I think the Gretzky trade, I mean Buch trade, triggered a lot of posters and they just weren't able to shake it off. It's always a shit show on draft day but it was pretty bad this go around.

We picked a giant goalie when we already have one of those in Ollas. And we got Shesterkin starting for at least 5-10 more years most likely, dumb pick by our team.
Should've picked Duke or someone else. We don't need another goalie.

And by the time you get to the third and fourth impression it can be harder and harder to shake what you've established.

If you botch something as badly as you botched the Buch trade, then follow it up with another couple uninspiring picks, opinion will rightfully go off the rails quickly.
When you f*** up like they did with Buch, they have to make up for it with a home run. Othmann was like a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to second base.
Grubbe was more of the same…. Ok in a vacuum, but taken too early to be really good value, and more of the same detested “toughness,” direction.
By time you get past the third round you are out of real estate to really make much of a difference, everything is a shot in the dark even if it’s a good selection.
