The arrogance with some of these guys is astounding, as is the lack of awareness. I’d lose my mind if I had to deal with that on a regular basis.

It’s just annoying because instead of asking pointed questions at an MVP caliber player and blaming him, perhaps it might be wise to ask pointed questions to the management group that has blown it for years.

I find Draisaitl to be unprofessional in that clip myself, but big picture…who cares? Tons of athletes battle the Press.
If you’re a Leader, accountability and areas for improvement should be a constant focus (among other things) and discussions should be expected.
I’d be more interested to know the history between these two….
It’s easy to see why Caps beat reporters don’t go down that road lol…

The legacy Edmonton press has continually carried water for Ken Holland, and Peter Chiarelli before him.
The question was uncomfortable but there was no purpose to it other than provoke Draisaitl. Does he expect an honest response from Draisaitl? "Yeah, me and Connor have been good but the rest of our teammates and management really stink!"
Either ask boilerplate questions to fill your quota, as most Capitals beat writers do, or ask a compelling question to a person who can provide an answer.

Did you watch the entire press conference? Seems like it would be difficult to determine intent. If you have a problem with Sports Reporters asking inane questions, well…sorry, it’s been that way forever. Comes with the territory.
Mature professionals learn to navigate these things because you know they are not going away.
The follow up question about “showing frustration”…..now that was a solid attempt to elicit a reaction lol…
I thought both of them were unprofessional and immature. It would have been easy enough for Drai to "expand on that" with more rote jibberish like "we have to forecheck better, defend better, the PP needs to be better, the PK needs to be better, everything" and then Matheson would just kinda have to move on. But there even when he didn't get the "expanded" answer, asking why he was so pissy lately was just total horseshit from a reporter. Both of them were cringey.
If I ran Edmonton's PR I'd revoke his credential for that bit.

Matheson's initial question was a boring and generic one, but not offensive in any way. Draisatl gave him a vague, but true, answer that was a clear sign to move on for anyone with even a tiny bit of social skills. When Matheson went back to get the "expanded answer" is when things went off the rails. There are times it makes sense for a reporter to get pointed and press for specific answers, but this was not one of them. Pressing for a nothing burger quote from one of the most generic questions imaginable is childish.

I mean no player is going to like having the compete level of the entire team called out….but is he wrong?

A reporter asking a player "why are you so pissy lately" strikes me the exact proper response is to tell the reporter he can report from outside the room from now on. Press passes are a privilege, not a right.

I was shocked at the terminology, but after the way he answered the previous question….he kinda deserved it also lol…things get tense in the press room when teams are floundering….this is not a big deal.
I was hoping Drai was going to pop up like “Chris” Everett on Jim Rome!

Both were being shitty but the article seems like fuel for the " you know everything" comment. Writing that everyone should get mad and demand bag skates etc etc... I can understand the pissiness in response especially if already frustrated with a shitty team YOU JUST ADMITTED SUCKS AT EVERYTHING LOL. How about just accepting that answer?
Some weird takes here on Draisatl who has done more than his share as a leader of that team and has established himself as a top five player in the world. If he was honest he would have said, “Well, our GM is no way qualified for his job and the team is not any better off than when he got here. We have no bottom six, terrible goaltending, a porous defense, and if Connor or I aren’t on the ice we’re getting pounded. My prime and Connor’s prime are being wasted so why don’t you go ask the guy who put this roster together why this isn’t working?”

Nobody here has questioned his leadership or natural abilities.
I think there’s probably a place closer to a real answer a mature leader would have responded with….or, just say no comment. It’s a poor look for both.
Ovechkin would get slaughtered by the press if he did that.
