Source: “Chicago most likely candidate for Karlsson Salary”

We are inching close to a deal that will send Erik Karlsson out of San Jose. The biggest issue continues to be a third team eating some of the enormous salary cap hit. A source tells me the Hawks are the most likely candidate to help teams out. The Hawks should really haul in something good to be in on this .(EKLUND)
Had me excited until I saw it was Eklund

Yes but the actual cash he's owed decreases the last two years.

Still a hell of a cap hit

The cap hit means nothing to us because he'll be going to Pittsburgh not Chicago. That's their issue. But I'm sure they would much rather see Karlsson come to them at say 6-8.5 cap hit much moreso than 11.5.

I would love to see us nab their 1st. Pittsburgh despite two generational talents are pretty damn long in the tooth. Hell, I hope Davidson asks for their 2025 1st more than their 2024 (I think they will regress heavily the following year not this year) but I won't complain either way.

Lmao he has to be doing this on purpose at this point.

Eklund aside, I would hope that in 3 years from now we're trying to be competitive enough so that having wasted cap for the 26/27 & 27/28 season would be a bad thing. The return would have to be nice enough to the point where i'm not sure how San Jose would be getting worthwhile value back and simultaneously how Pittsburgh would be able to send that much back the other way for a deal to work.

I think by the end of 2024 /2025 We should have many of the future Hawk players on the team.

That Tom Wilson deal is horrific. Like Brent Seabrook final contract bad.

Stupid contract but let’s try to quantify what Tom Wilson brings to the table in this way… Teams would kill to have him and the Caps were dumb not to cash in on that at the deadline next year.

For as long as Ovechkin is on that team, they're not selling

San Jose and Montreal actually got some decent roster players.

Granlund and Hoffman are still top 9 forwards. Rutta is still a 3rd pair guy.

Desmith is an NHL goalie. Petry has lot a step but his brain still works.

Pitt wins the trade because they got the best player but at least the players San Jose and Montreal got will help them win this season.

The tank standings just got a lot tighter.

I’m happy just because it’ll be fun to see EK, Crosby, and Malkin on a team together. I hope they make a little run. Would be cool for all of their legacies.

Some Sharks fans may be upset with the return but, like the Kane trade, when you’re accommodating a HOF player in his mid 30’s getting appropriate value back is difficult.

Trade makes sense for the Pens. They’re all in with those Malkin and Letang contracts. Who cares how bad everything looks in 5 years, they only care about the next 3.

Yeah it makes sense if they aren’t moving on from Sid and Malkin, ever. Which they probably aren’t. But regardless they aren’t winning anything.

I’m not concerned with the tank standings at this point. We’ve already won the jackpot, other teams are playing for scraps because there’s no Bedard for the next few years at least. We’re still going to pick top 10.

I won't be watching the tank standings as close as I did last season but I will still be paying attention.

The rebuild is far from over. Still need another elite talent. Kind of like Rantanen to complement McKinnon. Or Kane to Toews.

I don't doubt we will pick top 5 again.

The year after that. Probably top 10.
