I remember back when Roenick had a podcast, he had Eddie O on and he had said the team was revolting and won the 94 Cup in spite of Keenan
I realize I’m gonna feel dirty for agreeing with Bobby but the Flyer announcers on air were vocal that something needed to happen.
He was worse than pedestrian in his own zone. Kind of playing the half wall covering nobody waiting for his mates to win the puck for him.
Claiming (I rarely see flyer games) Tortorella after sitting him a few shifts even tried getting him to cover a point man … which is exactly what Q did with Patrick Kane after sitting him a few shifts. The difference is Kane accepted the role.
If you don’t make any effort at all defensively it means your linemates are always playing shorthanded.
And for the record I’m no torts fans and was a Lightning STH when Craig Ramsey (asst coach) and Dave Andreychuk (grizzled veteran) stepped in to keep Lecavalier, Richards, St.Louis and Modin from quitting on him and going to ownership and demand he be fired.

So Q did the right thing, benching Kane for a few shifts, and not taking one of (or one of few in the Flyers case) your high offensive players completely out of the line up, but just letting him learn a lesson, in game? Talk to the kid, let him have a seat for a few shifts or even a period. Taking him out of 2 games is a ridiculous power trip by a power hungry coach.
I wrote they said he tried that. Didn’t work, not dressing had to be the next step and while some are pointing out the dumb penalty he was actually coming all the way back and playing his position. … not very well but honest effort is what he gave.

Lol didn't work. Not one Flyer fan agrees with the move, that tells you all you need to know. Just because an announcer said that they agreed with it means diddly squat. He did the same shit with their captain last year, didn't make a difference.

You may be right. Considering the talking heads work for the team but the midday guys on NHL radio kind of agreed that he needed the wake up call and Mike Johnson is a former player.
I watch pretty much every game of 4 teams (Hawks, Panthers, Leafs and Oilers) I’ve seen maybe 2-3 Flyers games and am not going to pretend was watching studiously so I’m not claiming to know (eye test or otherwise). Plus what a fans sees on TV is very limited.

To be fair, I think the "country club" derision didn't start until 2012 or so, so those lazy losers only won two Cups.
HF fans right and announcer wrong, don't make sense. Average HF fan barely knows rules and average announcer knows quite pit more than just rules.
What a stupid statement. It’s not “ country club” to maximize players skills, it’s good coaching and getting the most out of the assets you are given.
In either Kanes case then or the Flyers now if you push them too far to play defense you will hurt their offense, and their skill sets tell anyone with a brain they will never become Doug Jarvis.
You seem to ignore that offense isn’t easy either. Sure a guy like Kane expends minimal energy “covering” a point man but once turning to offense it’s Keith and Seabrook manning points, a guy on the wall and a guy in the slot while Kane is skating -stick handling and in general CREATING offense.
Go back as far as you you want and across eras Lafleur, Gretzky, Kane, McDavid, Panarin, Bedard are/were all seen as weak defenders but there energy was expended in equal at the other end of the ice.
I think it’s why Matthew’s scored so much last year. He pretty much quit playing his position defensively and hung around the high slot. He scored more but often left the Leaf defenders out manned down low.
Also indicative of Chicago (for all the shit Richardson takes here) using Donato or Foligno to play the “center” role defensively and letting Bedard stay up higher.
Matthew’s will never get close to 70 goals again because Berube’s system pushes him to a more traditional centers role in his own zone.
Sorry, post is way too long but claiming that getting the most from the skills players have is creating a country club atmosphere ignores that maximizing those skills puts players in a position to succeed. … Hence 3 cups!

No one is denying that the 3 SCs was a great feat. But let's not kid ourselves. Q is an average coach who lucked out and found himself as HC of an ultra talented team. And with that great talent he could afford to shelter an offensively gifted Kane rather than try to transform him into a two-way performer. It worked, so Q deserves credit for that but I reckon any competent coach could have done the same.
