I see the Yzerplan has gone into full on desperation mode.
- 7 years without making the playoffs.
With no bone in this issue, Yzerman first took over in April of 2019 and his Day 1 was seen as ground zero, despite the previous two years without playoff action.
Still, even giving him a 3-year cushion, it's been 5 playoff-less years with him at the helm. It's really adding up.
- 10 years without a playoff round win.
- 5 years with zero playoff revenue in a new arena.
No matter how patient an owner can be, these are ridiculous stats to tolerate in what is ultimately a money-making venture. Sheesh.
- 1 elite (Mo) or franchise player under Yzerplan.
Again, it's five years in and his highest pick was 4th overall. Considerable! Obviously. But Detroit hasn't been stepping to the plate with a given gamechanger still on the board in any of the drafts.
Seider is huge though. And he was a ballsy pick at 6th overall. I've been tweeting about him since he was 14, so I've been fortunate enough to see his every (pertinent) step on his way to the NHL as one of the few Germans who comes up looking like a real NHL player at an early stage. That said, even I didn't think he'd be such a truck AND put up over 40 points in each of his first two seasons. Really one of the most fun young players in the league to watch with lots of snarl and a winners' mentality.
Also, check out his WC contributions the past three springs. Really quite notable for a kid who first turned 22 this past April.
But I think we have to mention Raymond here too. He's a sub-million per player who is just 21. Putting up 57 (82 gms) and then 45 points (74 gms) in your first two years, with a ton of middle six veterans eating up your ice time in Year 2, isn't something we're seeing from most players his age. He should definitely be doing for them what Jesper Bratt does for Jersey in no time flat.
Aside from that, it's been drafting via bulk. Feels like they've made 45+ selections in Yzerman's time as GM. Edvinsson should be the next Seider, likely already this upcoming season.
There's still time for the "studs" like Sandin-Pellikka from the most recent draft or middle-six center Kasper from the prior draft.
I think they're on the verge of getting into the show - and then staying in for a good long while.
Alone the Dmen with NHL possibilities in the cupboard is astounding.
We've got the likes of Bolduc and Salo. They've got 12+ of those guys. It gives you options once you're in playoff mode.
