Maybe lazy wasn’t the right phrase, maybe I’m more annoyed with the fact it seemed like JD was their only choice based on his ties with the organization and his prior experience. I would’ve been more ok with this search if reports of multiple candidates were interviewed and then they chose JD over them. Maybe it’s my overly pessimistic Ranger fan clouding my judgment and having OCD over Sather run as GM.

@RangerBoy Did an outstanding job outlining this a few weeks back. Gorton was Sathers hand-picked successor. Gorton knows the vision. An outsider may try to come in and start replacing people and that isn't what the Rangers want. Gorton. Drury. Quinn. Gorton has done a phenomenal job. It is his show. They need a Team President who is okay with that. Davidson at this stage in his career isn't looking to be a control freak. He is looking to go home, to the Rangers and help Gorton finish the mission to win a cup.

He's a great president. He will have his hands involved in everything within the organization and will help everyone. You'll also probably see him a lot during your broadcasts as a guest which will obviously be great for you guys. You shouldn't fear him being over bearing on Gorton or trying to take over, he's very much involved, but he lets his people do the job they're hired to do. I know Gorton isn't a JD guy, but JD and Gorton are probably on the same page when it comes to team building. You look at our stretch from 13-19, when he's been here, we've been very much about draft and development which is a perfect fit seeing as how much draft capital you guys have over the next few years. Also, he knows exactly what Panarin wants, and Panarin has said many times at how he loved how he was treated by the Columbus organization, headed by JD of course, so I would put you guys at the top of his potential destinations.

You got a good one here. Good luck.

Just another example of how dumb ESPN is stating JD is the GM. Maybe if you spent more than 2 minutes on hockey during SC instead of showing that loser league where 2 teams might have a chance to win, you would know that.

I hear ya. I just don't want any interference with what Gorton has been doing. If he's there to support Gorton's vision, then great. He's a very well connected guy and he knows a lot about the game, players, and league.

I think the extent to which this current phase is "Gorton's vision" is overstated. He's the one making the roster personnel moves, but the vision for the organization is set out by the President and GM working together, along with the VPs, scouting and advisory team. In other words, our team has still been heavily influenced by Sather. And going forward, the team will be heavily influenced by JD. It's not going to be exactly the same, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I see JD coming in and looking to gel with what's going on while steering the organization with his brand of thinking on hockey.

As for those saying he accomplished nothing in Columbus, I'm sorry... but clearly you don't remember the absolutely toxic and disgusting state that organization was in when he got there. That they're a respectable organization now is an enormous accomplishment.

Wait, the Rangers hired the guy who was a co host (along with Kathie Lee Crosby and Fran Tarkenton) of that show from the 1970s, That's Incredible, to be their new team President?

Oh, not that John Davidson? Ah; my bad.

(sorry; I couldn't help myself with that one!)

Seriously though, it's great that JD is back with the Ranger organization. He did a good job in both St. Louis and Columbus. As long as he leaves Jeff Gorton alone (which I think he will), things will work out well.

JD is the perfect Pres for the rangers at this moment. Hes a Ranger at heart, he now has experience overseeing two teams where he left them better off than when he came.

He did the color commentary and was one of the absolute best in the business, which means for all you youngins he knows the game and has an analytical mind. He has no ulterior motives and is a down to earth man not driven by ego.

The team is already on the right track, im sure he sees that and will put the final puzzle pieces together to get the absolute most out of the org from the top down.

Welcome home JD cant wait to hear some ooo babys.

I like JD. I'm good with this move, but I don't think it's a home run or whatever. He did a solid job overseeing a rebuild in STL and a good job turning CBJ into basically a perennial fringe playoff team, when they were previously an afterthought.

I like what the current administration is doing. They seem to have a plan. I hope JD assimilates and doesn't try to exert too much influence and change our course.

We'll see. I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

It’s actually weird to think he’s been gone 13 years.

Having said that, JD has shown himself to be a guy who lets his GMs do their thing, and works to give them the resources and tools they need to build a TEAM.

Assuming that holds true, I’d love to see what he does with Gorton and company.

Yeah honestly this feels better than if it was something like going directly from the booth into the front office. That said, considering he was hired directly from the broadcasting booth to a management job I think speaks to how those around the league see him and respect him. As far as I can tell, he's well liked and respected for his work.

And let's be clear, this isn't him coming in to be the GM. Gorton is still the guy in charge when it comes to going after players and making decisions, JD will help him with that and help guide the decisions and act as a buffer between Gorton and Dolan

I can understand being underwhelmed about the idea but I can't quite fathom being outright upset. Again this is team president, not GM, and while his previous teams have "done nothing" he helped set them up with some pretty good talent and direction.

Peaches and Herb's biggest hit was titled "Reunited"
I actually forgot about that song.

I always thought "Close Your Eyes" was their biggest....(and it seemed "Shake...." got a lot more air time than either of them).

Of course not, he has no experience as a GM or in coaching, he only played in the 70s. Never worked in any capacity with scouts. He has accomplished nothing in CBJ and STL. What have they won? Literary nothing, except one round in the POs. At most he has been a good spokes person for a finish rookie GM...

There are so many good knowledgeable hockey minds out there and capable persons. It would have been worse if we brought in some crazy Mike Keenan/Neil Smith type forcing Gorts to go all in. But lol, nobody is thinking that way anymore with the cap etc. We have been afraid for a ghost that doesn’t even exist. Really, who besides like Larry Brooks would push Gorts to go all in? Was it really an option that Dolan would have signed like that boxing promoter Don King? JD is a huge upgrade over him...
Try to relax a little, you should just want him to not disrupt all the progress Gorton has been making. I think that should be his main task. If we got a guy that you were hoping for, he might have rocked the boat taking this franchise in all different directions which could be utterly disastrous. I think JD taking the job came with the caveat of him having to let Gorton follow through and finish what he has started. JD should focus on Hartford though.

I look forward to every good move being credited to Gorton, and bad ones to JD. Especially any move for a player over 23. Goddamn JD trying to accelerate the rebuild!

Honestly, again if a lot of this job is working between Dolan and Gorton, bringing in a guy who is familiar with the organization might actually be one of the best moves to make. Imagine bringing in a guy who immediately clashes with Dolan, setting up a power struggle dynamic and potentially making Dolan think he needs to take more direct control of the franchise. Who wants that?

Well said. JD isn't here to ruffle any feathers. I'm sure that Slats and Gorton interviewed him and assessed his perception of what his role is going to be and what he expects out of taking this job.
