This is what you have in your hand now, you can choose which way to go:

Finish 8th and get:

1st round FLA
2nd round: TOR or TB
3rd round: BOS or NYR

Or finish 3rd in metro and get:

1st round NYR (possibly CAR)
2nd round: CAR
3rd round: FLA TB or TOR

The 8th seed must beat every single top team to get to the finals.

Its actually not given since its a division based format not a straight 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7 etc. Just happens to be that FLA, TB and TOR are probably the best teams in the east in my opinion outside WSH, so the Atlantic division bracket is stacked.

Honestly, I couldn't care less who we end up facing. We're coming in as the underdogs against any top team in the East. The Caps have lost so many playoff series when they were the favorites, they haven't won as the underdog since they upset the Bruins in 2012.

I wanted FLA few months ago.
Now I want CAR with their goalies problems.
But I think we will get NYR with a hot goalie.

What a great picture. Not only are they two of the coolest dudes who ever walked the planet, but look at how Guy is a couple inches taller than Paul but Paul puts his elbow on Guy's should to suggest "I'm the big dog on this race track"... like a canine show of dominance. Or maybe I'm over analyzing it :D

I think Paul is like, uh, that guy might have more charisma than even me

HUGE night of hockey tonight! Things will get a little more clearer for some teams
