That's been the plan all along.

And Lou's had it on his mind since he left the Leafs.

For sure, but look at what MN is doing with Fleury and Gustavsson - it's something that's possible to remedy. Their D is also not there. But adding a top tier center to their winger group (and making Johnson a 2nd line center), would mean that they would very quickly have a young forward group whose talent rivals the Devils. I mean, imagine a top-6 of


Gaudreau - Bedard - Marchenko/Roslovic
Johnson - Jenner - Laine

With Werenski back, and a rapidly developing Jiricek, their D is likely to improve as well.

I'm not sure they're playoff bound, but they've got a LOT of skill (I'm leaving plenty off). And it would also be true if they got Fantilli instead, but he's big step down from Bedard.

Idk whether Bedard will have the instant impact of Crosby/McDavid, but it seems fairly likely to me. Kid skates like Barzal, and shoots like Sakic.

That Flyers game was one I didn't expect to go our way. The rest of the games is just icing on the cake(at this point if teams like Buffalo, Detroit, Ottawa or Washington can catch us we don't deserve to make the playoffs)
 
Feels like yesterday many were writing off the Isles from the playoffs because BUF and OTT and even DET were in striking distance with a thousand games in hand... now all three of those teams are pretty much finished. Meanwhile FLA looked sure to miss the playoffs at that time and now have stormed back into the picture. Got a wild couple weeks ahead.

Yes! Amazing to think that a team can learn a new system (even if they ultimately settle on a modified version of the prior system), grow and change during the course of a season.

And by having a little patience during a (marathon) season, it allows time to integrate young, recently acquired players (Romanov), callups who earn promotions (Fasching, Holmstrom, etc.) and trades (Horvat and Engvall).

I am not for or against Lou, I just want the best for the Isles and don't care how it happens, but he has done a solid job adding some pieces in the off season and making his big move prior to the deadline.

All things being equal, I probably would have preferred trading the package used for Horvat to add Meier instead, just given that he is younger and a little more dynamic, but it is a small issue and better to add Horvat, leadership and more center depth, as opposed to a pure rental or less impactful player.

Now the Isles need to keep playing well and not forget what they have learned going into next season. Because the East looks like it is only going to get tougher every year.

Although hopefully Bedard goes out West. I don't have any animosity towards Columbus or the Blue Jackets in general, but I am not a fan of Jarmo and I don't believe he shouldn't be rewarded for his utter failure to construct a coherent team. After the debacle of this season, and especially if they don't land Bedard, I feel like they should be looking for a new GM to lead them forward.
