Goalie coaching is weird. Not a ton of high end professional goalies end up as great goalie coaches. Not to say it never happens (Burke, Irbe, Ranford, Roloson, etc), but many of the most sought after and highly effective goalie coaches weren't NHL goalies (Korn, both Allaire brothers, Ian Clark, Stephane Waite, etc). Just because a player was a great goalie with a great temperament doesn't always give them the ability to share that knowledge effectively with others. Good goalie coaches have enough physiological knowledge and creativity to be able to find the issues with a goalie's form and conceive of drills or workouts to correct even tiny flaws.

Not saying Holtby couldn't do it, but there's a pretty big leap between playing in net and teaching how to netmind.

Dale Hunter is almost universally revered. You should hear Jonesy who by all accounts hates the Capitals go on and on for his love of Dale Hunter. If you could ask people in the know a few questions, you might find Huntsie is one of the great Captains of all time. No comparison.

I won't defend what Hunter did to Turgeon. He let Turgeon's cheering get to him and should have made better choices, however I get his frustration at the time. That said, he did most of stuff protecting his teammates against people like Verbeek. Hunter also paid the price with one of the biggest suspensions in league history while a guy like Verbeek didn't. I don't like players that take cheap shots that can't really back it up. Sure, Verbeek got into some scrums, but he was mostly pure dirty. The last I remember of him was Verbeek getting bloodied against the Bruins in the 91 series. I know he went on to play with NYR, Dallas, and Detroit, but I forgot about him at that point. Verbeek was also known as 'little ball of hate" which describes how most fans of teams think of him.

The off season must have bit me here but I just heard that Pat Foley is calling it quits. Saw that the Hawks are getting banged around for firing him, which was lost in the whole Rocky mess. Doc and Pat gone so close to each other and John Forslund on the west coast. It hurts

Another thing McPhee got right was keeping Dale Hunter involved with the franchise. Ask John Carlson about Dale Hunter. Does MacLellan still keep Hunter in the loop?

I think he does. He played with similar types in guys like Tim Hunter, Gary Roberts, etc. Stand up character guys who value their teammates, organization, and not afraid to mix it up. Those days are ending I"m afraid. Go back and watch those old games from 70s to current and you can see a big change in NHL hockey. I miss the old days :(.

I dont miss the old 3 penalties each side per game days where after the 3rd pp you could assassinate a guy and get away with it. Do you remember the Caps first time in the playoffs Bryan Murray basically used 3 defensemen with Rod Langway playing double lenth shifts? It was basically Langway, Engblom and Stevens with Holt getting the occasional shift so he could fight.

So...nothing on Kaprizov's stellar Ovechkin impersonation? Kirill2DCin2026
I’m out of town so I didn’t see it until this morning but I may be a Minnesota Wild fan now. Doesn’t hurt that Kirill is one of the best players in the league to watch.

Except for Bill Guerin. Not a fan of that dude.

Also, what the f*** Trevor Zegras? He’s unbelievable. Eight guys were taken over him in the 2019 Draft — seems dumb.

I recorded the skills comp.

Any reason to watch it?
I'm surprised nobody talks about it. I haven't watched it, but saw Kaprizov's and Zegras' ones. They are pretty cool. Kaprizov's challenge is funny and Zegras' is sick. Was thinking that the NHL should invite young or new players who are excited to go and will entertain.

I'm becoming a fan of these two players. Though Zegras burns out every time we play Anaheim. Low key want Kaprizov will do same haha.

This game is such a terrible product….the NHL should be embarrassed watching guys repeatedly on 2-0’s with the goalie….everyone half dogging it. I see more intensity in warmups of a regular season game.
