I don't think everyone would have signed Tavares to that deal. Especially when you lack a major hole on D, and have 3 other stars to sign to big contracts. And he did fail to build a solid team around them, because he used a hell of a lot of cap space on 4 players and shitty goalies. He didn't make a trade or a draft pick that would make him seem smart. So I just don't get what people are gushing about with him.

And now he's doubling down on PITs core. lol
That is hindsight. They would have signed Tavares to that deal at the time.

Not really. A lot of people questioned why Toronto would sign him when they have so many other holes to fill. Not hindsight at all.
Adding a guy of his talent at like 27 years old to lead your young core. Yeah that is a good move. It didn't work. They didn't win. But I don't think it was a bad deal.

Kadri was a bad move. Marchment was a bad move.

OK, but just signing him and still keeping everyone else was not a good idea, at all. No one said it was a bad deal on the surface, but when you combine everything else with it, it was pretty obvious it wasn't ever going to work. He made more bad or sideways deals than he made good deals.

Having four forwards take up $40 million in cap space doomed them from the beginning. It was bad roster construction and I think the league will learn from this example.

It doesn’t help that only Nylander of the 4 elevate their game in the playoffs.

I think had they kept Kadri and focused on goal/defense instead they would’ve won more playoff series

Babcock and Q are basically the Spider-Man meme as coaches and people.

Spider_Man_meme.jpg

Completely inflexible tactically and willing to sacrifice any crumb of human decency to win. I dont believe either of them actually believe they did anything wrong.

Neither are worthy of the privilege of one of 32 head coaching positions in the premier hockey league in the world.

Hey now, Q can actually win. Babcock never let anything horrific slide like Q did, but at the very least players seemed to like Q. Nobody likes playing for Babcock.

That shit he pulled with Marner as 19 yr old and his other antics in past with other players show he is nothing but a bully who has no problem turning a locker room/team against player especially a younger player

Personally I always felt he was overrated

His run with Ducks was result of his goalie carrying team with historic performance and he was handed a readymade championship roster in Detroit that it could be argued underperformed under him.

Uh, I know another coach that fits that description…

Some players liked Q. Others wanted trades out of town so they good get a fair shot (and ultimately win cups as top 4 dmen).

3 cups vs 1 cup and 2 gold medals. Both were basically set up to succeed thanks to the rosters provided.

If that’s a Trevor Daley reference, what? He was injured for one and a liability for the other. Pens won in spite of him, not because of him, Cup handoff order notwithstanding (basically Timonen’d).

And sure, Q had drawbacks as a coach when it came to player management, but there’s no such thing as a perfect coach and he never lost a locker room like Babcock.

Note: any praise I appear to have for Q is from a perspective of basically ignoring his reprehensible response to Beach. With that now common knowledge, nobody should be interested in hiring him. But, if that hadn’t happened, we wouldn’t be having a conversation over who is a better coach right now. Q morally disqualified himself, but Babcock’s a dinosaur in the current NHL.

I forgot about Daley but I’m sure it’s more of a reference to Rutta and Kempny

I forgot about Daley but I’m sure it’s more of a reference to Rutta and Kempny

Rutta averaged nearly 20 minutes his only full season with Q

It was after Q was fired that his role and usage decreased, and he was traded from Chicago as new coach clearly was not fan of him as he wasn't fan of Forsling or Joker

Bowman moved several defenders that didn't fit what Colliton wanted and the Hawks paid dearly for that foolish hire

Daley was slotted in #5 role and as Hawks had 4 better defenders then him. His usage in Chicago was fine

Kempny is only real player you can say Q misjudged and Q didn't like him because of his tendency to get caught pinching and put his partner/Hawks in bad spot

As for his time in Washington he was better but still had issues with pinching at worst moments and during Caps cup run he and Orpik were essentially rotating 4/5 dman and played far lower TOI then top 3 defenders so its not like he was great defender integral to success of Caps.

Also, Kempny never was more than #4 and in his final season of healthy play he was at times dropped to 3rd pairing in that year, so he was far from amazing

Right or wrong, still defending Q, years later. I'll give you this, you're consistent.

Some odd coaching voices this off season. Babs then this? Like they are both trying to tank harder.

Saw Chelios is not to be back with ESPN. There are a dozen more names or so that will also get the chopping block per reporter. Hoping the whole studio crew and Hextall.
