I think you just need to allow all name calling at this point otherwise you are going to wind up with even more wacky suspensions than this.

If a kid is loaded with acne I can call him a pizza faced loser

If a kid is overweight I can call him fat POS

But nooo attacking someone's religion and calling them a mennonite because you think his religion is dumb is wayyy too offensive and mean...

Where do we draw the line? How about just no mean comments allowed at all. Seems fair for everybody

This is pretty much the conundrum of human nature. We set rules to protect people from the evil side, but where do we draw the line? So totally joking, but I've noticed a severe lack of ugly hockey players these days. We might need rules to keep them from being insulted and spaced out of the league.

It used to be simpler, if it was too far, you simply punched them in the face. no suspensions, no PC police and still lesson learned. I've been on both sides, and it works lol

Was the player actually a Mennonite?

Its a compliment where I come from.
not sure, don't know what player it was.

The line should be racial and homophobic. That's a pretty obvious place to draw it, imo.

I don't care about religion getting abused. That's a choice.

I don't care about fat and ugly, either. That's 80% of men.

All joking aside, I live among both Mennonites and Amish in my region. Mennonites are similar to Amish in some ways, but allow more modernity. Matter of fact, some Mennonites drive the Amish to Walmart since Amish aren't supposed to drive. Last month I saw an Amish woman drive out of the Walmart parking lot in a CRV loaded with Amish women. Thought I was hallucinating, but it happened. Maybe the Mennonites are having a bad influence on the Amish. Hope she doesn't get shunned. That's really bad.

In any case, this suspension is beyond stupid. I highly doubt Mennonites would take offense at their name being invoked. They are very chill and awesome people with an amazing sense of humor, something too many people in authority have lost .

If I were to be intentionally nit-picky, I'd say it's hard to see how insults against Marchand's appearance are not suspension worthy. I'm sure most of his antics are reactionary from very early on in his career. So not necessarily inside the rule book, but by a consistent value system of not demeaning people for silly things, it doesn't really check out?

Even that. Acne often isn't a choice, why can I call someone pizza face but I can't call a kid a homo?

This is a serious question, I'm not being facetious or trying to be controversial.

Say the kid getting called pizza face is 100x more self conscious about his appearance than the kid being called a homo is about his sexual preference...

Growing up I've seen cruel things happen to ugly or overweight kids constantly, almost daily.. I don't recall ever seeing a gay kid get picked on

In some leagues you can't even call a kid a p***y anymore without being suspended for being "derogatory".

I sound like the old guy yelling at clouds but we seriously have fallen into a soft rabbit hole that doesn't seem to end.

Yes in some parts of the world being gay is a sin, even resulting in punishment [MOD] Life is hard. Suck it up and play.

"Mennonite".... Oh that poor kid

I think not making fun of Brad Marchand is suspension worthy. And I think he'd be the first to tell you that he invites it and it's part of his job.

Yes in some parts of the world being gay is a sin, even resulting in punishment or death but here in North America we are civilized. Life is hard. Suck it up and play.

I think the context is very important.

Bullying a regular kid based on his appearance (or any other reason) repeatedly is bullying. I don't condone bullying.

Calling somebody an "ugly f***" or even a p***y because he just cheap-shotted you in a hockey game is completely different. I think we all vent in the heat of a hockey game. I do it just watching.

Hahaha, he learned to roll with the punches for sure. The hate can sometimes help people rise higher. But is uncontrollable appearance really not in the same category as race? Same ballpa... hockey rink?

No, that's true, and like I said, I don't condone abuse or actions away from the rink. I think talking shit that doesn't cross into outright bigotry is part of sports.

Exactly, you get what I'm saying. Maybe this is a case of reading the headlines instead of being on the ice, to where tone could be heard, because there are so many nastier things to say to a person. Calling someone ugly, or dumb, or useless, is more demeaning!

Pretty sure if rather be called a mennonite than an ugly f**k lol

While this seems pretty ridiculous to suspend over in a vacuum, I do find it interesting that, on a forum that is obsessed with bashing refs/rules for gray areas and always saying "just call it by the book", there's so many in here essentially "well yea, it was against the rules, but nah". If, as I understand it, he meant to use the term in a disparaging way, it seems to be pretty clearly against the rules and subject to a required 5 games.

Again, still a silly thing to be suspended over, but l think it has much less to do with being "paper soft these days" and more to do with making a point to follow the rule across the board (so that you do not create situations where someone who truly deserves the punishment claims the whole "but but but what about them" BS). The fact that he has history with previous suspensions for language didn't help things, I'm sure.

Guy was trying to be too clever with his trash talking, got caught, and by the letter of the rule, got suspended.

Maybe if he had spent more time playing hockey than thinking up dumb insults he'd be a "NHL Player" instead of a "NHL Prospect".

Then again, some men, you just can't reach, So you get what we had here...

Yeah at the end of the day it's following the rule book. So that's pretty equal. Think insults like that aren't really paraded around that much, because they're such a minority, so it comes off more in a funny way, which is unfair. Think a lot of people just want less regulation in general.

Yeah great post. I'm sure he spent wayyy too much time thinking of insults, so much so that it took away from his hockey training time... Yes, for sure.

OHL (or CHL) make the rules and I guess they didn't want to have to decide whether an ethnic/religious comment is a slur or not, so blanket ban.

I would've preferred some room for exercise of discretion, ONCE per perpetrator. This would probably have been a good case for it, but even then... it brings us back to why it would be allowed in that case and not in another potential case.
