maybe he's saying that JD should have called out the team mistakes at the time? I think it's usually hard for an employee to do that
Sam: "How about that chance from Dvorak?"
J.D.: "I actually think that play was symptomatic of the deeper seeded reasons the Rangers are struggling to keep up in the standings."

Seems plausible.

Let’s not overlook the impact that social media has had on sports analysis. In the last 10 years or so, analysts have ventured into expressing views that are at least somewhat more critical of the team they are hired to cover.

They are never going to match the pointedness of a message board, but it’s certainly a different generation in the studio than it was 13 years ago.

Case in point, Valiquette.

In a couple of days @Ola will reveal that his JD posts were sarcastic. The early ones in this thread were dripping with it.

Not against it but I don't know if this means a whole lot to me. I mean he's replacing Glen Sather and once Sather stepped down from the GM position--he did exactly what? Served as a conduit between Dolan and Gorton and/or Drury and and/or Clark? Gave his perspective when asked for advice? Shuffled some papers around on his desk between intervals of staring out the window? Showed up with the others for the draft--mainly staying in the background because he's not a scout but smoked a few cigars (that's almost for sure). Was around when someone wanted to go out for a fancy lunch and didn't want to eat alone? It's a great job mind you and someone's got to do it but it ain't the GM job but at a certain level of things those things are just going to happen anyway

All that said if he can get Panarin on board that's a big win for us. I think this improves our chances of that.

Can anyone tell me what a hockey president actually does? Like what are their roles? Making sure payroll is running smoothly? Deciding if there is budget for a new position? Interfacing with Dolan to ok expendures? I really have no clue what the actual roles are.

Also, who replaced Ola with a Flat Earther?

I think it varies from team to team, but I feel like it’s a cushier version of a GM. They generally they help steer the team in broader strokes than the GMs, they help mediate things between GMs and owners, they can be reps for league meetings, and they make the hires when GMs get fired, some might do more, some might do less, but I feel like it’s not all that important unless your whole organization is a tire fire

Hehe, 31 must get some material to work with!

Seriously though, it’s not 100% sarcasm. When everyone look at something from the same perspective, it can be good to look at it from another. I love JD, who doesn’t. He could have played the president in the West Wing instead of Sheen senior, but...

That's a good question and really I don't know. If the personnel choices comes down to the General Manager though I would say that is the more important position. Davidson will be in a higher executive office and there are NHL meetings that go on above the purview of General Managers--for instance rule changes. There is also a CBA coming up in the next couple years or so and that will probably also be something that Davidson will take part in as the spokesperson for the Rangers organization.

JD DID call out mistakes... particularly on-ice malfeasances... until about the time the rug got pulled out from under Bob Gutkowski. Immediately thereafter the NYR broadcasts lost all their snap and became what they are today, just a mouthpiece for the company rather than anything resembling sports journalism. JD became part of the problem, and I always loathed his outsized respect for anyone with money and power... calling them Mr. This and Mr. That in what felt like a fawning manner. But in retrospect, as Levitate kind of points out, there was not much he could have done to swim against the tide once it had turned. I'm glad he's back. Should be a fine fit as president... great experience with clubs needing to refashion themselves and the best possible Dolan buffer. For me, the worst thing about it is that it probably ensures many more years of Sam in the booth despite being about ten years past his "sell by" date. We could use some fresh faces and voices on the telecast to match those on ice.

I think this is part of getting a guy like JD. He won't feel the need to "prove himself" or "make his mark", is my optimistic hope. I imagine he comes in with the understanding that in a few years they'll hand over the reins to Gorton. I think the parent club already has a direction and they're happy with it. JD will handle the other aspects primarily and set a constructive and positive tone.

Nice to see "reins" spelled properly for a change. Kudos!!!

Amazing. Welcome back JD! This off season continues to get better.
I personally have been wanting this since he was in the Blues organization. Pretty sure he wanted this position prior to going to Columbus. Anyway, longtime coming. Best part of all this is getting to hear his voice and hopefully a "yeah baby" once in a while.
Maybe he will finally be a piece in getting us another cup, the one he "almost got us" in 1979. Welcome back JD!
