He's hanging them up. If not, he's first signing during the season when injuries hit.
Lou: "Zach, someday, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to perform some service for me. But in the meantime, take some time off and enjoy Christmas with your family, because a man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man."

Just horrible

I see the Yzerplan has gone into full on desperation mode.
- 7 years without making the playoffs.
- 10 years without a playoff round win.
- 5 years with zero playoff revenue in a new arena.
- 1 elite (Mo) or franchise player under Yzerplan.
- Once a team to play for…maybe one day…

All hail the rebuild.

- 7 years without making the playoffs.

With no bone in this issue, Yzerman first took over in April of 2019 and his Day 1 was seen as ground zero, despite the previous two years without playoff action.

Still, even giving him a 3-year cushion, it's been 5 playoff-less years with him at the helm. It's really adding up.

No matter how patient an owner can be, these are ridiculous stats to tolerate in what is ultimately a money-making venture. Sheesh.

Again, it's five years in and his highest pick was 4th overall. Considerable! Obviously. But Detroit hasn't been stepping to the plate with a given gamechanger still on the board in any of the drafts.

Seider is huge though. And he was a ballsy pick at 6th overall. I've been tweeting about him since he was 14, so I've been fortunate enough to see his every (pertinent) step on his way to the NHL as one of the few Germans who comes up looking like a real NHL player at an early stage. That said, even I didn't think he'd be such a truck AND put up over 40 points in each of his first two seasons. Really one of the most fun young players in the league to watch with lots of snarl and a winners' mentality.

Also, check out his WC contributions the past three springs. Really quite notable for a kid who first turned 22 this past April.

But I think we have to mention Raymond here too. He's a sub-million per player who is just 21. Putting up 57 (82 gms) and then 45 points (74 gms) in your first two years, with a ton of middle six veterans eating up your ice time in Year 2, isn't something we're seeing from most players his age. He should definitely be doing for them what Jesper Bratt does for Jersey in no time flat.

Aside from that, it's been drafting via bulk. Feels like they've made 45+ selections in Yzerman's time as GM. Edvinsson should be the next Seider, likely already this upcoming season.

There's still time for the "studs" like Sandin-Pellikka from the most recent draft or middle-six center Kasper from the prior draft.

I think they're on the verge of getting into the show - and then staying in for a good long while.

Alone the Dmen with NHL possibilities in the cupboard is astounding.

We've got the likes of Bolduc and Salo. They've got 12+ of those guys. It gives you options once you're in playoff mode.

The concept of rip it down and rebuild is a great theory, but how many of them have been wildly successful in the last 5-10 years?

Is it desperation? Gave up a 4th Rd. pick and a fringe NHL d man for 2 years of Petry @ 2.35 AAV.
He has signed vet d-men to help this team compete and protect youngsters.

Edvinssson and Kasper were both named top 10 NHL prospects.
They drafted Nate Danielson and SandinPellika with TWO top 15 picks.
And made 3 more picks in the top 50.
He traded for a 25-year-old top 6 winger and signed him for less term.
Locked up their 1c
Signed key free agent C in JT Compher.
Made shrewd deals for Sprong, Kostin, and now Petry.
2 seasons ago made a very underrated pick up in Walman.

He has been one of the most active GM's not because he is desperate but because he has cap space and serious draft capital to work from.

IDK. I'm not familiar with DET's pipeline, but looking at the NHL roster they've got Chiarot, Gotisbehere, Petry, Holl and Maatta included in their D, and guys like Debrincat, Compher, Copp, Perron, Kostin, Sprong and Fischer up front. Maybe Yzerman has a plan for a year or three down the line, but right now he's got some good, decent and meh talent holding places for whatever kids are on the way. So I'm not sure he's the model GM we thought he might've been. At the least, it's further confirmation that rebuilds aren't fast. And we'll see what happens in DET, but they don't always work out.

Such is life that the lotto balls don’t go your way year over year. The roster he’s assembled and assembling isn’t one that looks promising (a) to make the playoffs again, (b) anywhere near fruiting into a year over year competitive team to make the playoffs.

Add a ‘+1’ and you are getting Buffalo ugly (I know they are the shiny new toy now…).

He has cap space like typical terrible teams, yet he’s filled it up with a bunch of fodder. He resigned Mr.Michigan and trade for a player had limited options in the market and forced himself to his hometown bc the team had the cap space to pay him, where no one else was going to. And traded for another aged out Michigan guy.

He’s active, he stole Ned from CAR, no doubt, only to cover that by using more assets to trade for a UFA goalie.

Oof. You know when the only defense to rebuilds failing a lot of the time is a meme there is a lot more truth to that belief that you want to let on.
I could do it without the meme but then there’s a good chance 90% of the kiddies here don’t get the reference.

If he was so desperate to make the playoffs why would he trade Hronek and get back futures?

He has filled it with fodder? WTF? DeBrincat is not fodder, Compher is not fodder, and neither is Ghost at 1 year or Petry for less than 2.5 aav?

He received Kostin for practically nothing, signed Fisher for ONE year, and made a very smart low cost signing in Sprong. He got one of the better free agents in a lacklustre market with Compher - made a helluva deal for DeBrincat. And still has almost 6 m cap space with a 22 man roster. They could be primed for a huge free agent splash or trade next off-season or by the TDL.

The pure fact that you are even suggesting Ned is > Husso shows how little you know about other players in this league.

Detroit is a bubble team for sure but they won’t be for long - too many exciting pieces in the pipeline.

In essence, he added a lot of bodies before last season and has basically done the same this season. Even with a few kids inching towards the NHL roster or bigger roles.

What was clear last season is that he added those bodies to
A) Be a bit better and stay in the PO race a good bit longer
B) Insulate the youngsters and take some of the load off
C) Let a guy like Larkin know that they're serious about looking to take the next step
D) Not be below the cap floor
E) Have trade fodder come the trade deadline in a strong draft year

Looks like all those points were met.

Didn't mean bodies in seats at exorbitant prices come the postseason.

The course of action doesn't look all too different this summer although I'm a real fan of Compher and Kostin really impressed in Edmonton last winter. Sprong is coming off a surprisingly strong season and DeBrincat can naturally change some things in the top 6 with his 25+ goals.

They're all being added after Copp and Perron were solid adds last summer.

I always liked Berggren while following his progress in Sweden, so it's nice seeing him force his way into the line-up.

Dunno if it all pans out. But on paper right now, I'm thinking moves have been made that make a lot of sense for a team that really owes it to its fanbase to be back in the postseason.

Might want to go back into the Time Machine on that Ned reference- Yzerman was hailed a stroke of genius and made a snide remark about the trade at the time towards CAR, only for it to be a bust where he had to cover it by trading for a UFA to be in Husso…

Can’t wait for another non-playoff season for Detroit.

Larkin is Mr. Michigan- highly unlikely he was leaving the Wings.

John Tavares ‘didn’t do anything wrong,’ doesn’t deserve Islanders fans’ scorn: Garth Snow

Confirms what I was told at the time: Garth wanted to trade JT, ownership said no.
But.....JT certainly led on ownership that he wanted to stay, and the article states they had money put aside to sign him yet, there were no negotiations. None by who though?

Part of me, despite not thinking much of his lack of outward professionalism while here (last presser), would like to see Snow get a GM shot...if just to see how he would do.

Oh definitely but ownership can't say they weren't warned. They were careless and got worked bigtime.

All it took was one person saying "I love it here but I miss my family back home. I am starting my own family soon and want my family to grow up where I grew up. For the franchise that took me in when I was 18 please do what is best for this franchise. I will only be inconvenienced for a few short months."
