Welcome back JD.

Looking back...the Rangers were such a different animal in 2006 when JD departed.

Straka Nylander Jagr was the clubs 1st line, and they were flat out Awesome!
Petr Prucha scored 30 goals for the Rangers! PRRRUUUUUUUUU!
Jamie Lundmark was still on the team
Marc Staal was still in Sudbury
The Beacon Theatre became part of MSG
The Garden of Dreams Foundation was started
Henrik Lundqvist made his NHL debut
The Garden still had the Blue Seats
Cosby's was still outside the Garden

You could go to a game without going bankrupt buying tickets.

I explained it in another response to a user how Sather seemed behind on a lot of ways in how modern NHL ways before Gorton took over.

Why would you assume that JD is the same way?

CBJ's FO is pretty "Modern" with the way that they do things. That should relieve you of your concern.

JD was in the TV booth during all our worst seasons. Did he ever question anything? Total tool, he just didn’t understand the modern game, and like why should he?? Tortorella has been ‘his’ coach in CBJ — smart move! STL and CBJ have been very mediocre organization, but CBJ have had one thing. A really good scouting organization, especially in europe, I wonder who built that one?..

Slats have been a dead man walking on the job forever. Gorts. Has managed to wrestle control of the NHL team, doing a good job taking it into the rebuild and the first phases of it. Our farm system is among the worst in the league. Our pro scouting and manage positions has been full of guys like Schoney, Barnett and the likes snoozing on the job. Gorton brought in two totally inexperienced company men, great, but do they know what they are doing? First day at work still for these guys.

One cup in 80 years, we are content with meritocracy, no wonder...
I honestly don’t know where to start, but I don’t agree with literately all of this. You sound like you’re being mad for the sake of being mad

The thing about this is JD would've been one of the best candidates for this position even without considering his ties to the Rangers - just looking at his time as President of Hockey Ops in St. Louis and CBJ.

I look for him to pick up where Sather left off in dealing with Dolan. Part of the reason Dolan has screwed up the Knicks so much is his direct involvement. We get a hockey lifer to be Rangers' President and Dolan will trust whatever they say. This was the best attribute of Slats with the Rangers and JD is perfect in that respect as well.

I also think he's going to turn Hartford around and make great organizational changes to help that happen.

Figuring out the best way to gain advantages by any means necessary and finally having the dollars to flex in those areas. I don't just mean free agents and trades - I'm talking analytics, scouting, sports science and all the rest.

Don't be fooled, this isn't some bogus hire just because of his familial relationship to the Rangers. That's just a perk.

Of course not, he has no experience as a GM or in coaching, he only played in the 70s. Never worked in any capacity with scouts. He has accomplished nothing in CBJ and STL. What have they won? Literary nothing, except one round in the POs. At most he has been a good spokes person for a finish rookie GM...

There are so many good knowledgeable hockey minds out there and capable persons. It would have been worse if we brought in some crazy Mike Keenan/Neil Smith type forcing Gorts to go all in. But lol, nobody is thinking that way anymore with the cap etc. We have been afraid for a ghost that doesn’t even exist. Really, who besides like Larry Brooks would push Gorts to go all in? Was it really an option that Dolan would have signed like that boxing promoter Don King? JD is a huge upgrade over him...

Maybe I just don’t have the connection with him because I’m younger, but this is fine for me

As long as he doesn’t rock the boat and let Gorton do his thing, they coulda put a monkey in the position

That is quite literally what you said. If that is not what you meant, completely fair. I say things all the time and realized it was perceived differently. But Rangers have not been making "typical, lazy" moves. That is not their MO any more. If it was, Messier probably be GM and we would have hired a NHL retread as head coach. If anything they have been doing quite the opposite. There is a complete changing of the guard happening, from the big club down to the Wolf Pack.

Maybe lazy wasn’t the right phrase, maybe I’m more annoyed with the fact it seemed like JD was their only choice based on his ties with the organization and his prior experience. I would’ve been more ok with this search if reports of multiple candidates were interviewed and then they chose JD over them. Maybe it’s my overly pessimistic Ranger fan clouding my judgment and having OCD over Sather run as GM.

Cool, I like JD.

Just don't mess with anything we've been doing.

there is zero chance they would have hired him if he wasn't on board with the current plan. slats is on board with the plan and knows that if its successful his legacy will be tied to it. and you know JD got hired based on his recommendation.

Who cares if he has GM or coaching experience, he has over a decade of experience in the ROLE HE WAS HIRED FOR.

Seriously, his job is to be in meetings about the direction of the team, maybe make some hires, and go to league meetings. It’s a big position, but it’s more of a broad strokes position than a specifics position.

I don’t really feel strongly one way or the other on JD’s hiring, but he’s left both the Blues and Blue Jackets in better positions as organizations than when he went into them

It’s actually weird to think he’s been gone 13 years.

Having said that, JD has shown himself to be a guy who lets his GMs do their thing, and works to give them the resources and tools they need to build a TEAM.

Assuming that holds true, I’d love to see what he does with Gorton and company.

Well said. He just better not **** up what Gorton's been doing.

You hear that JD? Stay out of Gorton's way. You're a white mage. You're there for support.

The positive for Gorton is that JD doesn’t have any aspirations of being GM. I also think, at 66 years old, he isn’t driven by the desire to remake the Rangers in his image and set himself up for a huge payday to elevate his career.

I hear ya. I just don't want any interference with what Gorton has been doing. If he's there to support Gorton's vision, then great. He's a very well connected guy and he knows a lot about the game, players, and league.
