You're not a fan of Frank Ovechkin? What about Steve Lundqvist? Igor Smith? Tiny Walser?

NGL. The name failures are at such an epic level, I'd be disappointed if they tried to change it. Give me Evegeny Gretzky at 204th overall or Ville Smith at 97th.
Reminds me of the FIFA games. You can send youth scouts all over the world and the prospects you find will have names mostly believable for the country they come from. But, for some reason, FIFA has thought Tremblay is a common US last name for a decade. I always find a superstar from American with the last name of Tremblay.

Would LOVE an overhaul of franchise mode. Past like 5 years its slow and feels like a beta. More in depth “news” section. Better PBP. Better cut scenes. More interactive trade deadline. More interactive draft. Id like if you could check on your prospects throughput the season. Get like reports on their development. Have negotiations in contracts. Be able to play some of your prospects games. I didnt like when Emrick did PBP but EA should do a deal with NHL Network or TSN and get some the talent on the game for PBP, nightly game reviews, etc……

Better gameplay. Better passing. Idk how many times in the last 2 games I been on a 2 on 1 only to pass it behind me. Better AI teammates. Better goalies.

I know Im asking EA alot.

How dare you besmirch the name of Frank Ovechkin! He was the first Korean-born captain to win the Stanley Cup when he lead his Scottsdale Coyotes to victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Video proof below...

Riley Reid. Such an underrated teammate. Not the biggest or the fastest, but a really talented stick handler. Took a ton of shots as well.

It hasn't been announced yet and it's nearly August.
Those days are over I think. They did all their "deep dive" videos in like September or even October a week or two before the game came out IIRC.

I think NHL 24 won't be released until October 13th or something like that

There are so many intricate parts of the game that aren't emphasized bc EA pays such little attention to detail.

I just don't think EA has the talent. The CEOs making $20M/year that have stripped the company down to nothing for the sake of their salaries and shareholder profits, instead of reinvesting back into the company, like poaching FAANG developers to actually produce an amazing game that could be sold for $100/year...

Nah. Easier to just go cheap and recycle the same thing.

I'd happily pay $120 for a game that's great that this point, because the last $60 PoS version I bought was back in 2015.

Yeah, they most definitely don't have the staff or desire to make any serious improvements, unfortunately. In a perfect world, I'd like to see the changes I listed made but I don't think we'll see improvements like that for another decade lol. It's a good thing I'm growing out of video games tbh, I don't really care as much about the franchise anymore.

You know what's desperately needed? Player tendencies. 2K is brilliant for introducing this and it makes players' playstyles extremely authentic. There should be tendencies for things such as the likelihood of attacking the neutral zone, the likelihood to set up passes rather than taking shots (as well as key areas where players like to set up, such as Ovi's office for the one-timer). The likelihood to try and dangle around defenders rather than dumping the puck, tendencies towards going to the slot as opposed to skating around the boards.

For example, maybe a player will be more likely to attack the middle if they notice they're up against a bottom 6 dman who is worse at poke checking and positioning than a top 2 dman. Players should be able to size up their opponents and change their strategies based on what they can and can't get away with.

There need to be way more statistics as well (backhand shots, lateral pivots, anticipation, vision, lower body strength, etc). If you implement all these factors, player chemistry can be built around players' skill sets rather than the same old ineffective plays the AI tries to force. For example, when Ovi and Backstrom play together, there's a focus on working the puck in the offensive zone until Ovi is free for a one-timer. A lot of players have skill sets and strategies meant to complement one another. But this never happens bc ai players skate backwards and receive passes on their backhands bc there's no offensive strategy or positioning.

Players need to have individual stats geared towards individual intelligence and the ability to predict plays.

McDavid in real-life games can find key scoring areas because he knows how things will play out 2-3 steps ahead. Because of that, he will position himself in certain areas, pivot to buy enough time for other players to get open, and pass the puck back and forth with the point man until he finds a good feed for a one-timer or a rebound goal in front of the net. Crosby grinds in the lower areas and is extremely tenacious and able to bounce off checks and draw defenders towards him so he can set up other teammates. Meanwhile, AI players just run around like chickens with their heads cut off. There's no patience, no actual coaching strategies towards neutral zone breakouts, and offensive zone cycling tendencies. Players just rush toward the center and don't care if they get bulldozed by a dman for the 7th time that game.

There are so many intricate parts of the game that aren't emphasized bc EA pays such little attention to detail.
I've always wanted (and it's more possible now than ever with advancements in AI) a way that the game learns the way you like to play. For instance, have it where you play all 5 positions on the ice for 5 games each and the game creates a profile based on the way you play.

This is more for play off-puck. Like you said, AI players never open themselves for opportunities or skate to nowheresland. And even simple things like gap control- in EASHL I can read the play and gap-up appropriately. Having the ability to tune your AI players to your preference would make it so much better when defending an oncoming rush and such, as often you will try to navigate a broken player switching system, and once you get the Dman you want to control he is likely too flatfooted or mispositioned.

Finally add create a goalie helmet. Make create a franchise better too. Maybe be able to create more than 1 new franchise.
Would be amazing. Also, lots of mask designs for every team so that the goalie gets customish gear after a couple of games with his new team where he wears old or one colour pads and maybe the old mask first.

Would be interesting if EA moved the NHL series to another EA dev team like Tiburon, who produces Madden. EA Canada is nice and all but they're the worst dev team when it comes to re-working the codebase, rather just tack on a feature or two and keep the Ultimate team cash rolling in.

Madden has had substantial gameplay engine changes the last 5-6 years. What has NHL done?

The NHL is pretty much a gimmick merry go round with roster updates.

It’s funny that NHL has finally much moved to frostbite engine when FIFA and Madden have had it for since 2016..

This series will always be a good 5-6 years behind Madden and FIFA in practically everything
