New to Baseball (Questions, etc)

Sorry for another question, but where does the "Rule 5" in the "Rule 5 Draft" comes from?

As in why is it called Rule 5?

It's 5th on MLB Rules list. The amateur draft in June is actually called Rule 4 Draft but no one really calls it that.

Was watching the ESPN 30 for 30 series on A-Rod and his potential trade to the Red Sox back when he was with Texas. Anybody know why the Rangers weren't going to eat part of A-Rod's salary, forcing the Red Sox to negotiate with A-Rod himself for a paycut, yet they then ate 67 million of the contract for the Yankees?

I find it strange they weren't going to eat the 28 million or whatever necessary for the Red Sox to get the deal done, but they ate 67 million for the Yankees.

i think once they showed how willing they were to move him that the relationship between hicks and arod was damaged and he didn't want to come back. they had to move him at that point and the pa had denied any restructuring of his contract so they just ate money.

The Yankees did give them peak Alfonso Soriano, 5.1 WAR in 2003. Plus A-Rod probably wanted out after hearing that they tried to move him so the Rangers took the best deal possible, asset wise.

Which 30 for 30 is that? 4 Days in October?

I'm not sure exactly, but it's up on Youtube. There's a lot of good insight in it from all parties. It's crazy how so much fell in place for the Yankees to get A-Rod, how upset Red Sox fans and management were, and yet the Sox won the year later anyway

True. I guess the Red Sox just gave up in the end then, even after it became clear Hicks and co. needed his salary off the books. Seemed to work out in the end anyway for all parties.

It might have had something to do with Boston sending back Ramirez (in the middle of his 8/160M deal) in a potential A-Rod deal as opposed to NY sending Soriano (still in arbitration I believe...he was only paid 13M in two years in Texas?? They weren't going to save nearly as much by swapping A-Rod for Ramirez as they did by swapping A-Rod and Soriano. I honestly don't know though.

Fun Fact - I also just noticed that Boston is paying Ramirez 1.94M/year starting in 2011 until 2027.

Why does the Gulf Coast League list two Tigers teams?

List on the Right hand side
Usually Detroit had a team in the Venezuelan Summer League. But they felt that the current economic situation and crime problems in Venezuela have become too bad, so the Tigers shut down their VSL team (they still have a Winter League team and their facilities in Venezuela, though). In order to develop their prospects who were designated for the VSL the Tigers created an additional Gulf Coast League team.

Figured it'd be something like this. The Yankees also have multiple GCL teams. The Pirates had a similar situation, but instead replaced their secondary Dominican team with an Appalachian League team. The dynamics of the low minors are slowly shifting.

I feel sorry for whoever does the scheduling for the Gulf Coast League for the 2016 season. Baseball is the one sport that does not do well with odd-number teams.

Not really much to sweat over. Since complex rookie teams like those in the GCL and AZL don't even sell tickets, let alone really advertise their games, scheduling is really a formality. Besides that, I believe you can still have split squad sort of games at that level, so I'm sure that helps alleviate odd-number teams.

Why is Binghamton going to the New York-Penn League for 2017 season? Who will replace the B-Mets for 2017?

I haven't heard that was going to happen now that the original planned sale of the B-Mets to Main Street Baseball fell through. That plan was for Main Street to buy thet B-Mets, relocate them to Wilmington, DE then sell the Advanced-A Blue Rocks to the Texas Rangers who would then move them to Kinston, NC at least temporarily. A New York-Penn League team would then have moved into NYSEG Stadium and taken over the Binghamton market. BUT since the sale to Main Street fell through and the team was sold to John Hughes instead, the plan, at least to my understanding, is to keep them in the Eastern League. They are, however, planning a rebranding after this season from what I've heard.

So more guys are hopefully on for 2 & 3.

Which happens about as frequently as the pitcher comes up in the 8 spot with RISP and 2 outs.

Always felt like the epitome of managers trying to overthink things to me. Odd thing is that I've generally thought very little of managers doing this and I think extremely highly of Maddon, who seems all-in on this strategy.
