I've seen the Hawks picked last in the division. Do you guys agree?
I have confidence that you folks are underestimating Luke as a coach. The finishing order within the division means little and I wouldn't be surprised to see Hawks compete for and come close to a playoff berth. (probably falling short in the end. Lack of talent will do that).

The Matthews contract is fair value.

The problem for the Leafs is that while they don't have any truly bad contracts, they also don't really have any GREAT contracts either. So they haven't really provided themselves with any surplus value to fit a very high, albeit fair, contract into their roster without taking a loss.

So yeah, seems like Nylander is heading out of town, unless he's fallen in love with the city or something.

Nothing instills more confidence than a 4 year deal!

yeesh.

That Leafs core is so pathetic. Tons of talent, but everyone has loser mentality.

The deal is only redeeming if they don’t sign Matthews to another contract after this one. If they’re paying him that AAV the tradeoff is that they don’t have to overpay him in his 30’s.

The deal is egregious now as is. But it’ll be even worse if they re-sign him to an 8 year deal 4 years from now at an even higher AAV.

Good luck figuring out Marner and Nylander going forward. What a bunch of chumps that FO is, wow.

Matthews signs four years at 13.25 per. No way Nylander stays for less than ten, right?
Correct. Nylander, imo, will be playing elsewhere after 23-24.
Thirteen and a quarter and you get most of the next four summers off? Pretty solid arrangement for him.
I wish I can have that arrangement. He can catch all the Blue Jays games he wants.

So MacKinnon signs an 8 year contract with a cap hit of 12.6 mil. MacKinnon is a playoff beast and has won a Cup. He goes 100k over over McDavid.

Matthews signs a 4 year extension with a cap hit of 13.25. Matthews is a playoff flop and has won a playoff round. He goes 625k over MacKinnon.

Something just doesn't add up here. I would take MacKinnon and his contract 100 times out of 100 and I bet over the next 5 years MacKinnon wins another Cup(s) and Matthews wins another playoff round(s).

I've never seen another Me First player like this before. Maybe Alexei Yashin.

If a guy getting paid what he is worth is selfish, then maybe the Salary Cap system is a bit broken. It does what the owners want, sure, but it is really putting players in spots they shouldn't be in. You shouldn't have to take a discount to win something.

What a laugh to hear that from a Blackhawks fan.

I just said it in another thread but its odd to hate on a player for signing a contract that the team offered. I get what people are saying w/regards to winning but at least the cap is on the rise. McD signed his deal during a stagnant cap, thats being overlooked quite a bit imo. Who knows the cap could be up 10 mil in a couple years. I’m assuming thats what they’re banking on.

Edit: Who knows maybe he wanted less but if I was his agent I’d strongly recommend against it, I’d even cite Bergeron as an example, guy took less and never won after that 1st cup.

We all knew from the time it was proposed that the salary cap system in any form was going to have flaws (and TBH there's not much that can be done that I can see). However, players have been taking discounts for years for various personal reasons. Money is not always their top priority.

Please elaborate
The inflated contracts of Kane and Toews, followed a few years later by that of Seabs had a snowball effect that was a big factor to where the Hawks have found themselves since 2017. Of course, Stan's incompetence accelerated the downfall but I said it would happen at the time and it did. Queue the defenders of the K/T contracts.

Maybe you missed the part where he said Matthews hasn't won jack shit, whereas please remind us of what Toews and Kane won when they signed those deals.

Another L for you.

Hawks as NHL doormats for the past 5 years and counting speaks for itself. Stan fell in love with his players and Hawks are paying the price.... as predicted. But you and others keep living in the past.

What are you talking about? No one is living in the past, if anyone in the entire NHL deserved to paid like they were, it was them. 3 Cups, 2 Conn Smythes, underpaid their entire careers up until that point. Go pound salt.
