Dekeyser was ufa next year and is a very good player for them. This buys out 5 years of ufa. He would've gotten this and more on the market. Kronwall is on his last legs and they needed to tie this guy up while hunting for others to put with him. It's a fair deal.

So, I thought this guy was solid and had heard good things about him (despite my original snark). But I still can't help but think this is a pretty significant overpayment. I get the idea that you tie up a young guy for a long time, but I would have thought something closer to Rask money should have done it. Then again, defenders are getting more and more valuable all the time.

Justin Faulk is going to cost us a billion dollars.

Calling my shot now. Justin Faulk will be traded before the Canes sign him to his next contract. He'll get gobs of money, but it won't be from the Canes.

My thinking exactly. This is one of the ways that the then successful Canes get young assets and draft picks to continue the "draft and develop" mentality.

Agreed. Faulk has 4 seasons left at $4.83M. I think we trade him as soon as next year, or the year thereafter. It would hurt, but I think we could get massive value from him. I could see us trading Faulk for Dylan Larkin straight up, something like that.

Or, if the right deal never materializes, I have no qualms with paying Faulk $7M to be our #1D for 4-5 years after this contract is over. But I have a suspicion that by that point we'll have Slavin or Hanifin or Fleury as a #1 heir apparent. Really we should be dealing whoever gives us the most value.

I don't think it will be as soon as next year. He's still too good with too good of a contract and the other guys won't have enough experience under their belt.

If he doesn't sign an extension by August of his last year in contract, he'll be moved before training camp. Hopefully for for someone really freaking good.

If the utes come on like we all hope, I can see Faulk getting moved at the trade deadline before his last season on this contract. I can't imagine his value ever being any higher. If the Canes are in a playoff position then (don't laugh, it could happen), Francis does seem like the type that still may cash in at the high point. If not then, over that summer.

DeK's contract isn't a bad one at all. He's a solid #2 guy and right now that's cheaper then most of that type of player goes for, especially on the open market when he was an impending UFA.

But that said, Detroit's ****ed. They can go 10% above the cap in the summer but even with being able to put Franzen on LTIR here, they're still boned.

It's tough that our guys are too young to be left without him yet, because I don't think his value will ever be more than it is right now. While his cap hit is what it is, his actual pay keeps going up and teams that will overpay will want him on that deal as long as they can get which to me means the longer the canes wait (if the decision indeed is to move him) the less value I think he'll have. I also don't assume his play will continue to improve significantly. If it is perceived that he's peaked or that injuries may get in his way it may also drop the value a bit. Everyone thinks he's the bees knees right now.

Still, we get him at the best value anyone ever will so there's nothing wrong with just enjoying that. I'm just saying if the decision down the road is to move him then now is the best time.

I suspect Hall absolutely was or would've been offered for Faulk had he been available. It makes no sense for us right now obviously. Can't leave this d to the kids yet.

I'll take my bet that Faulk will be a Hurricane for quite some time. I don't see why the Canes would even consider trading him while he's on this sweet heart contract. The only situation I could see is if we are an awful team the year his contract is expiring, but the way I see it we will not be in that position at all.

Everyone is saying Faulk's value is at an all time high. And well yeah! It is!!! That just means it's good for the Canes, the Hurricane's need to use his value to their advantage on the ice, and not in the trade market! He's an important piece to our success, why would we let some other team benefit on him right now? Your most valuable piece should be used to your on ice advantage while competing, and not used to acquire futures.

On the other side though. I fully suspect us to trade one of Hanifin, Slavin, or Fleury in 2-3 seasons. That left side is going to be absolutely stacked, and if we keep all 3, one of them is going to be severely under slotted as a 3rd pairing d-men. (Unless Fleury just doesn't prove much) Also add in Carrick & Bean to the equation.

I kind of see this a bit differently. A cap team is going to care more about the cap hit than they are the actual dollars. I don't think it will be that much of a problem, and with the actual dollars being $6M the last two years (2 summers down the road), maybe GMRF does start to consider a move.

Dekeyser's contract is an inarguable overpayment for an average second pairing dman. He's decent defensively, but the guy does not move the needle forward when he's on the ice. No driving the offense, terrible possession player.

Being as how there are many many people arguing about it here and otherwise, I would suggest that your assertion that it is inarguable is inarguably inaccurate.

Regarding Faulk, if the young'uns don't slump off and continue to grow this year, I could see GMRF possibly looking at trading Faulk next summer for a Top 6 scoring winger. Let's face it, we still need that 1 extra bump in our offense to get us to that next level. With Faulk's value as high as it is and teams needing a top pairing defensemen, we could get that needed forward.

I think we should hold on to our best right side dman. I think we have a lot of really good left handed d, but I don't see McKeown or Bean being as good as Faulk on the right and management seems to much prefer Slavin on the left. So I think as a matter of having really solid 1st pairing dmen on the left and right I think we should keep Faulk as a 1st pairing Righty. I do really like Mckeown and Bean I just don't see them as 1st pairing dmen or at least I think Faulk is better.

My sense is all of this depends on whether or not it becomes more broadly obvious what the Canes are building here. If the team continues to take steps forward and has some success, then there will be less pressure to move Faulk and even more pressure to solidify a core, of which Faulk would obviously be a component. That said, he could be a huge chip in the big game. My guess is there's a better chance that this would happen either during the 2017-18 season or more likely at the draft. This would obviously mean that the team was comfortable with another as our #1 RHD.

If the team is successful, my guess is that there's going to be more emphasis on results than "money puck".

Should the team try to keep a chunk of this core together that will start with the 2019-20 season with Skinner's new contract followed by Faulk's the next season. That is why the Rask deal was so critical in both term and dollars. GMRF's work has just begun and he's going to have some serious heavy lifting beginning next season with Teravainen, PDG, Nestrasil, and Altshuller all needing new contracts. Then in 2018 his young defensemen are all up for renewal. The team has 13 players signed for next season, but only 4 the season after that. Good times, people, good times.

What happens with Faulk depends on Hanifin, IMO. If he becomes a guy who can anchor your top pair and play in all situations, then trading Faulk is a no-brainer. The return for him would be too great to pass up.

Yeah, this. Dekeyser does nothing for me at all. His percentile ranks in pretty much everything are firmly below average.

I think those low possession no needle moving guys (assuming they are good at what they do) are fine if your dman usage is highly situational.

It seems they are paying him to be a Kronwall replacement (he won't be), rather than paying him for what he's been or shown thus far.

Square peg, round hole, etc.

He's essentially been their best defenseman for much of the last couple of seasons. Babcock loved him. He's being underrated here. He's been used as a two at times it seems, but he's probably best as a three that can handle two duties on occasion. It ties him up through his prime, and he would be highly sought after on the market. He's the only good d they have in his prime. I don't understand how this deal doesn't line up with value across the league.
