Someone on the By the Numbers board confirms what we suspected:

- The Canes are the 3rd-worst team in the league during 1st periods
- The Canes are the 2nd-best team in the league during 2nd periods
- The Canes are the 6th-worst team in the league during 3rd periods.

The numbers go -14, +13, -9.

There must be some magic voodoo **** that goes on during the first halftime. If only they'd do it again during second halftime.:shakehead

The deal will pay Carrick $550,000 at the NHL level or $65,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level in the first year, $625,000 in the NHL or $65,000 in the AHL in the second year, and $700,000 in the NHL or $65,000 in the AHL in the third year. He will also receive a signing bonus of $225,000.

"A two-way defensemen with a knack for physicality, Carrick has some of the tools in place to become a standout player in the juniors. He is an extremely raw talent that is budding with potential."

Cool. He's put up a good amount of points.

Looked pretty advanced in what I was able to see of him before the season. Everything is there... but we've said that about a lot of guys that have come through our system. Not a huge fan of guys at the Junior level that overpower with their shots in terms of translating that offensive potential to the next level. We'll have to see how his offense comes along.

Cousin of former Hurricanes embarrassment Bobby Hughes, for those keeping track at home. Not that it should be held against him.

Just by the description of him he sounds a lot like Austin Levi, or at least what they hoped Levi would be at that stage.

NHL.com has a good little piece up on Eric Staal and his bid for Team Canada.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- With the 2014 Sochi Olympics less than eight weeks away, players around the NHL are awaiting their fate.

There will be just a handful of locks for Canada, which will announce its roster Jan. 7. Many of the remaining players will hope for a favorable reading of their resume. Take Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal. He won a gold medal in Vancouver in 2010, and he produces at a 70-point pace every NHL season.

Yet ...

"For me, knowing the type of players we have in Canada, you don't take anything for granted," Staal said after practice Tuesday.

The list of options at center is deep for Canada. Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, Ryan Getzlaf, John Tavares and Patrice Bergeron all figure into the conversation. That's why Staal doesn't sound like he's offering false humility when he considers his chances.

"You've got to make sure you're playing good hockey and doing the right things on the ice, playing a structured two-way game, because that's what is successful," Staal said. "So no, you don't take anything for granted. You don't expect to be there. You have to perform, and that goes for anybody."

Then Staal laughs and makes one exception.

"Besides maybe Sid," he said.

...

I live in Mississauga so I've seen Carrick play a number of times. He's very steady and reads the play well. Makes things look easy. Has a good point shot and pretty good first pass but he doesn't jump up into the offense a whole lot. The steelheads are pretty darn awful this year and as one of their senior players he's getting a ton of time. He's been getting paired with Sean Day at times as well, who has the worst +/- in the league last time I checked.

Anyway, going to see them play the greyhounds in 2 weeks. Excited to see Tolchinsky.

There's a thread in the Polls forum measuring consensus about Team USA defensemen. And as much as I might want to play the small-market-underrated card, even if I squint I just can't see Faulk in that top-8 this February.

If Team USA management thinks Brooks Orpik is going to be worth half a **** on international ice they deserve to lose.

I was gonna say, I honestly would EASILY take him over Orpik for this. Likely take him over Buf and Shattenkirk as well if they're not looking for a specialist. Question is Faulk or Fowler in that case.

Or pull the Old El Paso "Why Not Both?"

Orpik's not even one of the ones ahead of him.

Here's how that poll looks right now (not to give it too much credibility, but for the sake of using a consensus order):

1. Suter
2. McDonagh
3. Yandle
4. Shattenkirk
5. Eric Johnson
6. Byfuglien
7. Carlson
8. Jack Johnson
---------------------------
9. Fowler
10. Faulk
11. Martin
12. Bogosian

While I could maybe pick this guy or that guy to compare negatively to Faulk in an HF argument, if I take off my Canes homer glasses and look at that field I have to admit he's going to need bring his A-game to make the cut.
