Just asked Oilers fans about their thoughts on Mcllelnan. Ouch. Seems again like Stevens /Willie archetype.

Extremly stubborn/heavily reliant on vets /no in game adjustments.

This is going to be bad.

sounds just like Sutter!

Well, we're likely headed to a Tod McLellan era. He isn't the worst choice, but I was hoping for something a little better. Let's see what he can do with the kids to get us back into playoff contention...

To be fair to Todd, he did a good job with the Sharks. It's not his fault that the team gave up and let the Kings do a reverse sweep. Also, the Sharks teams were pretty good prior to the reverse sweep in 2014, and dominated the Kings in the playoffs. Before the reverse sweep, you have to admit that the Sharks were pretty lethal in the first three games. They were completely dominating the Kings, playing at a fast pace, and scoring like madmen.

Out of all the options out there, Todd is probably the best. Coach Q was never an option. I could not see him coming to help a rebuilding team. He would rather go to Florida, which is going to go all in for Panarin and Bob in the offseason.

Or the Kings take a chance on a no-name coach, which is risky. At worst, Todd does a decent job with the team for the next 2-3 years, and the Kings get a new coach after the 3rd year once we have a talented roster ready to compete. As optimistic as a try to be, I have come to the conclusion this is going to be a long rebuild if we don't win the lottery this year.

Can you think of a coach in the league whose fanbase hasn't made those complaints about? I swear every coach is either guilty of those things or a few years away from it.

Yeah the ones that are up and coming that the Kings never seem to target.

That's not a realistic number. Unless by 'compete' the goal is making the playoffs. NOt sure 2 years will even do that. Rushing the process, taking shortcuts, won't help. Continue on the path that was started over the last 2 drafts.
That's from Futa himself.Making the playoffs in two seasons. So I'm assuming he means by the 21/22season.

The fact that Blake doesn't look beyond his circle of friends or acquaintances worries me greatly.

Lombardi called up a friend when his job was on the line in 2012. A guy he lost with previously. The whole Jack Ferreira thing. DL was with the Flyers before the Kings, and wow, hired a former Flyer coach as head coach. Brought a former Flyer player/management guy Hextall with him. Basically nothing but friends. He even brought Blake back after trading him.

It's almost like there are connections and networks in the industry that get people jobs and all that. Even DL himself had been fired because he couldn't build a winner. Then the Kings bring in a "new" guy to build a winner, despite proven failure before, and he came like this close to not building a winner again.

Stan Bowman. Hey, he's the son of Scotty Bowman. Weird.

Don Sweeney? A former Bruin is the Bruin GM? Sea Bass is there too?

David Poile? The guy never wins a Cup, never gets fired. He's the literal definition of it's ok to just give it your best shot.

They should hire some wunderkind like Toronto. Then just get Auston Matthews and you're golden.

If you win, you're fine. If you lose, you're trash. If you lose before, it doesn't mean you will lose again. If you've won before, it doesn't mean you'll win again. You can be old and be good. You can be young and just be young. Sometimes the children of the wealthy suck, sometimes they can be decent people. Most of the NHL is just a giant circle of hockey buddies doing hockey stuff. You get your foot in the door, and you almost can't find a way to leave.

This along with ziggys post gives me hope. But don't confuse hope with optimism. It can go either way. Bottom line, changes are coming which was what we all wanted.

Didn't read any of the previous posts and not saying he would have had a chance to become our coach but looks like Quennville out of the running for us.

How many up and coming coaches have won the cup in the last 10-12 years? Bylsma? Hated by fanbase couple years later. Sullivan? Plenty of Pens fans were upset with him this season. Laviolette? Yeah that was back in 06.

I mean why can’t we get good young coaches like Dallas Eakins, Jeff Blashill and Dave Hakstol.

Weren't all three of those young guys fired? Eakins was coaching a beer league team after his short stint in EDM, before landing in the Ducks org years later. He'll probably be their next coach.

Mcllelnan will be a fine guy and I don't blame what happened in EDM on him, more on the front office running a clown show and coaching from the pressbox.

I gotta say, just because someone sucked at Edmonton doesn't mean they're redeemable. You can be trash and still be a part of the problem. People writing off Tmac as a victim are surely mistakened

I'm not going to judge TMac for Edmonton, because it's been a trash org for years, regardless of the coaches/GMs brought in.

His coaching resume seems respectable as a whole, and frankly, I still need to feel more confident in other aspects of the organization before I worry about the long term impact of coaching.

What I hate about the idea of Toddy Mac is that I would expect more of the same when it comes to pushing the aging core out there and carrying management’s water just like Willie D.

I don’t buy it for a second that WD was in charge of roster decisions or even ice time. I think Blake & co. are stuck with the bad big money situations they’ve either created or extended. So they plan to try and just squeak into the playoffs every year, while paying lip service to what the fans want to hear about getting younger.

An outside voice won’t have loyalty and in theory, should be less likely to defer to the vets from past cup teams. Basically, Toddy Mac signals more of the same. Hearing stuff like Blake knows him from having played for him sounds like some amateur time, mom n pop bull ****.
