Idk. I think Pittsburgh is pretty strict on retiring numbers. As they should be for the best non original six team in the league.

Imo, it should just be Lemieux, Jagr, Briere, Crosby and Malkin up in the rafters. They (Minus Briere) were the best of the best in the sport consistently. If you take Malkin or Crosby off any of those teams, they don't win the cup. If you remove Letang (4th-5th D in 09), they do win the cup. It was proven in 2017.

Letang was not consistently one of the two or three best Defenceman in the league. He's a borderline HOFer. His impact doesn't reach Crosby/Malkin.

Maybe honor him and guys like Barrasso, MAF. Don't give in to feel good stories and retire the #.

I'm of the opinion that a lot of these guys should probably be in the HoF. After all, it's the "Hall of Fame", not the "Hall of Compiled enough points or Acquired enough trophies".



These players who were among the best in their era but just never excelled quite enough in one specific area to land a major trophy, are often guys who were very "famous" in their time.

For me, that's what the Hall of Fame should be about. Enshrining the players that people looked up to most and remember from their respective eras.

Remember you don't have to have done anything important or won a championship to get in, it's just "Did you play a long time, get some points? You're in." Mike Gartner is one of the people that makes the call and he got a bunch of goals and zero awards right?
The Hockey Hall of Fame is one of the least demanding enclaves in sport; it could learn from the Baseball Hall, even with that sphere's issues.

Idk. I think Pittsburgh is pretty strict on retiring numbers. As they should be for the best non original six team in the league.

Imo, it should just be Lemieux, Jagr, Briere, Crosby and Malkin up in the rafters. They (Minus Briere) were the best of the best in the sport consistently. If you take Malkin or Crosby off any of those teams, they don't win the cup. If you remove Letang (4th-5th D in 09), they do win the cup. It was proven in 2017.

Letang was not consistently one of the two or three best Defenceman in the league. He's a borderline HOFer. His impact doesn't reach Crosby/Malkin.

Maybe honor him and guys like Barrasso, MAF. Don't give in to feel good stories and retire the #.

But Pittsburgh is the most successful expansion franchise. 50 years of mostly greatness and winning.

They set a standard. And as a whole, 71,87, and 68 are the only guys who should go up.

I agree we need to consider international play, but 2002 does absolutely nothing for Tkachuk. He scored 2 points in the entire tournament (one of which was a goal in a 6-0 blowout win). He had no points in the entire medal round.
In 1996 he was 5th on his team in scoring - a solid contributor. But one tournament (where he was good, but not great) doesn't change the fact that Tkachuk was generally a horrendous playoff performer.

(Note that John LeClair, another LW, was clearly better than Tkachuk in both of those tournaments, and he's not in the Hall either).

he did lead the NHL in goals twice in 1995 tie with bondra and 1997.
