New to Baseball (Questions, etc)

According to MLB themselves it's the 8th, and according to the Winter Meetings info it's the 7th. I'm assuming the GMs arrive on the 7th and the meetings start on the 8th, since it's a 4 day event and both sources have it ending the 11th. Either way that's really not that important.

Everyone arrives on the 7th. There's a dinner and stuff that night. I'll be frequenting the hotel bar at that time.

i will give you two american dollars if you can get an interview with jeff bridich but keep calling him dan o'dowd. and when he tries to correct you, you laugh at him and say "come on dan."

Figured I would post it here.

So this stealing signs thing...part of the game? not part of the game? Never really understood what the consensus in baseball was on this.

No one complains about it. Unless it's the Jays, in which ESPN complains on behalf of their beloved Yankees and makes up some crap about some ficticious man in white out in the CF seats.

Players and coaches hate it. A good way to get plunked if caught.

Though I never understood why most let Travis Hafner get away with it. Dude peaked back at the catchers signs multiple times every at bat.

If you're a runner on 2nd and can peak without making it obvious. Good on you. If you're anyone involved in the game and you can decipher the signs coming from the manager/coaches, they need to get better signs. Being deliberate by looking back as a batter is just plain dumb.

Meh. It's gamesmanship. If you can do it without technology and Patriots style spying then the more power to you. Opposing teams won't like it but there's nothing against doing it.

It's not cheating but like Clowe Me said it's a good way to get a pitch square in your back.

I think the consensus is it's part of the game to a certain limit. A guy standing on 2B peering into the catcher and trying to help his guy out at the plate is fair, though teams hate it. A coach/manager/player staring at the third base coach and trying to figure out the signal to the batter(ie is he bunting, hit and run, stealing etc.) is fair game also, though not easy. An ******* sitting in the bleachers in centerfield with binoculars peering into the catcher and helping the hitter out, crossing the line.

Are there actual factual incidents of this that are proven? Like I mean I assume it has happened bit o don't know of any documented cases that were proven... not the jays man in white BS.

I've heard of it long before the Jays incident, so I imagine it's happened at some point, otherwise I'm not sure where the story originated. I don't personally know of any documented cases though.

I remember the very game that evening when that man in white ******** came out.

Going to the Jays/Mariners series in Seattle in late July. Just looking for any tips or advice for when I go, if anyone here has been to Safeco. It'll be my first MLB games. I'm super excited.

Ask over on the jays discussion thread in the leafs section. There's a few people over there that have made the journey or can atleast guide you in the right direction.

Oakland didn't accuse the Jays of stealing signs. Think they just happened to play Tor the series after it happened.
