I’m as critical of AV as anyone but if you watched that game and your biggest takeaway was “I wouldn’t have picked Vesey for the SO” - I’m not sure what to say.

They got hammered and deserved that loss, and that’s saying something in a season full of hammering.

I think getting hammered has something to do with AV...

You said it. Vigneault's short-shift system and obsession with dumping in will always keep the Rangers possession and shot numbers low.

Changes come from the bench. If AV orders shifts of 1:00 or less and Shattenkirk has the puck at 0:45, he's not going to try a rush past center. To me, it's hockey's version of the pitch count -- AV's conditioned players (mentally and/or physically) to look for a change with or without the puck.

Can you imagine Brian Leetch on a shift leash? He would have never made it to the Hall of Fame.
I think this is absolutely correct.

Just speaking on tonights game it seemed like the devils were being super aggressive at their own blue line and neutral zone so dumping the puck deep would have been best option. Get in deep work on their defense which isn't great.

Put on a super aggressive forecheck and seal off the walls in the neutral zone and you're going to have a good night against this team.

Vesey already has a shootout winner this season. He was 2-for-4 in his career entering tonight.

And I got lucky with a VS-model once but that doesn't mean that I get to bed models at will! I have to put the work in so that I am prepared mentally and physically when the opportunity arises. Jimmy Vesey is not a player you go to when the game can be won with 1 single shot! He doesn't have the skills required.

Would you say he doesn't have the mental preparation as well?

Buch, Hayes, or Nash ready to go.

AV puts Vesey up.

Get rid of this ****ing clown behind the bench. He is ****ing CLUELESS.

The only shootout win we have this year Vesey took the shot that won it. So.......?

Really it was a horrific game by the team who were totally outclassed throughout. Almost if not as bad as our shootout loss to Dallas in which Pavelec stood on his head and basically stole a point--which is what Henrik did tonight. The team was shit---that's the real story here not that Vesey was picked to take one of the shots. Again his was the goal in our only shootout win this year. It is not as f***ed as you and some others are making it out to be.

Both of Vesey's SO goals were winners. Only guy on the Rangers with more over the last two seasons are Zucc and Zibanejad -- both shot before Vesey.

Vesey statistically is better than every other Ranger in the SO since he joined the team.

This X 1,000. I missed the first period, but from what I saw of the game, the Devils looked like they were playing a 4 point game against a hated division rival and the Rangers looked like they were playing Arizona.

So sample size dont matter right?

I knew as soon as Vesey missed that pen shot he was doomed on here lol.
He did score a huge goal tonight crashing the net which few Rangers seem to do and also a huge goal last time we played the devils.

I really thought our defense was going to be much better than last year. I thought having the Smith that we had last year in the playoffs was a plus but he's been disappointing. I though Shatty would be adequate in the defensive zone but he has had plenty of games where I just SMH at some of his gaffs. This defense looks just as bad as last year which is stunning without Girardi. Is it AV's system or the personnel?

It is without a doubt AV's system.

I am not blaming Vesey. It is on the coach to pick the right guy. Vesey did his best.

10,000% system. Look at the Dallas Stars. They completely upturned their defensive play after hiring Hitchcock.

I’m away from my computer but I’m sure there are several examples of at-least-decent defensive teams that don’t have much talent.

People hate Vesey so much, they'd rather rationalize the goal as all the hard work was done by the also hated Paul Carey. THAT'S how much Vesey is hated.

Vesey is a whipping boy on this board for sure. He is a good 4th line player who has some skill.

What exactly is that skill? Dangle the puck into the defenders skate? Not being able to complete the simplest of passes? He doesn't even know how to take a slapshot let alone a wrister. All he is good for is shuffle the puck over the goal line in tight spaces which is good i guess.
