This is a great post that hits on a very important aspect of the NHL game today. I am thankful to Hitchcock for putting it in black and white. I am not remotely surprised when I read that the coach cannot pull magic tricks out of the hat and turn a sows ear into a silk purse. In my opinion, it dovetails with Gorton looking at the team and knowing that the team complexion and fabric needs a hard (not to the extreme of scorched earth, obviously) reset. It is why I am so curious and yes, excited, about what bold move(s) Gorton has planned to make the team more self-sufficent when it comes to leadership. It has to come from the guys on the ice. A coach can do many things both good and bad, but I never ever thought a coach should be at all times responsible for qualities and strengths lacking in the team personnel.
Yes it definitely fits with what Gorton has been talking about, regarding getting guys with character. Every time he talks about what types of guys he wants, he mentions character. And look at who he acquired--Hajek wore an A for two years with Saskatoon. Howden was a captain for two years and wore an A before that. Andersson wears a C at the WJC despite not being the "star." Lindgren captained the National Team in the USDP, then wore an A his second year at Minnesota and an A in the WJC. There are other guys since he's taken over that he drafted who wore letters. He's aiming for good players but also leaders. He's trying to build a culture.

just because NYR have opening, doesn't mean its time for Quinn to leave his dream job, and bushel of high-end recruits.
if i comes , i will be surprised.

dont know if it will be Keefe,
wasn't much thrilled by Scott Gordon mention

if its Sandelin, i believe he's earned it, and if he fleshes out his staff with someone with notable experience behind an NHL bench (not even as HC) i think he'll do fine

Just because he grew up a Ranger fan?

I'm sure he wants to get paid just as much if not more than being a Ranger. Just because Shattenkirk took a discount doesn't mean that everyone else who grew up rooting for the NYR is going to do the same.

I literally have connections with someone who knows the van Riemsdyk family well. JVR really wants to come to the Rangers and he's willing to take less to sign here (ala Shattenkirk).

I'd take JVR, we could use a good winger, but I really wouldn't give him more than a 4 year contract. I'd prefer a 3 but he would be crazy to take that.

I'll believe it when I see it.

I doubt they went all in on moving guys just to turn around and drop a bunch of cash on a good, not great player.

This is a very, very dumb scenario, but they could look to trade someone like Zucc/Kreider and replace him with JVR + trade assets. It’s the same stupid shit from the Lucic signing and Hall trade, and I really hope Gorton is smarter than that.

Except Lucic isnt that good and was clearly bound to decline, while JVR is pretty damn good and isn’t showing signs of decline (although that risk is always omnipresent with UFAs).

Also, in this hypothetical scenario, JVR is taking a discount.

If we trade Zucc and sign JVR as his replacement (provided he does indeed take a discount), I’d be okay with it. Not stoked, but OK.

Frankly, though, I just don’t see Gorton going that route, so IMO it’s a moot point.

Based off of what? His "sketchy" history?

If he has been vetted and cleared by the Leafs, he's good to go. Their media would have dug up and made a **** show out of any potential ****ery if it existed.

I think its more like, why would he get the job? If there is 100 candidates out there at different levels, why should Sheldon Keefe get the nod?

I don't know either way, but I can see that there the guy he has teamed up with is very good at marketing himself and that there have been a lot of fluff and puff written by Keefe. OTOH, have had great records with great teams. Like I said, I don't know either way.

Those teams have gotten better under his watch.

He ticks every single box. Does that mean that he’s a slam dunk hire? No, I don’t think that guy exists for any team but I think it would be unfair to say that he’s been great only because he’s had strong rosters, He has been a huge part of that.

His history is absolutely sketchy, no quotes necessary. But, yeah presumably he's been thoroughly cleared by the Leafs.

Which boxes does he ticks?

How do you know that Keefe has been a big part of his team’s success?

His sketchy history for starters. I don't care about Toronto. If I'm NYR I'm not giving him his first head coaching job. Too many other options to take that kind of risk.

Basically every level Keefe has coached at his yrams put up historically great numbers.

They win....a lot. And they personalize their coaching to every player which this team sorely needs

Aren't these questions you ask about any candidate? Why any of the assistant NHL coaches? Why any of the college coaches? Why should they get the nod?

I kind of doubt that Keefe has a PR team but you never know. Seems more likely to me that since he is an interesting story, people have been wanting to write about him.

Someone stated that Keefe was a long shot and someone else asked about if it was due to his history. My answer was just — why shouldn’t he be a long shot? There are of course a ton of very very successful coaches out there, and many that has set records in the process.

Being a coach in the Toronto market we hear a lot more about Keefe than we hear about others. I am not sure if Gorton listens to the same channels as we do though.

I also doubt that Keefe has a PR team, but his pal is excellent marketing himself and also Keefe in the process.

What risk? Again if there was anything really bad out there to be unearthed you can bet your ass that the Toronto media would have gotten to it already.

The success of his teams before him and then after hes taken over?
