I'm very glad we get the second music video so soon, because I was very painstakingly deciding between this and Virtual Insanity, for entirely different reasons. I now select "The Sign" by Ace of Base and get to tell a short story.

Released in December of 1993, in around the time I was very much into MTV and VH1, and pretty much done with kids shows. Sitting there every day and watching it. Real World and all (I was 9). And one night they start playing The Sign (made it to #2 on the MTV top 20 countdown one week), and I just didn't understand watching it (a) why I liked it, (b) why I felt drawn to it, and (c) why I then stopped when it came on.

Now, keep in mind, this story is being told completely factually, and as it fits within the rules of the website, because it does and not nefariously going around them with insinuation - remember, I was 9, not a teenager.

Looking back it was the first time I made the connection between my head (not anything else) and attractive women acknowledging women as such. I'm not sure if it's the official definition, but it's the moment I most associate with my sexual awakening. After all, I was 9.

Sorry, was in a rush. I usually do read it all but not this time.

Dog had surgery again on two spots, one a lump and one a skin tag. She’s wearing what looks like a dog wetsuit so she can’t get to the main spot on her side but the staples on her leg are exposed. “It’ll be fine”, according to the vet. I’m skeptical.

Next morning I wake up and she had licked out all the staples on her leg. Back to the vet and new staples are put in and a bandage was put on top. “My bad. I should’ve known”, says the vet. Ok, cool.

A couple days pass and it’s time to get the staples out. Except nope, the one spot didn’t heal enough because the bandage put on it post-Lickgate was rubbing.

Now she has a giant dog cone on her head and no bandage over the staples for a few days so it can hopefully heal properly, which is making shit impossible because this idiot doesn’t understand the concept of space and is running into everything, unable to go up or down stairs, and so on. It’s like having a hairy Battlebot in the house. This was the first morning with it on so I was running around, trying to get her to settle down, eat her food so she can take her antibiotics/steroids, and stop running into shit.

The good news is the leg wound looks better than yesterday already and apparently the lump removed from her side ended up being benign.
Poor baby, hope she gets all better soon! Give her a hug from grandpa

It's a bad song, but your story is a good one lol

Before we pick, we have an important announcement!

In the spirit of the "Deuces Wild!" round, we are going to go a little crazy here. In collaboration with our Team Musician, we will be dedicating one of Mr. Yankovic's songs to each owner/franchise combination. We're still working out a few of the details, so we won't be releasing those dedications right now, but rest assured that with two mad geniuses in Mr. Yankovic and myself to determine which song goes where, everything will make perfect sense, either with regards to #Lore or as it ties into something selected by each franchise. As a special treat, we will be including the defunct franchises as well, to make sure they know they are not forgotten.

Now, as you all wait with baited breath to see how we smear honor you and your particular franchise, on to our first selection of this round.

For those who don't remember the time before the prequels, it was a barren wasteland. There had been a few books written in the Star Wars universe, but they were... barely adequate. Then this man came along and almost singlehandedly revived the franchise, at least from the perspective of the written word. But he is also a prolific and well regarded writer outside of Star Wars, and we look forward to the works he will produce in LA.

Team Author II: Timothy Zahn

Ha! Very similar experience. I discovered cleavage around the same age through a music video and boy what a video it is, i.e. peak hairspray 80's. I can't possibly imagine anyone is going to take it, but I'll avoid tipping it.

Pick incoming.

Team Author: Thomas Pynchon

img_9863.jpg

It was between Vonnegut and Pynchon for Author #1, and I already have both the excellent Mason & Dixon as Team Book and The Crying of Lot 49's muted post horn as team tattoo. I was introduced to Pynchon quite by accident by my then girlfriend and now wife, an English major. I started with V and then onto the aforementioned Mason & Dixon, which left me reeling by how much it changed my admittedly quite narrow idea of what literature was / was capable of. Bleeding Edge is missing from this stack, as is Slow Learner, but if you want to get a start, the bottom four are quite easy reads while the top three are decidedly less so, and honestly I don't think I'll ever give Against the Day a re-read.

@Chuck Downie

I agree with you almost entirely, but the very best place to start with Pynchon is with the short story "Entropy," especially if you can get one with all of the notes. It perfectly illustrates what he is about and is an easily digestible size. "Vineland" is the easiest novel to read by far, but "V" is better and more representative of his work. The great thing about this pick is that you could spend an eternity in the Quackverse with "Gravity's Rainbow" alone and never, ever get to the bottom of it or wear out everything he has to say.

The Provorov news made the morning Sportscenter, so that's awesome.

We start the day with @Beef Invictus on the clock, @JojoTheWhale on deck, @DancingPanther on the lido deck, and Toe on the lido afterdeck. Make sure you read the OP and follow the rules exactly. Good luck.

The oldest guy on the Divorced Singles Special of "I Am SOLO" had a total meltdown last night. It was very uncomfortable to watch, firstly because he was being crazy (due to being half in the bag on soju, which is delicious), and secondly because it was so sad. When he finally stopped arguing with the woman at the table in front of everyone, he went in his room and called his son, but he couldn't talk because he was crying. Blech, it was just a downer. The season as a whole hasn't been very "special." The other guy went on a 2-on-1 date with the hot ballerina and the guy she was clearly interested in (the two guys are roommates and friends). The first guy is a lawyer, and he spent the whole time tearing down the other guy right in front of him. It was pointless, because she had clearly made up her mind, and just totally obnoxious. The ep of "Singles Inferno" I watched was equally pointless. All in all, not a good night of viewing.

OK GEEZ. Finally. Between Provorov, the Flyers, and work today is something.

Combative Chuck! United Chuck! Complete Chuck! Thank you for handing it to me!

I CHOOSE:

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

My first favorite game. A life changer. Built on everything the first did, and did it better. Great levels, great speed, great bonus zones, great music.

Also, do you know why games and movies for ages were released on Tuesdays? This game. Before Sonic 2's release, shit got released whenever it got to stores. There was no firm release date. It would ship, and start showing up in places that had ordered it. One of the important services of game and movie zines was allowing fans to crowdsource where stuff was stocked.

Sega schemed up a firm release date so they could kick off advertising hype. They picked Tuesday just because it's a pun. They called it Twosday. Then everyone just always did it on Tuesday for a solid 2+ decades.

Smooth @JojoTheWhale! Prickly Jojo! Glossy Jojo!

Casino Night Zone blew my tiny little mind. I would purposely let the level timer run out while getting lost in that gambling sauce.

I still regularly play this with my little one. Still rules other than the underwater parts. I need to pick up Sonic & Knuckles.

What a brilliant thing Sonic and Knuckles was.

I got The Child Sonic Frontiers for her birthday. She's delighted by it, but so far she makes me play for her. She's starting to slowly take over though.

I've been thinking of picking that up for PS5. I'll probably wait for it get marked down later this year though. Right now i'm finishing up God of War: Ragnarok and then onto Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core Reunion.

Edit: Actually I might get the little one a Switch for her birthday in May so maybe Sonic for that would be better.

Sonic Frontiers is fantastically laid back. Music is great. Pace is relaxing, which is weird for a Sonic game. If you want Dark Souls, Elden Ring is always there. or GoW on hardest difficulty. This is for kicking back. These devs know their core audience is parents now, I think.
