I think even if the player *was* a Mennonite the tone matters. You can't use it in a pejorative way, even if it's accurate.

Just like any other ethnic or religious term, the tone and context makes a big difference. I do not think there is any nice way of calling someone a Mennonite in the heat of a hockey game.
Where I'm confused is factors like looks, height etc are all fair game and not a choice while religion is a choice. So if I were to make a chart rating harder hitting insults, the ones against things you can't change would sit higher.

They’re sort of like Amish people but not quite as extreme in their interpretation of scripture.

I believe they’re pacifists so perhaps calling someone one is a way of calling him a wimp?
Who the f*** are you to characterize the Amish that way?

You and your damn Homo Sapiens friends think they can just say whatever comes to mind these days, I guess.

And to answer @MXD , you're sort of correct. People associate them with the Amish, but that's basically Pennsylvania haha. They're a branch of the anabaptist movement, fantastic farmers
I mean, a branch of my family was (and still is, I suppose) Mennonite. It just never occured to me that it could be used in an insult-ish fashion (like... errhhmmmm.... other religious creeds).

To some extent, how others have reacted to such things also affects it. For example, I flinch a bit more at folks who don't care for me being a Jew because, well, we all know what's happened there.

It's just very messy and nuanced. If there was a simple system to rate and remove the Truly Bad, we'd likely have widely deployed it by now and this wouldn't be a problem anymore. It's still a problem (and has been a problem forever, and will likely continue to be one) because it's extremely complex.

Nah, it’s still the guy complaining about a word on the internet.
I'm barely noticing that a player has been suspended for a violation of some discipline bylaws. A few people ARE complaining about that suspension though.

Not f***ing around is the easiest way of not finding out.

Youre from Vancouver no? There's a tonne of them in the Fraser Valley

I know that pronouns can be used different ways these days, but I was raised to believe that when you referred to a group as "them" it was offensive.

So therefore, despite not speaking to me directly, I would like an apology. You hurt my sensibilities and brought me back to a time when I got in trouble for using the wrong terminology.

Thank you in advance, you Billington Lover.

Well no, being offended by that would be soft.

Would be really funny to see someone suspended for calling a player an Anglican lmao
There's no evidence that anyone has been offended by this. The ref only did its job by reporting the violation.

And yes, it IS weird, because Mennonite doesn't carry any connotation as far as I know. I suppose they just put a line in the sand.

Just call the guy "soft-brained donkey", case closed. It's also significantly meaner than "Mennonite".

Only answer I can offer is one of "Player 2 has been up to far more shit" and/or "That's probably not how it actually happened".
no no that wasn't meant to be an interaction, just an example of something 2 different players have said at different times on the ice and the general outcome

player 1 can say "I am going to f*** your mother in the ass tonight!!" no issue
player 2 says "whatever ya Mennonite!" Player 2 gets suspended

Make it make sense
It's a progression thing. Clearly in the OHL rule book, ass f***ing is generally ok but ONLY in a certain context. Even that has limits.

For example, if player 3 says "I am going to f*** your Mennonite mother in the ass tonight" shit is going to get real.

Imagine the sensitivity training, "I'm going to need you to focus on the f***ing, the mother, the ass and less on the Mennonite part" lol

In hindsight, we all have mothers and they do have asses so as far as insults go its pretty inclusive lol

If true, this is hilarious. Pleading ignorance doesn't make one any less guilty of the intent.

As someone upthread said, call someone ugly, stupid, whatever. But even though the term Mennonites aren't a "slur", it's literally representative of someone's way of life, their culture.

Probably shouldn't be using words you don't know the meaning of, kid, in any context. Not very skibidi cap of them.

Yeah article says his agent said he didnt understand the term

People can debate the rule, but this is simply enforcing the rule

As a Mennonite that comes from names like Dyck, Dueck, Groening and Thiessen I’m calling on the OHL to just disband because they are cooked.

Its hockey, shit talking is part of the game. At its core theme shit talking is a form of marginalization so to use that as a guide is silly.

Doesnt matter if it is silly

that rule is in place, and they can't really fine them like they would in the pro's so here is the outcome.

We don’t need defending from people calling us what we are. This is embarrassing, have some pride man.

If p***y and Mennonite are suspension worthy how are there not suspensions five times a game?

Guess you gotta get real personal nowadays. Find out they have an absent father or something and really dig into that. Imply they have a learning disability. Just relentlessly point out a scar they have visible.
