My initial gut reaction was to think that this was stupid, but then again this probably falls under the purview of not wanting to use religious or ethnic terms of any kind as a term of disparagement. So I guess I kind of understand drawing the line at the ridiculous to serve as a bulwark against actual heinous ****.

That being said, 5 games even as a blanket catch all seems ridiculous for this, but ridiculously light for a major slur.

1 player can say "I am going to f*** your mother in the ass tonight!!" no issue
player 2 can say "F U ya Mennonite!" Player 2 gets suspended

Make it make sense
Well, someone (not me obviously) would probably argue that threatening to rape someone is perfectly in line with what Canadian hockey currently stands for, so no suspension for saying that would make sense.

Maybe gotta go with the Mike Tyson method for sexual dominance threats

"I'll f*** you, till you love me"

If someone ever called me a Catholic in a fit of rage I'd probably bust out laughing
I'll admit, the one time someone did actually call me a "f***ing Jew" IRL to my face, my reaction was more confused pity than anger. Mostly because it was this little old lady glaring at me in the parking lot of a grocery store near the cart return. I never got a response to my confused reply of "Uh, what?"

That’s an excellent point.

But then it moves into a believable threat.

If a young Canadian hockey player threatens to sexually assault someone, I pay attention.

Canadian Judge: “The court finds that you’ve consistently turned the other cheek to a significant, long standing problem in your organization. How do you defend yourself against the argument that it is your callousness that has created a culture in which these atrocities occur, seemingly, again and again?”

Hockey Canada: “Hey, we got the OHL to suspend a guy for calling someone a Mennonite last month.”

I hope some NHL players see this suspension and have some fun with it. If we happen to see a scrum break into smiles then we know someone called someone a Mennonite lol

Hahaha pretty much! For me it's curiosity, which could be what comes after pity, and before indifference. We can't be insulted by people that don't know us as much as we know ourselves. So know ourselves and people like that start looking silly.

This guy was suspended last season for calling a player a p***y, too.

Are other players getting suspended for this same stuff or does the league just hate him for some reason? Because this is absolutely embarrassing how f***ing soft every part of society is becoming. If you’re okay with players getting suspended for mundane trash talk like this, you are the problem.
You sound soft tbh

Maybe it was more in the vein of the infamous "Lets eat, Grandma" and "Lets eat Grandma", and it was just taken out of context.
