Not sure I understand but I’m afraid that all of this is gone to far. We brow beat or judge people too quick. We are moving farther and farther away of educating people who have stereotypes and just punishing people. More and more people as a result will just hide their feelings. Are we progressing or regressing

Mennonites are pacifists and anti violence. It wasnt uncommon(but also not super mainstream) to call someone that didn't want to fight in war(specifically WW2) a quacker or Mennonite in a perjoritive manner(as seen in Band of Brothers by Bill Guarneer).

He got suspended for calling someone a p***y last year, he's just reaching into the history books to do the same thing.

I thought it was quackers who pacifists and anti violence?

The one thing to take away from his comments, is that at least he got creative

Where he lives is likely the answer. Lots and lots of Mennonites in the not too far away area. Though he should have known it isn't a good insult at all, and no Menno cares.

Haha, no it really isn't.
How is it not ? I personally think it should be open season for trashing talking. Anything goes. But that's besides the point.

Would you think its ok for a player to say "haha ya f"in Sikh" to a Sikh player ?

I know you are being facetious but you've actually hit on something.

I can call someone a Jew and be 100% correct and legit and inoffensive. I have Jewish friends who will discuss the current climate by saying "as a Jew, I think.....". It is descriptive word used regularly around the world that can also be used as a slur.

But it's not like the N word. That has always been a nasty slur that a group of people effectively took back as part of pushback against generations of atrocious behavior around the world. As in "I can say that word........ but YOU cannot."

The word Jew does not fit in that category. Rag head is a non starter and you know it.

The reason I go into this though, is that you raised an issue that requires one to officiate intent.

#25 - four minutes for attempting to knock a guys teeth out. He missed, but he tried.
Saying "haha ya f'in Jew to a Jewish player on the ice. Ok or not ok ?

In some ways it is more offensive than an actual slur. Just being an Mennonite or a Jew is the insult.

I guess but it still feels a little too sanitary. I personally don't understand how it's insulting unless you're spicing it up but then I'm not a Sikh or Buddhist or Mennonite. Like i get why yelling "towel head!" at a Muslim is worth a suspension but not "Muslim!" even allowing the guy meant it pejoratively and not a statement of fact. I can accept it though.

Because calling someone a Mennonite or Sikh is the insult. The player saying it obviously is not a Mennonite or Sikh. It isn't a slur. But it is the insult.

I don't see why it should be open season on central European players. With different rules for everyone else.

There was a not so bright guy we used to play against. He would chirp stuff that didn't even make sense or was out in left field. It was so stupid it was funny.

That was my initial reaction to this incident. It's such an odd thing to chirp that it's funny. Mennonites are well respected and great people. If someone called me a Mennonite I would actually be honored that they thought so highly of me.

We know what derogatory words are. Those words should garner punishment. "Mennonite" does not have a history of being a derogatory word. People in North America and Africa (where most Mennonites live) largely don't even know who they are.

This foolishness has gone overboard. If people want to go full-blown technical they could find a reason to punish every chirp made.
This doesn't make sense. A Mennonite player was being chirped for being a Mennonite.

Would it be ok in your mind for a player to chirp this: "haha ya f'ing JEW" to Zack Hyman ?

Yes or no.

The problem everybody has with this type of sensitivity, is the lack of consistency, which translates to lack of authenticity.

But when the authorities do turn up the consistency, well now nobody can speak at all. And we get news like this example.

Take for another example, if it became punishable to suggest someone was ugly. This would create consistency in the law, because ugly people are the most poorly treated group in the world, and they are of every race. It's poor taste to call someone ugly, but should it be punishable by law? What defines a punishable* insult?
Lol what?

Yes or no.

I'd imagine Hyman would be more upset by protestors in Edmonton and Calgary chanting "from the river to the sea!" (and all that implies) like they did this past spring. But that's fine with people for some reason and speaks to the point that sometimes you have to hear things you'd rather not in life. Yes, to answer your question, it's fine. It's just another way of saying "f*** you!" to someone you're competing against in a game.

What's REALLY the infringement here that Sim should be punished for? Was this opposing player devastated? Did he feel unsafe? Does he feel unwelcome in a league of intolerance? Probably not and if he did then get over it. Players talk shit to each other.

The type of people who think a 5 game suspension for this is appropriate think they're building a better world, they're really just building a more censored world that exacerbates people's differences and makes them feel victimized by them.

I'm honestly surprised some teenage meathead who probably can't even spell "Mennonite" would put in the effort for that specific of a chirp.

I don't know what the hell you're saying in these last few posts, but they prompted me to think of something.

Are there any Sikh's playing ice hockey? If so, what do they do with their hair and hair cover? Have a special helmet made?

Also, to @x Tame Impala, is that Alan Watts in your avatar?

Actually DRW and Oilers for me.

Just my avatar character is a Jet… And a Canuck, and a North Star and Nordique, and a Colorado Rocky and a Devil and a Bruin and a DRW and a Flame.

And a Las Vegas Thunder.
Shoot, someone might get me for misidentifying you now... :naughty: hey I'm like that too though, more interested in players than teams now. Watching the Wings vs. Pens tonight!

Don't make comments on religious creed or ethnic origins. That's not difficult.

(Even if, in that case, unless there's something I don't know about the word Mennonites, it's just a denomination, like Catholic, just significantly less mainstream)
This..........................that said , pretty soft folks....

Such nonsense is hilarious in a contact sport.
100%. It's hilariously stupid. If he didn't like the lame chirp attempt then he could always run him through the boards. Maybe he'll think twice about doing it next time. Then again by bringing it to light he gets publicly embarrassed over using such a lame chirp, maybe that's worse 🤣
