They wouldnt have needed to.
Byram is the 4th or 5th best dman on the Avalanche right now, with a healthy roster. As he matures, he’ll move up the depth chart.
Depending on when the Hawks brought him to the big club, he might have been the best dman on the team. Thats not an ideal scenario for development.

There’s no intensity. The tone is like a regular season game. This is one of the best Cup Finals we’ve seen post lockout and we get Ferraro and a guy who sounds like Ben Stein in Ferris Beuller’s Day Off

Tge Lightning wre on their heels tgecwhoke game...if not for great saves by Vasilevsky the score coukd have been 8 or 9 to 3 with a regulation win forctge Avs...
Speed and relentless forechecking plus Makar is on anotger level ...doinayesctgevgamecwhen he activates and takes pucks in deep ....no other dman in the league is close to what amazing things he does in attacking with the puck..
And instead Hawks fans get to watch Lafferty and Khaira and no check Kane and huff and puff doesxafterx29 seconds on shift Toews...and Thecrestvofvourcslow forwardsxabd D left in the dust...andvof course Mr. -37 for 8 morecyesrs @$9.6m

Hawks cannot get outvof their own zone...Avs constantly atckong or pressuring in their p-zone ..
As I said..if not for Vasile sky abd so much sacrificing by TB in blocking shots the Avs would have scored 8 or 9 goals in regulation...the Avs speed and relentless forecheck gave TB fits.
It iscgoibgvto take years and years for the Hawks to be able to compete with the "play fast" level Davidson wants...Obviously he wants the Hawks to play like the Avs...but first you need players who can really skate fast ...shed their checks and be relentless on attack...the Hawkscsi far from that level it is sad and sometimes comical in theater's futility to keep up with their opposition.

avs are a perfect example of what a good rebuild looks like, hit on their 1st round picks, found a couple depth players in later rounds, but their pro acquisitions have been on point...a lot of great pieces added through trades not involving major picks/prospects and some key ufa signings

And the top pairing Dman they got only cost them 2-2nd round picks, not a top prospect, and 2 first round picks.

yup, sakic has done a really good job building depth around his core pieces from the draft by not paying too much in trades or free agency...technically you can throw girard and byram in there because he got both for duchene

I didn't appreciate him before. He brought the intensity of each game to viewers at home. For me, these playoffs don't feel the same without him.
