If we buy out Semin, then we may as well go ahead and cut bait on the Staals and Skinner because clearly the goal is not to be a competitive hockey club at that point.

Also, we have a vastly more positive view of Semin than a lot of the rest of the league. One personnel guy: "what about compete level, what about second effort. In four viewings this year, effort was a definite issue."

It certainly was an issue at many points this season, but at other points, it really hasn't been. He's been inconsistent, but he's been better than a certain captain of this team. And for that matter, I don't really blame him. At many points, he, Sekera, and Skinner were the only three on the ice who seemed to care. It's really hard to maintain that level of emotion and effort when everyone around you isn't.

Let's also not forget that if FeeddaPuck is correct, Semin's been battling a wrist issue all season and may go under the knife in the offseason.

At least trading Skinner would presumably return something of value.

Buying out Semin (and I cannot possibly believe this rumor has any merit whatsoever) would be the most mind blowingly insane thing this franchise has ever done, and it has done some pretty wild stuff over the decades.

Yikes, I didn't realize just how bad Eric Staal has been on the powerplay this year. His even strength numbers fall in line mostly with his career averages, but the powerplay has cost him about 10 points. More concerning though is that this is becoming a trend. A 5 year decline in shooting percentage to below 3%. 4 year decline in points/60. Less ice time, less chances created, less success as a unit.

They better hope that Loktionov is the real deal or Staal turns it around, because a powerplay without a center isn't going to convert much.

Yeah, I noticed that and commented in the other thread. Historically, he was getting about 1/3rd of his goals on the PP and was getting about 12-14 PP goals / year. The last 3 have shown a marked decline with 7, 3 (in 48 games) and 1. Now most of that time was with Muller as coach where the PP has sucked overall, but still, the only forwards with less PP goals than Staal this year are Tlusty, Dwyer, Dvorak, Malhotra and Bowman. Other than Tlusty, those guys haven't even played on the PP.

Don't remember hearing that. It could certainly explain a few things, including the problems and hesitation with his shot.

Buying out Semin would be insane.

Impressively ran to ground, THH. One question I've got though is your summary list - how do you figure Stiller became our property as a direct result of the trade? We first acquired him through free agency and then acquired him via trade with Florida for Ryan Carter and our 2011 5th rounder. I'm not quite sure how he became our property via the trade in the sense that we acquired him via any of the pieces in the trade or their trade progeny.

I'm guessing either Carter or the 5th rounder came from Lindros...

I remember one time when I posted something on the Hurricanes Facebook page and someone wanted to know if I was the same Justin Williams as the one who played on the team.
