I think it's pretty clear, not just from that quote but from the preponderance of the evidence over the past several months, that JR is truly desperate to get us into the playoffs this year.

He's not making trade decisions with rebuilding in mind, he's just trying to get this team to catch fire and get into playoff position while the door is still open.

And because now he's minority owner, he knows that the only way the team has a chance of breaking even is making the playoffs.

Or maybe JR pulled back making a trade because Ruutu is no longer dead weight, and Bellemore and Komi injuries have made Gleason a necessity?

That's your main reason right here. Trade needs and possibilities change on a daily basis. Our needs and available players have changed.

I think there are moves coming at some point regardless. Jr will either try to add a quality player for our playoff run, or cut dead weight if we are bombing. I think one of tlusty, ruutu, and Gleason will be gone at some point this season. Just not today probably.

I think they won't want to pay tlusty so he's the most likely to go. There's always a reason for jr to keep Gleason, and he likes ruutu a lot.

I think he liked the look of our defense without Gleason if he was paying attention. We have like $9 million in cap tied up in Pitkanen and Gleason that could potentially come off the books and still ice that same defense that looked so strong if not improve upon it. Gleason gets to jump in and prove he's healthy and showcase for a potential suitor. Seems a bit like the Liles situation with Toronto. Helps him personally, helps the team. Not saying he's a slam dunk to be traded, because he's not, but it's fortuitous timing for sure.

Are there any teams so desperate to take a Peters+Tlusty or Peters+Gleason package that would have something to give back (borderline top 6 forward or 3C)?

Hmm maybe this belongs in the trade talk thread, sorry.

I was under the impression/understanding that JR had *always* been a minority owner and was part of the original ownership group that bought the Whalers in '96. Heck even Karmanos' bio on the Canes website suggests as such:

With his partners Thomas Thewes and Jim Rutherford, Karmanos acquired the NHL franchise on June 28, 1994—the afternoon of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.

And http://www.courant.com/sports/hockey/hartford-whalers/hc-whalers-historical-timeline,0,5898691.story

June 1,1994 -- Whalers are officially purchased by Karmanos, Thewes and Jim Rutherford (KTR) for $47.4 million, but only $22 million in cash. Rutherford is named president and GM. Holmgren is named coach. Whalers draft Jeff O'Neill as they host the 1994 NHL Entry Draft at the Civic Center.

While Skinner, E. Staal and Ruutu have certainly been productive, I haven't been blown away with them as a unit. I've never said to myself, let's not break them up when Semin comes back (not that #12 and #28 have been good together this season). In my mind, the ideal situation is one in which TEA finds itself, J. Staal mans the shutdown line, Skinner and Ruutu feast on weaker competition on the 3rd and the vets continue to give the Canes a legitimate 4th line.

Tlusty - E. Staal - Semin
Gerbe - J. Staal - Lindholm (Dwyer in high leverage situations)
Skinner - Nash - Ruutu
Dwyer/Dvorak - Malhotra - Dvorak/Dwyer
Bowman, Westgarth

Not sure about the rest, but those guys are likely to play close to 20 mins. Fill in the rest as needed.

So, is Khudobin going to be back anytime soon? I keep reading "only a week away" only to be waiting and waiting.

I think he's probably ready or close now but waiting on a deal for him or room for him.

Offtopic but anyone remember who Jeff Skinner's comparable was on TSN's draft coverage show back in 2010?

Spoiler: Zach Parise.

Seems pretty bad in retrospect, not sure who I would compare him to though.

I don't remember who it was, but someone said Skinner reminded them of Joe Sakic during that time. I also seem to remember comparisons to Dubinsky.

I want to say I remember Skinner being compared to Mike Richards. Also remember his skating style being compared to Crosby.

I don't think he'd be on the trip if they weren't hopeful he'd play. Last week Muller said early this week, which IIRC is the last update on him (hard to tell with minimal media availability lately). Problem is, there's no room for him to come of IR any time soon.

Someone on the By the Numbers board confirms what we suspected:

- The Canes are the 3rd-worst team in the league during 1st periods
- The Canes are the 2nd-best team in the league during 2nd periods
- The Canes are the 6th-worst team in the league during 3rd periods.

The numbers go -14, +13, -9.
