing burger quote from one of the most generic questions imaginable is childish.
seemed a lot like a trap to me. He wanted some groundbreaking drama, or for Draisaitl to throw someone under the bus by mistake... or I guess he really wanted to fish for some extra cliche quotes he can pepper in. Asking what he asked is only going to get you recycled garbage or pure drama.

I was shocked at the terminology, but after the way he answered the previous question….he kinda deserved it also lol…things get tense in the press room when teams are floundering….this is not a big deal.

I was hoping Drai was going to pop up like “Chris” Everett on Jim Rome!

Now that would have been an overreaction, but a darn hilarious one!

Some weird takes here on Draisatl who has done more than his share as a leader of that team and has established himself as a top five player in the world. If he was honest he would have said, “Well, our GM is no way qualified for his job and the team is not any better off than when he got here. We have no bottom six, terrible goaltending, a porous defense, and if Connor or I aren’t on the ice we’re getting pounded. My prime and Connor’s prime are being wasted so why don’t you go ask the guy who put this roster together why this isn’t working?”
Is he thinking like that though? :P

The reporter was clearly trying to bait Draisaitl. When he didn't fall for it, the reporter reacted like a child that didn't get what he wanted. Imagine being a 40 year veteran HOF reporter and asking a player "Why are you so pissy?".

The Oilers are a farce of an organization, and Canadian sports media is full of douchebags with overinflated egos.

Watching all of these Edmonton sports media guys act like victims because one of their own called an NHL player “pissy” is hilarious as if other reporters around the league never have to deal with grumpy players

lol and acting baffled because professional athletes don't like losing and aren't in the mood to pal around and give answers they may not even have.

This. IMO Matheson was already angry and looking to stir shit up (telling everyone to be angry and thus conveying his own anger), and when Drai didn't bite he pushed. Drai pushed back knowing Matheson was agitating based on that article.

If you're around a storied organization for 40 years you probably start to feel like you own it in some way. Or that you can move the needle. Maybe he's done something like this before and started a chain of events that led to a firing or some improvement, and figured he could do it again.

I'm much less inclined to blame the player in this situation because he DID answer the question. The reporter didn't accept the answer and tried to dig further and that brought in all the backstory.

It's a hockey interview, not a trial. There is no obligation to respond beyond what's in your contract.

My sincere hope is that Tortorella is their next HC. If it can't be Torts, then let it be Bill Belicek!

Rangers get handedly outplayed once again and somehow pull off a 6-3 win. 3rd worst xG% in the league at 5v5, ahead of only Arizona and Buffalo, and right behind Chicago and Montreal. Scary company for them. If their PP goes cold or Shesterkin is merely good instead of other worldly, they’re in trouble. Smoke and mirrors.

I remember that and was always an Everett when he was Rams QB. I can't stand Rome and would love to see more of that.
