Spittin' Chiclets is reporting as per sources that NHL Players will not be going to the Olympics. Hope this is a player-by-player basis, I for one would really enjoy a hybrid roster with NHLers, European league players, and AHL, NCAA, CHL etc players.

So it seems like it is not happening with NHL participation, because the owners want to have 82 game season. Some 40 games have'been postponed. China is not the problem, NHL is.

Yeah, this looks like a wag the dog sort of a situation with the owners using their lobbying tools to shape the public perception as well the behaviour of players.

Unfortunately, it almost looks like the decision was made a while ago.

Safety issues or what not is just a smoke screen.

A very sad reflection on the state of the sport, if that is true. The NHL is killing hockey all because of thicker profit margins.

That's not the issue. The issue is that it's up to the Chinese authorities to determine what actions are appropriate when someone does test positive. And their response has been overwhelmingly draconian.

Athlete tested positive will quarantine in a 4 star hotel modified to act like a hospital for basic treatment and more importantly treat athletes that are tested positive.

Normally if their own people are positive they will be treated in a hospital and quarantine there Authorities wanted better accommodation for visiting guests. Instead of staying in a hospital at least they are in their own private space in a hotel

like their own people , they will be released when they are tested double negative. Not sure where this 5 weeks is coming from.

Chinese “authorities” not forcing any athletes to come. Rules have been provided to these athletes. Authorities will not get their tissue box if athlete decides not come. No red carpet is rolling out for anyone.

Chinese authorities allowing vaccinated citizens to attend the games. Something that wasn’t available in Tokyo. China authorities doing a better job containing the virus than Japanese authorities.

athletes are able to travel around different venues and watch other events. Something that was also
Not available in the Tokyo games.

love your deliberate misinformation.

Btw, no athletes are being forced to go. I did mention that right ? One last thing, Chinese citizens also not forced to get vaccinated. Their actually not.

It is kind of logical. Professional hockey is a bussiness, games mean a lot of money. 40 postponed games is a lot.

Would like to see a NHL Olympic tournament, but won't be all that broken up about it if it doesn't happen.

Give me a legit World Cup minus the gimmicky teams.

or.

a 8 game summit series between Canada and the USA. It would be an epic border clash.

Killing hockey?

Cmon now the NHL sending players to China won't kill hockey.

It may stall hockey's growth in untraditional markets for a bit but the game is stronger than ever and will be just fine.

I swear I must stay off hfboards when I can't sleep. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills

HockeyNHL

Given that most people here are from North America, it might be hard for you to wrap your head around it, but that's the way it is.

Most hockey loving people don't spend a lot of time caring about the NHL. It's impossible to watch the games live, etc. It's just one extremely commercialized hockey league, which is trying to sabotage IIHF and the Olympic Games.

As true as that may be, the NHL did go to the Olympics 5 times in a row. Did that help? Would seeing Canada and Co whoop China help grow the game?

Would another final of Canada vs USA grow the game in Denmark or Germany?

What about the world championship, world Juniors and world cups / Canada cups? Pretty much every top NHL player ever has completed in these tournies at some point or another. Yet you say that people in Europe don't give a rats ass about the NHL? How would one more shitty covid Olympics In China of all places magically make a difference?

I am def biased because I care very little about international hockey. Just like most NFL fans don't give a shit about American football in Europe and most European football fans don't give a f*** about soccer in Canada.

Before covid the NHL was growing the game just fine with or without the Olympics and there are many countries that won't care about the sport regardless of if players from the NHL go or not.

If what you say is true about people from the other hemisphere not liking the NHL then why care if NHL players go or not.

There are plenty of good players in the European leagues.

Also calling the NHL over commercialized is a joke right? I mean have you see European league jerseys?

Well, the fact is that international comparisons around the world play an important role. Except in North America. Of course, it is attractive when the best of the best compete. Ice hockey is one of the very few sports where that doesn't apply. Because unfortunately it is not a world sport and is very much dominated by the NHL.

Everyone else is going. You're not making any sense.

Who is everyone else? At this point the NHL has various teams riddled with covid and the missed games are piling up. There are valid reasons not to go, and it seems likely that the NHL players for the most part are going to pull out as well. People are going to be mad and throw their online tantrums about this but it isn't an NHL issue this time.

Agreed and im sure the NHL would love to go if it wasn't in China and it wasn't for Covid. But im sure they weigh the risk vs reward and the reward is very minor for this specific tournament.

Hockey is a very expensive game to play and is mostly only played in countries with colder climates. Those are also usually the least densely populated countries.

But they still are growing the game slowly but surely. I just dont see how this one tournament makes much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.

Get over it guys.
Its not gonna happen.

Just enjoy the holidays adn we will see from then on.

Deep breaths everyone....remember the summer Olympics were postponed as well....the Omicron threat is very real. We may very well see this take place in 2023.

Highly predictable in the less couple weeks that NHL would pull. I still want to see a best on best with Crosby and McDavid on the same team.

Well, in other sports you are used to the best against the best. Therefore, it makes a big difference whether there is an NHL tournament in ice hockey or not.

What? I doubt that USA would even be in the final. Since 1984 USA has exactly 2 medals, both silver. In the meantime Finland has 6, Sweden has 5, Russia has 4 and Czechs 4.

For the first time in history Finland would actually have a legit offense. I have waited years for this and now cancelled.
